Evan Mahaffey enters transfer portal after two seasons at Ohio State

The Cincinnati-native will look to finish his collegiate career elsewhere after two years in the Scarlet and Gray.
After two years of playing in front of Ohio State fans for his home state school, rising senior forward Evan Mahaffey announced today that he plans on entering the transfer portal, ending his career in Columbus after two seasons. Mahaffey previously played for Penn State for one season before transferring to Ohio State ahead of the 2023-24 season.
Mahaffey appeared in all 32 games last season, averaging 3.6 points and 3.1 rebounds per game while playing 18 minutes per contest. He started three games this past season after starting 35 games his sophomore year. Mahaffey also tied for the team lead in blocks (28) and was third on the team in offensive rebounds (41).
He scored a season-high 15 points against Valparaiso on Dec. 17, 2024, making it his third double-digit scoring game through Ohio State’s first 11 games. However, he did not reach double-digits for the remainder of the season, averaging 2.6 points per game over the final 21 games of the season.
After Ohio State’s 82-65 win over Iowa on January 27, Ohio State head coach Jake Diebler said that Mahaffey “played big time” and “completely flipped the script” for Ohio State. The junior from Cincinnati scored four points on 2-of-4 shooting and also grabbed five offensive rebounds in a much-needed win for the Buckeyes.
The phrase “a jack of all trades but a master of none” describes Mahaffey well. The 6-foot-6 guard/forward has done most things for Ohio State at some point during his career. He’s guarded Zach Edey against Purdue. He’s brought the ball up for Ohio State when its guard depth was tested. He knocked down a buzzer-beating three against Indiana this season as the shot clock was dwindling.
However, Mahaffey’s role shrunk as the season wore on. His confidence to shoot the ball, even when put in great situations to do so, disappeared by March. His free throw shooting plummeted from 62% last season to 39% this season, making him a liability to leave on the floor late in close games — which is tough, considering half of Ohio State’s games were decided by 10 points or fewer. Mahaffey played fewer than 20 minutes in 11 of Ohio State’s final 14 games.
Mahaffey was the No. 187 recruit in the 2022 recruiting class, ultimately committing to Penn State over Xavier, Cincinnati, West Virginia, and Kansas State. He was the sixth-highest-rated player in Ohio State that year, and the No. 42 small forward in the country. After one season at Penn State, Mahaffey transferred to Ohio State when Micah Shrewsberry left Penn State for Notre Dame.
With Mahaffey’s announcement today, Ohio State now has two open roster spots for the 2025-2026 season. Starting next season, the NCAA is doing away with scholarship limits and enforcing a 15-player roster limit, regardless of scholarship limit.

The offseason started for Ohio State women’s basketball Sunday night after an 82-67 defeat to the Tennessee Volunteers. Less than 24 hours later and the Buckeyes have their first player join the transfer portal when sophomore center Faith Carson announced on Instagram their potential move out of Ohio State.
Carson joined the Scarlet and Gray out of Buchanan, Michigan, a town 17 miles north of South Bend, Indiana, on the Southwest corner of Michigan.
In seven games, Carson scored four points with eight rebounds. Carson’s first game accounted for two of those points and half of the rebounds when the then freshman played three minutes against IUPUI on Nov. 12, 2023.
The 6-foot-4 center did not win a spot in the usual rotation in her first season behind starting forward Rebeka Mikulášiková, with Taiyier Parks and Eboni Walker coming in for Mikulášiková. That meant Carson only played in games where Ohio State amassed big leads over their opponents.
Head coach Kevin McGuff put Carson, junior guard Kaia Henderson and freshmen forwards Seini Henry and Ella Hobbs into an inevitable redshirt season when McGuff ruled them out every game of the season. In NCAA women’s college basketball, players cannot play any minutes and still earn a redshirt season, unless there is an injury involved.
That redshirt year gives Carson three years of eligibility for the Michigan 2023 Division III Player of the Year, and No. 1 ranked Michigan recruit for four consecutive seasons. Carson also lettered in volleyball in her time in high school.
This season, Ohio State brought in forward Ajae Petty, had one more season of Walker’s services and 6-foot-6 freshman Elsa Lemmilä picked up the other minutes in the post for the Buckeyes.
