The drama swirling around a one-time Georgia football signee in Zachary Evans is expected to extend beyond Wednesday.

Evans, considered a heavy lean to sign with Georgia football, was expected to announce his school of choice during the Under Armour All-America Game early last month. The running back didn’t, for whatever reason, although he did confirm that he had already signed with an unnamed school during the Early Signing Period but wasn’t ready to reveal it.

Shortly thereafter, there was yet another twist as it was confirmed that Evans had signed with Georgia — but was not expected to enroll at the university. A day later, the Georgia football program washed its hands of the situation by releasing Zachary Evans from his National Letter of Intent. Not only that, but the release is a full one, with no restrictions. That meant that other schools are now free to not only contact the mercurial talent but add him to their roster.

Wednesday is National Signing Day. Evans, though, isn’t expected to pick a school. In fact, it could be a while before he settles on one.

“A source tells 247Sports that the Houston (Texas) North Shore five-star is looking towards March visits once the dead period ends after February,” the recruiting website wrote.

As for potential landing spots? From the same site:

He still has one official in play and if Florida is pushing, they seem to still be a school Evans wants to go check out. LSU and Texas A&M both received officials during the season. The Tigers have moved on from Evans while the Aggies still seem to be involved. Ole Miss and Tennessee received officials in January. I could see a spike in his recruitment again following spring football and depth charts changing with the transfer portal.”

Tennessee, Ole Miss and Texas A&M are considered finalists, but Evans is unpredictable.

Evans is also a handful off the field. Case in point: In addition to the commitment kerfuffles, Evans was sent home from his high school’s state championship football game in December because the back failed to comply with his coaches’ edict to give up his cellphone. Seriously.

Why is the coach trying to take his cellphone? Can tell him to put it away or just not play him, seems a bit extreme

Let’s not be stupid about this with meaningless red herring arguments. You’re better than that.

If he had a clear policy that the night before the game that all phones / etc. were to be turned in, darn straight, that’s his right. Mind you, per info out there, this was the straw that broke the proverbial back.

I don't know any of the details behind what happened, but I am a teacher and I take cell phones away from my students in class all the time.

Again, without knowing all the specifics, it's hard to know if the coach went overboard or not, but he has no use for a cell phone on the football field so if one of my players had one I would take it away too.

Edit: Oh, so it was the night before?

In isolation, sending a player home because of a cell phone seems like an incredibly stupid thing in this day and age. Discipline is coached in small moments every day - not these antiquated gestures from a different era.

But, I doubt any rational coach would take that action based on that alone.

In addition, I really doubt UGA pulls on offer based on that alone.

It's too bad. Kid is what, 17-19? Seems really young to piss away opportunities at this scale.

Sending a kid home because he blatantly defied a coaches orders and then argued about it in front of the team is not some "antiquated gesture from a different era". It's the same mindset in kids these days that have them think it's OK to tell a teacher to "**** off" in class...that rules don't apply to them.

A teacher was able to take your calculator prior to a math test (back before kids had smart phones), and then give it back to you afterwards. Temporarily confiscating--and subsequently returning--"contraband" is not the same as taking money from someone.

Five-star running back Zachary Evans has yet to reach a decision on where he'll be taking his talents to at the collegiate level, but Florida is making a run at one of the most coveted prospects in the 2020 recruiting class. Florida recruiting expert Blake Alderman is one of three recruiting analysts to recently project Evans winding up with the Gators, with Alderman submitting his 247Sports Crystal Ball projection for Evans to Florida back on Feb. 22.
