Glenn Has Knee Surgery; Hopes To Play This Year

IRVING, Texas - There is a chance Terry Glenn could play for the Cowboys this season after all.

The wide receiver underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right knee Thursday morning, a procedure that could allow him to return to field this year, team spokesman Rich Dalrymple announced during the team's practice at Valley Ranch.

Glenn visited Dr. Christopher Kaeding at Ohio State Medical Center in Columbus, Ohio with the intention of "doing whatever was needed" to potentially return this year, according to Dalrymple.

The surgery, performed by Dr. Kaeding, OSU's team surgeon who was at the school when Glenn played there from 1994-96, was an arthroscopic procedure to clean out loose bodies in the knee.

"Terry really wants to play this season," Dalrymple said. "And this was a procedure that allows Terry to play this year."

Dalrymple said there was no timetable for Glenn's potential return.

"Some players certainly would've said 'my season is through,'" head coach Wade Phillips said. "For him to say I'm going to try everything I can to be a part of this team, I think tells you what kind of person he is. I don't have any feel for it how long it could be. But we're certainly going to save a spot for him."

Glenn, who missed all of the preseason after undergoing surgery on Aug. 1 to remove a small cyst on the back of his right kneecap, returned to practice Sept. 5, only to suffer cartilage damage unrelated to his previous injury.

It was determined that Glenn would either need to have arthroscopic surgery that would allow him to play this year, but could cause some long-term damage to his knee, or he could have the microfracture surgery that would not only end his season this year, but also jeopardize his career, considering Glenn turned 33 in July.

Glenn gets to the heart of the matter
By Jennifer Floyd Engel
Star-Telegram staff writer

"She" certainly is not lacking in the guts department.

How else do you explain the willingness of Terry Glenn to gamble his knee on an "if?"

She, of course, was how Big Bill infamously referred to the wide receiver when the Patriots used their first-round pick on Glenn rather than some defensive player. It was eventually forgotten between them, but the image stuck.

Glenn became seen as "she" and all that it implies.

But if Cowboy fandom did not know how wrong the moniker was before this week, they do now. Glenn decided to forgo season-ending microfracture surgery on his right knee and chose an arthroscopic method to remove cartilage from behind his kneecap in hopes of returning this season. It is not guaranteed. It merely gives him a chance.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said Friday the team is looking at a four-to-six-weeks range, after which "he'll be able to see if he's on go."

Regardless of what happens, what Glenn did is, well, gutsy... and some other body parts.

"Some players certainly would have said, 'My season is through,'" Coach Wade said. "For him to say, 'I want to try everything I can to be a part of this team,' I think tells you what kind of person he is."

IRVING, Texas - With the Cowboys hoping to maintain their undefeated start Monday night against Buffalo, wide receiver Terry Glenn continues his arduous rehab from a second arthroscopic knee surgery in a span of six weeks.

Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones said Glenn's rehab from the Sept. 13 surgery is going well, but he didn't want to speculate on a timetable for the veteran receiver's return.

"He's very ambitiously and aggressively doing everything he can rehabbing and he fully expects to play," Jones said of Glenn's return during the 2007 season.

Glenn's Knee Rehab Continues

IRVING, Texas - Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips spoke to wide receiver Terry Glenn about his rehab from arthroscopic knee surgery and said the 12th-year veteran is another "week or two" from taking the next step in his recovery.

Phillips said Glenn, who hasn't practiced since undergoing a Sept. 13 scope to remove torn cartilage, is now working to rebuild the strength in his quadriceps that was lost following the surgery.

"His spirits are good," Phillips said. "He's in the process of doing that, which will take probably a week or two. Then they'll go from there. Then he can start jogging and so forth. It's going to be a little while before we know exactly where he is."

Spot still there for Dallas Cowboys' Glenn
Wideout needs to show he can make cuts, explode out of breaks

IRVING ? Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones wouldn't say unequivocally that receiver Terry Glenn will return to the field this season.

But he agreed that it's a good sign the Cowboys have kept Glenn on the roster through 13 weeks of the season, given that all 53 spots are precious.

"It shows what impact that we feel he can make on our team," Jones said. "And secondly, it shows we think there's a realistic chance he can come back and help us."

While Jones was speaking, Glenn passed through on his way to the weight room with associate trainer Britt Brown, and Glenn wasn't favoring his injured right knee.

Glenn originally injured the knee Sept. 5 in practice. He had surgery to remove a cyst in August, then had another surgery in September after swelling surfaced to remove loose cartilage. During the second surgery, it was determined Glenn didn't need to undergo season- and possibly career-ending microfracture surgery.

Jones declined to put a timetable on Glenn's return, saying "It has to be a feel thing." The Cowboys can activate Glenn at any point, provided he remains on the 53-man roster. Glenn has been running, but he still needs to prove he can make cuts and explode out of his breaks.

On Monday, receiver Patrick Crayton credited Glenn with being a "big brother" in his development as a pro and said his return would be a big boost to the NFL's second-ranked offense.

"For one, it'd be a set of fresh legs," Crayton said. "And it's another playmaker for a defense to have to game-plan. Regardless of whether it's his first game back, no defense is going to ignore that."

Cowboys willing to wait for Glenn
By Stephen Hawkins / Associated Press
Article Launched: 12/06/2007 10:27:43 PM MST

IRVING, Texas -- The Dallas Cowboys have kept Terry Glenn on their roster all season, and they're willing to wait until the playoffs for him to catch his first pass.
Even after Glenn's secondoperation on his right knee in six weeks in mid-September, the33-year-old receiver remained on the Cowboys' 53-man roster.

"It shows what impact that we feel he can make on our team," owner Jerry Jones said. "It shows we think there is a realistic chance he can come back and help us."

Glenn's rehabilitation has escalated to running, though he isn't necessarily running routes or making cuts yet.

"He is doing things that give you an indication that he's got a real shot here" to play this season, Jones said after visiting with Glenn this week. "He sure is positive, and it's feeling good. His leg is good. When he is positive, I am positive."

Jones said Glenn won't haveto play in any of the last fourregular-season games to be part of the postseason plans for the Cowboys.

Optimism Grows Over Glenn's Potential Return

DETROIT - Terry Glenn is another step closer to potentially returning from his Sept. 13 knee surgery this season.

The Cowboys' veteran receiver has begun running routes during his rehab exercises and caught some balls from practice squad quarterback Richard Bartel during a productive workout this past Friday.

There's a chance Glenn could participate some in this week's practices, though Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones said even if he did Glenn wouldn't be ready for next Sunday's game against Philadelphia. The team's Dec. 22 road game at Carolina is a possibility, however, Jones said.

"He's working his tail off and they're doing a good job on him," Jones said of Glenn's diligent rehab with Cowboys assistant trainer Britt Brown and the rest of the Cowboys' training staff. "No one knows, but from where we are right now relative to what we've got planned for him this week and next week, I'm positive."

You can expect some 'wow' moments with Glenn's return
By JENNIFER FLOYD ENGEL
Star-Telegram Staff Writer

What once seemed like a pipe dream, Glenn playing this season, feels like a foregone conclusion now, what with him returning to practice this week and Owner Jones gushing on just how far he has come since having knee surgery in September.

The big question has become: Just how good will Glenn be?

And on this matter, I defer to my notes. Prepare to be wowed.

This is a group of about 10 of us who think this way, I realize. Hardly anybody believes Glenn is going to play this season and those who do are pretty convinced he is going to be bad.

What little we have learned about Glenn in his fifth Cowboys season is he personifies a game player. This was a favorite term of Bill Parcells, his way of saying you can trust this guy. He is going to be with you on Sundays.

Glenn has not worked this hard to limp out and be a nonfactor. He is going to be there on Sundays. And this is a good thing.

Notebook: Dallas Cowboys' Glenn has first practice of season

Phillips says he isn't counting out receiver playing this year

IRVING ? For weeks, Cowboys wide receiver Terry Glenn has been running on his surgically repaired right knee.

He had been a ghost in some ways at Valley Ranch because few people knew when he might return.

Well, on Wednesday, Glenn returned to practice for the first time since the season started.

Coach Wade Phillips did not rule out Glenn returning for a game this season.

"If he's able to play, we'd certainly like for him to play," Phillips said. "If he's able to play at a high level, I wouldn't count him out."

Glenn didn't wear a jersey or helmet when he practiced, just an Ohio State baseball hat, blue sweatshirt, his customary long white shorts and a sleeve on his right knee.

When Glenn will return is uncertain, but seeing him on the practice field is an encouraging sign for the high-powered Cowboys offense.

"I don't see how it can hurt us in any way," quarterback Tony Romo said. "It depends on how he's able to come back from the injury. The thing I know about Terry is he's a passionate guy. I don't think he would go out there if he can't go."

Glenn has undergone two surgeries on his right knee since training camp. On Aug. 1, he had a cyst removed. Glenn could have undergone the dreaded microfracture surgery, which could have ended his season and possibly his career, but he elected to have his articular cartilage repaired Sept. 13.

Kevin Hardy, a former Cowboys linebacker, had the same surgery when he played for Cincinnati in 2001.

But having microfracture surgery could be in Glenn's plans down the line if he continues to have problems with his knee.

Phillips Hopeful Glenn Returns For Carolina

IRVING, Texas - Even if it's only for a few plays, Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips is "hopeful" wide receiver Terry Glenn will make his season debut Saturday at Carolina.

Phillips said he thinks Glenn will practice some this week, having run a few routes with the team last week for the first time since his Sept. 13 knee scope to remove damaged cartilage.

"'Hopeful' would be a nice word," Phillips said Monday of Glenn's chances to play Saturday. "You'd like it to be like the third and fourth preseason game, really, where you could play him a little bit and then play him a little bit more the next game."

Glenn still on standby for Dallas Cowboys

Thursday, December 20, 2007
By ALBERT BREER / The Dallas Morning News

IRVING ? Time is running short on Terry Glenn getting on the field before the Dallas Cowboys reach the playoffs.

Glenn is one of three injured players, joining Andre Gurode and Patrick Watkins, who won't make the trip to Charlotte, N.C., today. Coach Wade Phillips said Thursday morning that he'd make an assessment on Glenn's condition at practice, and after the workout decided that Glenn wasn't quite ready.

As has been the case all week, Glenn participated on a limited basis in seven-on-seven work but was held out of team drills. For the 30 minutes the media was present at practice, Glenn was off to the side, without a helmet.

"We're going based on how he feels, and [head athletic trainer] Jim Maurer and our doctors and [associate athletic trainer] Britt [Brown], how they feel about him," Phillips said. "Some of it's confidence. Anytime coming off an injury or an operation, how a player feels, how confident he is, I don't want them to get out there if they're not confident."

Although the team hopes Glenn can play in the season finale against the Redskins, Phillips also has said he wouldn't hesitate to put the veteran in a playoff game even if he doesn't get in a regular-season contest.

Cowboys still waiting for bonus from Glenn
By MAC ENGEL
Star-Telegram Staff Writer

IRVING -- The wait for the return of Cowboys receiver Terry Glenn is not over.

The cross-your-fingers hope of having him back on the field as early as Saturday night in Charlotte, N.C., against the Panthers has all but been ruled out.

Cowboys coach Wade Phillips said earlier this week that he hoped to see Glenn play in a limited role against the Panthers. But after a walk-through practice Thursday, hope was downgraded to doubtful. The Cowboys now hope he can play in the regular-season finale, at Washington on Dec. 30.

Make no mistake, Glenn wants to play. Now. He knows that at 33 years old and with the Cowboys at 12-2, he might never have a better shot of reaching the Super Bowl.

In route: Dallas Cowboys' WR Glenn set to return

09:28 PM CST on Wednesday, December 26, 2007
By CALVIN WATKINS / The Dallas Morning News

IRVING ? All last year, Terry Glenn thought this would be a special Cowboys team. After the disappointing first-round exit from the playoffs last season, he trained hard, with expectations for a special season in 2007.

And 2007 has been special for the Cowboys as evidenced by their 13-2 record and with numerous offensive and individual records being set.

The only problem is Glenn has missed most of the season.

He has undergone two knee surgeries that kept him off the field until now.

Glenn is expected to make his season debut Sunday afternoon against Washington.

"I think he saw it early, team-wise, that this could be a special season," coach Wade Phillips said. "He had to have that feeling. We won some games early, and a lot of teams win games early, but I think he felt there's a feeling with it."

TERRY GLENN
Notable: Glenn needs one reception to move up to 48th on the all-time list for the most catches in NFL history. He also needs seven catches to tie Atlanta's Joe Horn for 44th. Glenn is also 46 yards away from tying Mark Duper for 47th all time in receiving yards.
