“I was happy about the offer, but I felt I earned it,” Wright said. “I was hoping I would get it. Both coach (Urban) Meyer and coach (Greg) Stud(rawa) were in the room, but coach Meyer was the one that said (I had the offer).

“I liked coach Meyer. He’s a cool guy.”

June 13 was the first time Wright had been to Ohio State.

“I went up with our wide receivers coach,” Wright said. “We got a tour after the camp. I liked it up there. It was nice. I’ll try to get back for a game.”
Wright said he didn’t really grow up a fan of West Virginia or any other team, and doesn’t currently have a favorite. But he does like the Buckeyes.

“They’re up there,” Wright said when asked where Ohio State stands among the schools that have offered him a scholarship.

"Before that visit I was at Ohio State for a camp," he said. "It was a great visit. There were really nice people everywhere there. They were happy and they all said 'hello.' I talked to the offensive line coach for a while. It was about just being a person and stuff like that. It wasn't even football stuff. It was more about life.

A PAIR OF MOUNTAINS AT TACKLE?

Reactions from Ohio State’s thrilling win over Penn State continue to pour in, with Huntington, West Virginia, four-star offensive tackle Darnell Wright among the latest to share his experience on campus.

“I had a good time,” Wright told Eleven Warriors. “Always good to see the coaches and players again.”

Saturday's trip marked Wright's third visit to campus, the last time on campus being the loss to Oklahoma. Offensive line coach Greg Studrawa offered him a scholarship during a one-day camp in June, and the two have grown particularly close in the months since.

“We have a good relationship,” Wright said. “He is a great coach.”

Ohio State already holds a commitment from fellow West Virginian Doug Nester and remains in hot pursuit of other highly sought-after offensive tackles Michael Tarquin, Quinn Carroll, John Olmstead, so I don’t anticipate the staff will push for Wright’s pledge anytime soon. That’s fine with him because he’d like to see a few more schools before making a decision, anyway.

No word of any visits to Columbus in the near future either but that could change. We'll see if the staff pays him a visit during the spring evaluation period or not. Either way, tOSU will survive with or without Mr. Wright I assure you.

Five-Star OL Darnell Wright Visiting Ohio State This Weekend

Darnell-Wright-Featured-1000x780.jpg

Five-star West Virginia (Huntington HS) offensive tackle Darnell Wright is visiting Ohio State this weekend. He posted a photo on social media on Saturday to let people know that he was in Columbus taking a tour.

This is not Wright’s first trip to OSU — he visited for a couple of games last season — nor is it expected to be his final trip to OSU. The Buckeyes should receive one of Wright’s five official visits, should he choose to utilize his entire allotment.

Wright (6-6 314) is the No. 1 offensive tackle in the 2019 class per the 247Sports Composite and the No. 5 player overall. Rivals has him as their No. 2 player overall, while ESPN has him at No. 6, and 247Sports’ own rankings have him all the way down at No. 13.

Wright has been to Tennessee and North Carolina a couple of times each over the last few months. He holds offers from all of the top schools, including Ohio State, Alabama, Clemson, Georgia, Florida State, Oklahoma, Michigan State, and the like.

As to where he may be leaning, that’s a good question. With just seven predictions in at this point, Ohio State holds the Crystal Ball lead.

The personal rivalry that nearly got between Ohio State and 5-star offensive tackle Darnell Wright

FRISCO, Texas -- On the surface it sounded so silly, a five-star prospect potentially leaving Ohio State out of the mix because of a rivalry with one of the Buckeyes' commits. Petty. So I didn't even ask about that specifically.

But offensive tackle Darnell Wright took it there anyway.

Instead I asked Wright the reason behind his surprise visit to OSU last weekend. On its own it was a big deal, Wright being the No. 1 offensive tackle in the Class of 2019 and that being Ohio State's biggest positional need in this cycle. It also had seemed like in recent months that Wright and the Buckeyes had drifted apart some.

"I had been trying to find a time to get up there," Wright said. "I'm not gonna lie, I was thinking I wasn't gonna go up there. I have other options ... I liked them before, but I didn't really know what I was trying to do."

Liked. Past tense. Something changed the way Wright viewed Ohio State. The Buckeyes went from the perceived favorite early on in his recruitment as he piled up a couple of visits -- short trips from Huntington, West Virginia to Columbus -- to falling behind the likes of Tennessee, UNC, Alabama and the other schools Wright was giving more attention.

The truth is that OSU should have never been considered the front-runner it was for a time in the Wright sweepstakes. Far too early for that. It's also true that something did change how he viewed the Buckeyes.
