Pryor: 'I played awful'
September 8, 2013

What happened today was unacceptable, and that’s on me.

Terrelle Pryor

Raiders drop opener to Colts, 21-17

INDIANAPOLIS – Terrelle Pryor says he played “awful.”

Not so sure about that, TP. Sounds a bit extreme.

The Raiders quarterback had more than 300 yards of total offense in Sunday’s 21-17 loss to the Indianapolis Colts at Lucas Oil Stadium. He threw a touchdown pass and orchestrated two more scoring drives.

Didn’t matter. Not with two interceptions on his stat line. One came in the end zone on the Raiders first drive. The second cemented a heartbreaking loss.

Even in that vein, “awful” still doesn’t jive. Pryor made some magic and gave the Raiders a legitimate chance to win. A loss simply means he wasn’t good enough.

“I could’ve helped win the game and didn’t,” Pryor said. “We had ‘em on the ropes and we didn’t knock them out. The record is all that matters to me. I don’t care what my numbers are. I just want to do well for the team, and I didn’t do well enough.

What happened today was unacceptable, and that’s on me.”

Pryor’s frustration was clear. He didn’t try to hide it. The 24-year old beat himself up because he failed to reach his own lofty expectations.

“Please don’t write this as cocky because it’s not. Anytime I get on the field, I feel like I’m the best player out there and that my team is going to have a chance to win,” Pryor said. “That’s my job. I need to get the ball into the right hands and make plays. We have to get better. I know I do.”

Allen says Pryor understands he has to correct mistakes

Terrelle Pryor became the eighth quarterback since the 1970 merger to throw for at least 200 yards and run for at least 100 in a single game, but called his performance in the 21-17 loss to the Colts “awful.”

Pryor was referring to his two interceptions and a sack he took in the final minutes. Allen said the comment shows Pryor’s passion and agreed that, for all the highlight-reel plays, he needs to be better in his next start Sunday against Jacksonville.
“I wouldn’t go so far as to say that he was awful,” Allen said, “but he also understands that there’s some critical mistakes in the game that we got to get corrected because we can’t have those.”

While Pryor was 8 for 10 for 116 yards when the Colts blitzed, he completed just 1 of 7 throws longer than 20 yards. His first interception and a miss of a wide open fullback Marcel Reece downfield were the most costly.
“His ability to throw the ball on time, with accuracy … those are things that we want to see that he continues to improve,” Allen said. “Because that’s what’s going to make him a really good quarterback, is if he continues to improve in those areas.”

Terrelle Pryor a true student of the game
By Marcus Allen Krause on Sep 12 2013

Terrelle Pryor is the type of player that wants to watch everybody and everything that has to do with football and to figure out a way to adapt it to his own game. This is the number one most impressive thing about Pryor, the man just simply loves football. He is exactly the definition of being a student of the game, which is basically having an addiction to learning about football.

"Absolutely. My aunt, she said it the best way." said Terrelle Pryor in an interview yesterday, "When I was in college she said, 'Hey, guys that are great and they really care about what kind of player they want to be, I've seen it before." This is how she said it, you have a basket right? You see Tom Brady, you put something you like about Tom Brady in the basket. You see Michael Vick, you see Kaepernick, RGIII , any of those guys, anyone, just keep putting it in the basket and eventually you just keep adding and trying to get better and seeing where they're great at, and try to emulate that somewhat, and add it onto your skill, you're only going to get better."

Oakland Raiders learning to handle Terrelle Pryor going off script
By Jerry McDonald

ALAMEDA -- Life with Terrelle Pryor at quarterback means learning on the fly.

Repetition is everything in the NFL, with an emphasis on precision and footwork. Pryor is improving at that part of his game but does some of his best work extemporaneously, a jazz musician amid the concert band.

"Where it gets into a lot of the exciting stuff is when I take off and start to make a play, and that's just reaction," Pryor said. "If nothing's there with the reads, just react and go make a play."

In what was supposed to be a dreary matchup of two of the league's worst teams, Sunday's Raiders-Jaguars game should be a rather exciting affair. Terrelle Pryor won the Oakland starting quarterback job during the preseason and his play-making ability last week has fans excited. Sunday's home opener is sold out.

Pryor said he will "feed off" the crowd's "electricity," and his coaches and teammates hope to feed off his energy to even their record at 1-1.

In the 21-17 loss to the Colts, Pryor threw two interceptions, but he became the seventh NFL quarterback since 1960 to pass for 200 yards and run for 100 in a game. Besides running for first downs, Pryor bought time in the pocket until receivers broke open.

The receivers, running backs and offensive linemen know that the plays last longer with Pryor back there instead of Matt Flynn, who lost the job with a terrible third preseason game.

"It's a different mind-set for everybody and every position," Raiders offensive coordinator Greg Olson said. "Where's he going to be? He's not a pocket drop-back passer. That's not his game, and we certainly don't want that to become his game right now.

"As athletic as he is, we embellish and appreciate that part of Terrelle Pryor. Everyone is on their toes. When he does create, it creates excitement. I think the players feed off of it as much as the fans do."

With starting job in NFL, Terrelle Pryor doesn’t look back
By Todd Jones
The Columbus Dispatch Monday September 16, 2013

  • Ben Margot | Associated Press
Terrelle Pryor said of his five-year ban from Ohio State: “That’s my school, but they don’t really accept me. I’ve moved on to what I have now, and that’s just football.”

OAKLAND, Calif. — A crowd inched close to Terrelle Pryor’s locker as he leaned over and laced up his Nikes, the bright red high-tops clashing with his all-black outfit.

“O-H,” an elderly stranger yelled at the Oakland Raiders quarterback.

    “I-O,” replied Pryor, head bowed.

The former Ohio State star looked exhausted and sounded subdued after his first victory as an NFL starting quarterback. A Band-Aid covered Pryor’s right hand, which bled throughout Oakland’s 19-9 win yesterday over the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Such wounds are life in the NFL, which Pryor is embracing in his third season. His job is too demanding to spend time looking back on how his collegiate career ended prematurely because of his role in the tattoo scandal that landed OSU on NCAA probation and cost former coach Jim Tressel his job.

“That’s my school, but they don’t really accept me,” Pryor said. “I’ve moved on to what I have now, and that’s just football.”
