Wrestling Chat (WWF, WWE, WCW, etc.)

With no football on, I rewatched the 1992 Rumble match last night. If you have an hour to kill, it's a great watch, especially considering the strap was on the line and the sheer star power. The roster was legit 25 deep then, with 80s stars and young guys like Michaels and the UT. I had forgotten how physically imposing Sid was when he was younger. It's really hard to believe that only 3 years later, Flair would be in the WCW, most of those guys were retired, and the WWF would put out the worst assortment of garbage imaginable at the Rumble in 1995.
I watched it about six weeks ago and agree completely. It's really a shame that Flair went to NY during a really crappy "down" period for wrestling.

Also, no matter how they want to spin it, mid 90s WWF was total shit. Sure, they take shots at how bad WCW was, but nothing was as bad as that.

Finally, I recently saw Sid/Kerry Von Erich from 88 World Class/CWA leading into SuperClash III. Amazing how a coked out guy with one foot and a green as grass wrestler can put on a really good match without any aerial maneuvers. It was fantastic.

If you look at the WM 1992 card, it's amazing how much talent they blew. They could have done so much with Sid, Rick Martel (long run as AWA champ), and several others. Instead we got 4-6 years of the Kliq facing each other and guys like the Dumpster, Bastion Booger, and Adam Bomb. I would watch every PPV from WCW in 1995 before I would watch a full one of WWF. To those out there who haven't seen that era, watch the 95 Rumble Match for guys like the Mantaur, Eli Blu, Tom Pritchard, and 50 year old Dick Murdoch. Half the entries were broken up tag teams. Just awful.

Yep - in the mid 90s not only did 98% of the storylines completely suck, but the physical roster itself was crap. You had Hitman, Taker and HBK and a pile of crap otherwise. While the lack of talent on the roster can be possibly explained by the steroid trial and all that, the storyline stuff is just lazy writing like it is now....

There was some good talent but they were never used correctly....gimmick after gimmick

Vader I think was an elite heel....but he never got the title. A huge guy with insane athleticism....he was ahead of his time. Psycho Sid was great but they were idiots to let him talk as much as he did....Razor Ramon, another guy that if he got the title maybe wouldn't have defected. Instead one of the few rare heel champs we got was Yokozuna because....well, um, he was really big. Did he ever have a good match? I'll always remember, don't know what year, the Rumble he and Macho Man were the final 2....and they thought, "you know what'll be a great twist? Randy, you go for the pin! And Yoko, you press him out of the ring!" Real smart....

Ramon was always going to go to WCW because of the money that was guaranteed. Vince wasn't going to do it and didn't until he had no other choice.

Vader was used right in WCW for the most part...Vince just had an aversion to guys that had been established stars elsewhere (Flair being somewhat of an exception).

That was easily the worst rumble finish ever, other than Vince winning. Ugh.

That first part you mentioned is exactly why I have doubts about how AJ Styles will be used. He could easily win the Rumble and be over IMO but I bet Vince makes him an IC kind of guy. Same for Nakamura.

I wouldn't be surprised to not see AJ out of NXT for a year. I wouldn't be surprised to see he and Joe never leave NXT. No way Vince is going to allow a full-on TNA guy to beat his guys for the title. Look after 2001, none of the WCW guys ever held Vince's title. Hell the only reason Goldberg even got the B title was to feed him and it back to HHH. I think everyone getting hopes up are going to be really disappointed.

Does the Big Slow count as a WCW guy? He's won the WWE title since 2001...

Yeah, kind of, but he went over well before the MNW ended, so one could argue he contributed to Vince winning it (though I don't know that he's ever really been over). But, even if you count him, that's 2 guys, basically.

He sure does, but I think that was a unique case since he came before the merger and was a big coupe at the time.

He needs to head off for retirement with Kane and a few others...
Giants are overexposed in this era of wrestling. Andre never stayed in a territory long enough to kill the novelty, whereas Big Show never had that luxury. Andre would do battle royals, team with the big star to defeat two villains, or show up just to sell tickets twice a year. Big Show got pinned by Rey Mysterio. Stupid.

Tell you what though....seeing that dude do a drop kick in his younger/thinner days was something to behold...
