Thanks for the memories Calbuck, Much as I love Warfield it took him time to become a player. I saw him drop at least four or five wide-open-nothing-between-he-and-the-goalline-but-grass passes that first year. He also had problems with keeping his balance, until the Michigan game at Ann Arbor, where he went wild. On one 50 yard dash he squared up with the Michigan safety, faked him so bad the guy fell backwards and Warfield ran RIGHT OVER him and down the sidelines.

Woody told the story of calling him in after his sophmore year, giving him a football and telling him, "I want you to take this with you, toss it up in the air and catch it while you walk to class. I'm going to be looking for you, and you better have that ball with you." Must have worked.

Unverferth had a better than average arm and actually passed more than Sparma... all time homliest Buckeye, Arnie Chonko (another great football name), was also in the QB mix. Woody finally turned him into a starter on defense.

Ah, Yes, Big Birtho. Looked like the nutty professor in a football uniform. 300 pounds at a time when 250 was HUGE. Woody put him on kickoff teams... looked like an enormous scarlet bowling ball rolling down the field and blockers would just bounce off of him. The crowd loved him!
