Too true - and with no knock on Zbikowski ....
Nor can they get a car for knocking in a whole in one during an invitational golf tournament. (because that would capitalize on their celebrity).
Yet Tommy Z likely gets a better break leading up to this bout - what with Angelo Dundee in his corner - and we can honestly say that has zero to do with his celebrity?

IIRC, it was because he was going to accept commercial endorsements from his skiing, not because of his getting prize money from winning/placing in any events.

This "fight" is likely to be depressing for any OSU fan: As was noted, they're not going to put Tommy Z. (who they'll surely start calling "the golden Boy" soon) up against anyone who can actually fight. I'd put the odds of the "opponent" embarassing OSU by, in combination, wearing OSU gear, running his mouth, and fighting like Lamont from "Revenge of the Nerds" at about 99%. Then ESPN will make it worse with Buckeye-dissing comments on SportsCenter. If they had to have a Buckeye couldn't they have just gotten Randleman or Isaman?

The irony of this whole thing is unbelievable (although I'm not yet sure if it is the real irony or the Alanis Morissette kind).
Jeremy Bloom was a world-class skier. He competed in the Olympics. He needed endorsements to ski because that is the way skiing is setup. However, those endorsements were going to be based almost exclusively on his skiing prowess. If it weren't for the NCAA challenge, very few people would've even known he was a football player and skier.
I'm sure Zbikowski is a good boxer. However, I have my doubts that his boxing prowess alone is enough to warrant him getting this kind of draw and fighting in MSG. It's obvious that the draw for this fight is his status as a Notre Dame football player. His opponent is even wearing a Buckeye uniform to the ring.
So on one hand, Bloom's money and draw would be coming from his skiing prospects with no regard to his status as a NCAA S-A. On the other hand, Zbikowski's money and draw is based just as much (and arguably more) on his status as a NCAA S-A than his boxing prospects. Yet, by technicality, Zbikowski is free to take money and Bloom is not.

Bloom could have kept prize money, but not endorsement money. Because endorsements are where the real money is, he had to give up football. It sucked for Bloom, since as a World Champion he earned what was coming to him, but I understand the NCAA's position on that. A shady booster could pay football players 'endorsement' money, using their mediocre level of participation in another sport as the excuse to funnel them cash.
The shady nature of boxing promotions makes it more of a questionable area for me than somebody that's winning prize money in events like skiing, golf, or tennis.
I'm not saying Zbikowski is doing anything wrong, I just think there's a potential for abuse in boxing.
Does anybody know how much money Zbikowski is getting for this fight?
