Zwick vs. Smith (official thread)

By all accounts...

...I would take this article with a grain of salt. I believe Smith has one the job, but the coaches (ie Daniels) wants to back off his statement from last week and try to keep UT on their heels. Make no mistake, Troy will be the qb.

I need to figure out the sarcasm font. Apparently, the toungue-in-cheek nature of my previous thread was too subtle.

Yeah... don't worry about it... especially when one of those people who said it didn't work was John Cooper... (About 2 years ago)

The idea of platooning makes me uncomfortable (except it gives the Longhorns plenty to think about). However, I would like to see both JZ and TS used. I seem to remember a discussion from last spring or maybe early fall that said they had developed a package of plays that had both JZ and TS on the field at the same time. Now, that I'd like to see!! Anyone else remember that discussion? Seems like it came from reliable sources, but I can't remember who.

VL said something to that effect

OSU coach Jim Tressel dabbled with a Smith and Zwick rotation in the first two games last year. Tressel settled on Zwick in week three, but then switched to Smith when Zwick struggled and was injured.

Maybe Hooley should watch some games before he writes this sort of shit. Zwick played the first three quarters of the Cincy game, and essenitally the entire Marshall game. There was no "dabbling" with a 2-QB rotation in the first two games...Zwick was clearly the starter and Smith was a situational sub at best.

As for the platoon system, name me one football team, college or pro, that ever won a national championship/Super Bowl with it.

It could be tough... but it could be VERY effective... opposing teams would have to prep for two distinctly different styles... and could be used to change pace if one style isn't working exceptionally well because the opponent is better equipped for that style...

plus it would keep both.. sharper and happier...

the line will be significantly more experienced this year so they could handle adjustments for both styles...

and could help with future recruits...

I still feel somewhat obligated to Zwick for being such a great recruiter with his phenominal class...

NJ, good point about Zwick's recruiting efforts for us. I think that he does realize, however, that he still needs to prove himself on the field to be the starter, and from what I've seen of the kid he's very mature and understands that fact completely.

the reality is, one of these two needs to step up big time and end the argument.

but having two guys can give you an incredible dimension if they are very different...not saying justin cant run or troy cant be a drop back passer, just they are very different type qbs.

in response to milis question how many "athlete" qbs have ever won national championships/super bowls?

Well, just off the top of my head, I think Colorado in 1990 and one of the Nebraska teams in the 90s had an athlete-type QB. I could look at the list of national champs over the last two decades and maybe find one or two more.

Tee Martin wasn't much more or less of an "Ath" qb than Troy... IMO (Sorry, didn't mean to bring up '98)

I'll toss in Charlie Ward from 1993 FSU.

Some Oklahoma QB's were triple-option guys that won NC's.

Tony Rice for the University of Orange-slushee-drinkers in 1988.

all three of those were option offenses-not something you really see today, and we sure in the hell arent going to be running it.

charlie ward was an african american, he gained 800some yards rushing in his career. id give him more props for his punting than that.

tee martin another african americanhad 306 yards rushing in 98, that number always sticks with me.

In my mind the "give the other team diffrent looks" arguement for the two qb system is just lip service to try and sell a bad system. It doesn't take into account that quarterbacks often take time to warm up, get use to the speed of the defense, and see what the defense is doing(lets face it, you can be on the sideline all you want but it is not the same as playing) The worst version of the two quarterback system is when you have designated series for each player(i.e. smith plays first two series and zwick comes in for the third). While I agree that i does make a defense game plan for two diffrent looks, all they will have to do is look at who is in the huddle and then call a diffrent play. Unless you have a quarterback that can act like a closer in baseball (not bob wickman) or the 6th man on a basketball team and just provide a spark off the bench, the platoon of qb's wont work. Lets face it, there are just not many d1 college qb's that see themselves as a spark off the bench(if they don't mind this then chances are they don't have the physicall skills you are looking for to begin with) As a longhorn fan I would love nothing more than for ya'll to have a two qb system, it may not get us a win, but in my mind it is a huge plus for the longhorns.
