Zwick vs. Smith (official thread)

Voted for Smith.

I like his throwing motion better, and he settled down and found the right touch on the longer passes at the end of last season. As long as he is seeing the field and not locking on, watch out.
Zwick needs to improve his footwork over last year if he wants to have a chance of taking the #1 spot again.

(P.S. I vote Smith, just for the fact that he never acted like he was going to tranfer to another school while being on the bench the way Justin did. And hes just a better leader while bringing more levels to his game than Zwick).

Zwick never even hinted at a transfer, and if I recall correctly, he flat out denied those rumors.

Isnt what this and every sports board is all about "speculation"?? The Clarett saga - Speculation, the fact that we could go undefeated - Speculation, Beating Texas- Speculation, Us being one of the top 5 teams to produce pro players - Speculation, Clearing of investigations -Speculation. We all use assumptions and words from the media if I am correct. You can try to persecute me for what I read in the Columbus Dispatch, but its where alot of us have gotten info from about our sports knowledge (media). I just know that if you dont see it for your own to eyes - than its nothing but speculatioin till you do see it.

P.S. - Zwick in his first public comments since his injuries did say that "he admitted to thinking about transfering at somepoint." This was in the (Wed.) December 15th edition in which he does announce he will stay. In the (SAt.)Dec. 11th, Tress spoke out saying that he would understood if Zwick were to tranfer....Yes there was alot of media hype, but with both Zwick saying that it crossed his mind and our HEAD COACH speaking about it, I can see where the media was gettin their news from.

Big difference between speculation and rumor-mongering. Also, just who is "persecuting" you? According to you, Zwick was comptemplating going somewhere else after his injuries, which means he wasn't think of tranferring because of being bumped to number 2. Zwick made his comments in response to rumors, and not because he had previously declared he was thinking about transferring.

No, Zwick admitted that he was thinking of transfering because he was injured and was moved to the second spot and he would think to himself "whatelse could go wrong". It was a calaboration of everything going on during that time period. Just because he spoke out to the public during the time of rumors doesnt mean he didnt think about transfering - and that was shown when he admitted that he did contimplate leaving. So at some point it did cross his mind leaving OSU. When teh main person admitts to something - its not a rumor anymore, its truth. So no way was I "rumor-mongering".

A quick thought on the "rumor mongering" issue before addressing the question of the post. I heard Zwick consistently and steadfastly deny that he ever considered a transfer - if he "admitted" contemplating it, I missed that entirely. However, contemplation of a transfer, hypothetical or otherwise, was less of a problem to me than was Smith's describing his coaches as puppet masters who were playing with his life. It's not my intention to dump on the guy - that was simply a mistake born of passion, as I see it - but that was something that should never have been said in front of a group of eager reporters.

Getting back to the actual question, I think that as they stand today (or as last I saw them), Smith gives the team a better chance to win because he has a certain level of cockiness, good in a quarterback, that causes him to never become tentative when things aren't going well. Zwick is inherently low-key (and many great quarterbacks have had low-key personalities), but it seems to me that he has at times become tentative when things weren't going well, whether it was lack of run support, poor blocking, or whatever, and his performance suffered as a result. If he can overcome that, he can be very good, but great quarterbacks don't become tentative.

Smith, for two reasons:

1. He steps into every throw, which always results in a tight spiral that will knock your head off if you're not looking.
2. Zwick tends to let the ball slip out of his hand too much. He's got too many of the "where in the fuck is he throwing that one" passes.

I agree. But my reasoning is much more simple: Smith beat Michigan. For that reason, I think its his job to lose.

I'll be honest, I was very much on the Zwick bandwagon last season. Smith's emergence was very big for the team, but then again I think the team's emergence was very big for Smith. I still think that either QB can lead us to big things, but if I'm basing this on pure talent, I've got to turn my hat to Smith. As long as Troy plays within himself next season he has the potential to be all league. Where he gets into problems (as did Zwick), is when he tries to make things happen. I also give my nod to Smith based on what I have read from his teammates, he seems to be more of a leader for the team, you can't put a price on how valuable that is to the team. From a confidence standpoint it seems that Zwick can get down on himself pretty quickly, where Troy seems to have thicker skin.

I'll admit that after Smith was busted I was one that almost wanted him off the team. I guess I spoke before all evidence was brought forward, and I spoke with memories of the Clarett saga. Quite frankly Smith has redeemed himself in my book, and I am basing my choice on talent and leadership.

Zwick vs. Smith

 Just for old times sake...and to get Mili to have an aploplexy...Actually, in all seriousness, we should set up an open vbet for who will be the starter (barring injury) this year. Or not. I just want to talk about some football again.

GO BUCKS!

O-H...

I just want to talk about some football again.

Get used to it - OSU will always be a basketball school.

If I set up a vBet on the starting QB I would give Zwick 20-1 odds of starting after the Miami game (barring injury of course).

But it is time to start setting up some vBets for the coming season. Suggestions?

I vote yes. Anything to get some football talk going would be a good thing, IMO. I think a vBet on who will start the most games at corner opposite Youboty would be cool. Maybe I'll do a poll question.

Or a vBet on whether D'Andrea will be moved to DE? :p
