Youngstown St. at tOSU, Sat. 9/9, 12pm EST, BTN

I don’t get saving things for anyone… even if you have just 1 formation you can wreck a team if you have enough plays (particularly ones that compliment).

Just go out with the aim to get first downs on a play and it’ll take care of itself. I don’t understand treating teams differently because they may have less talent etc.

I also don’t understand just running the ball when you’re up 42-0 in the second half either. Sure would’ve been nice to have Kyle with another 50 throws under his belt right? The hell with it, you aren’t playing YSU again (same goes for Arkansas State, Toledo, etc) so who cares how many points you put up. Go out and execute your full offense with the imagination you’re playing TTUN.

Besides, how does playing conservative help prepare your team for ND or eventually TTUN.

I watched the LT get physically whipped more than once.

"Gel-ing" against an undermanned D2 school won't change that once they get to the big boy part of the schedule.

As said above, Simmons was confused rather than being physically outmanned...he was blocking grass and missing blitzes and stunts. But where I will diverge from @Captain Buckeye a bit is that Simmons transferred late and missing assignments/learning the scheme was to be expected imo. Obviously that cannot continue, but it is a fixable thing as he progresses, whereas getting beat physically is not something that gets fixed during the season. Even against a D2 school, it is an opportunity to work together against defensive opponents that they don't face every day.

If it persists though, either Tegra comes in, or Fryar moves to LT and one of Montgomery or Tegra starts at RT imo. Montgomery is a grown-ass man that I think will probably earn a spot regardless of being a true frosh.

One other thing to keep in mind. While the penguins are completely overmatched, their OL is not like the FCS teams that your think of normally. They go 6'6 300+ across the OL

Youngstown plays in the Missouri Valley Football Conference, the same one that has North Dakota State and South Dakota State. They're probably going to finish in the top 3 of that conference this year.

Last year Iowa beat South Dakota State 7-3 with two safeties and a field goal.

The OL looks the part of FBS teams. Have to be gig up front to win against the Dakota teams . YSU gave Kentucky a lot of trouble last year until their 65 scholarship depth showed up.
Good to know and please keep contributing. We don't know anything about YSU, so it is nice to have information heading into the game. Our DL is probably our strength outside the WR group, so hopefully they do get tested by your OL so we have a benchmark of where they are at. Looking forward to the game.

If YSU makes this a game because they’re able to stop our offense that’s going to be bad news. Like the boos that will reign down (pathetically I’ll add) will be embarrassing.

As for the YSU line being bigger. They’re matched up with one of the best DLs in FBS ball so that’s not a concern in the least.

Oh we better score 60+ points or else I agree, there is no reason our offense shouldn't do that. On the OL, not concerned but hopefully the DL gets some resistance just for the sake of improvement. Size isn't everything on the OL, but I want a battle so we keep improving...especially Sawyer, who really needs to come along soon.

I thought I saw him just getting pushed into the backfield a lot but I only watched it live. If people are re-watching/breaking it down and it's just assignment issues then I am greatly relieved.

I am rewatching in a bit, but everything I saw live was mostly assignment issues rather than getting beat by his man. I was watching Simmons very closely because he is the #1 key to success this year on offense, but I will rewatch it today.

There was one rep I remember he got pushed back on a bull rush but many OL will get pushed back on a rush. Just a matter of not giving up a sack which he didn’t do.

Tools are there but got a ways to go that’s for sure. Someone said we ran a different run play the first like 7 times we ran the ball and if so then maybe we should consider backing off so much variety. How about be good at 1-2 runs first before expanding our variety? Besides, you can run the ball one certain way through what 1-9 rush lanes?

Just because you run 1 sort of run doesn’t mean the defense will align correctly to take away WHERE you want to run the ball.

Ohio State will win handily, but I expect the Penguins to make some plays on an inconsistent basis. Penguins are built like the old Tressel teams. Best players on defense, do the best you can not to turn the ball over and establish a run game. That's how they play. However, the RB from last year is a big loss. He was an undrafted player in the NFL and looks like he will be the starting RB for the Denver Broncos.

If YSU has to pass (which I think they will) it's going to be ugly. Most Penguin fans are buckeye fans. Tressel always scheduled YSU games when Ohio State wasn't playing so fans could watch both. But since the mid 2000's scheduling has been more centralized and we can't do it as much. They still try

All I'm saying is that the OL will look like a MAC team (actually better than most MAC teams). But YSU doesn't have the QB Toledo has.

Jaleel McLaughlin was a transfer from D2 that YSU head coach thought could contribute. He was seen as too small. But he's lighting fast. He broke the NCAA rushing record at YSU with the all time leading rushing record of 8,166 years averaging 6.5 yards per carry.

The Penguins have a lot to figure out.

The interesting part to watch for me is Marcus Hooker playing against his old team.

He's the starting safety and he's excellent at the FCS level. Since his departure due to a DUI while at Ohio State, he's been a great fit at YSU.

The Penguins also have Bryce Oliver who transferred from Kentucky. He's a great receiver at the FCS level.

YSU gave Kentucky fits for about 2 quarters and then the depth showed bared their ass (since they only have 63 scholarships at the FCS level). Overall, however, YSU is better than most MAC teams in my opinion and it's the reason they won't play YSU anymore. YSU used to beat those teams consistently and hurt their recruiting under Tressel. After YSU beat Kent State at home in 1997, they passed a rule where The D1 teams couldn't come and play at FCS stadiums.

I'm a HUGE Buckeye fan. I've attended many of the Buckeye cruises (Cruise for Cancer) and I've attended many games.

I just hope they can be respectable for a couple quarters before the they give into the weight and depth of the Buckeyes.

Here's an FCS message board (free of course) that's the leader for FCS football. You guys that don't follow FCS are missing out on some great football. I like it because I watch both levels.

Here's a link to the YSU vs Ohio State thread this week.

The following would be nice to see from McCord in this game:

Making accurate passes to intermediate and deep receivers.
Throwing receivers open,
Moving around in the pocket to avoid pressure,
Throwing it away when it isn't there,
Make plays in the red zone,
Make a few good zone reads,
Run for a couple first downs if the defense gives it up,
No fumbles, no picks.

I know I'm not asking for much..........

Adjusted 37% completion (1-3) on throws 10+ yards, Meanwhile he graded out as tied as the least pressured QB nationally in week 1, and Marv was only covered in man twice (1 PBU, 1 inc).

I would REALLY like to see his deep ball accuracy improve, especially if he’s well protected and Marv is in zone coverage. Against the blitz he was 50%… The throws just have to be there, no question.

I should also mention that YSU's LB's are the strength of the team. We get pressure when we blitz them against FCS teams. Different story against the Buckeyes. If the OL play doesn't improve from last week, the Penguins may be able to get to the QB from time to time. DL is pretty good, especially the DE's.

Not Ohio State, but respectable. Fun to watch the FCS level. The playoff system is outstanding. You guys can back the Penguins without guilt because they don't play FBS. Like Tressel
