WR Ted Ginn, Jr. (Official Thread)

For those who are curious about the DB who got burned on that TD pass, Brent Musberger summed it up perfectly 7 years ago. "He beat Ross."

Ted Ginn has proven he can play WR
October, 11, 2013
By David Newton | ESPN.com

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Steve Smith recently relived his first year in the NFL under former Carolina Panthers coach George Seifert as he sat in front of his locker.

"Under Seifert all I did was play special teams and run reverses," the five-time Pro Bowl wide receiver said of the 2001 season. "I was not allowed to play wide receiver. I did not get in to run a pass route. All I did was run a reverse."

Smith easily could have been talking about teammate Ted Ginn, standing a few feet away. Over the past three seasons at San Francisco, Ginn caught 23 passes. He ran 11 times, contributing mostly as a kick returner.

Smith could relate.

AP Photo/Mike McCarnPanthers receiver Ted Ginn has 11 catches for 221 yards, and two touchdowns of 40-plus yards.
"Yeah, I ran a reverse every game," he recalled of his first season. "How do you play receiver if all you're in on is a reverse?"

Smith got his chance to play receiver because the Panthers fired Seifert after the 2001 season. New coach John Fox and offensive coordinator Dan Henning let him run routes, and Smith delivered with 54 catches and 872 yards in his second season.

He has since put up numbers that one day could land him in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Ginn is getting a similar chance in his first year with the Panthers. He already has 11 catches for 221 yards and two touchdowns of 40-plus yards after catching only two passes last season at San Francisco.

Panthers wide receiver Ted Ginn Jr. breaks free of a tackle attempt by Buccaneers linebacker Lavonte David during second-quarter action at Raymond James
TAMPA, Fla. Both of Ted Ginn Jr.’s most well-known attributes were on display in Thursday night’s 31-13 win against the Buccaneers.

Ginn showed his speed – what he’s been known from since high school – racing down the sideline in the second quarter for a 35-yard gain.

Then he showed off his more dubious attribute, one that’s plagued him since his days in Miami, when he dropped what could have been a 73-yard touchdown pass.

Still, Ginn proved to be an asset, finishing with a team-high 80 receiving yards on five catches as the Panthers cruised to their fourth win of the season.

Coach Ron Rivera said Ted Ginn "has been very special for us."
We're finally starting to see Ginn do some of the things he was expected to do when the Dolphins took him ninth overall way back in 2007. Through seven games, he has 20 catches for 357 yards (17.9 YPC) with two touchdowns, with six of those grabs going for 20+ yards.

Panthers wide receiver Ted Ginn Jr. had two catches for 1 yard a season ago with the San Francisco 49ers, but he has been a much bigger part of the Carolina offense.
As wide receiver Ted Ginn Jr. visited prospective teams this past offseason during his free agent tour, one thing stuck out about the Carolina Panthers.

Besides being on the verge of playoff contention in Ginn’s estimation, he thought the Panthers had something to prove.

So did he.

Ginn was San Francisco’s punt returner during the 49ers’ Super Bowl season in 2012, but he was the forgotten man in their receiving rotation. Ginn, a former first-round draft pick from Ohio State, caught two passes for 1 yard.

By comparison, rookie tight end Garrett Celek – the only undrafted free agent to make the Niners’ roster and the lesser-known, younger brother of Eagles tight end Brent Celek – had four receptions.

Neither Ginn nor Niners coach Jim Harbaugh shed much light on Ginn’s disappearing act this week as the Panthers prepared for Sunday’s game at San Francisco.

“I don’t even harp on it anymore,” Ginn said Thursday after practice. “I came here, got with my guys here. They brought me in with open arms, taught me the ropes. Now I got the opportunity to show what I have, and that’s all I’m doing.”

Ted Ginn, former 49er, becomes impact player with Carolina
By Matthew Barrows

SANTA CLARA – A 49ers team that has gone through half the season with little production from the No. 2 wide receiver and little pop from the return game will face a former teammate who's been making an impact in both areas.

Ted Ginn has 21 catches for 367 yards for Carolina through eight games and is averaging 17.5 yards per reception. That's better than any 49ers wide receiver other than Anquan Boldin, and it eclipses Ginn's numbers last season in San Francisco when he had just two catches for 1 yard.

The difference? The Panthers were forced to use Ginn as a receiver early this season, and he surprised them with the results.

Panthers coach Ron Rivera said this week that injuries to two receivers in training camp thrust Ginn up the depth chart. Before that, the Carolina coaches figured they would use him the way the 49ers did – mostly as a return man and occasionally as a receiver whose only role would be to use his speed to run straight down the field.

But the Panthers were impressed by Ginn's abilities on pass patterns, not just the deep ones, and he has been on the field for roughly half the team's offensive plays. By contrast, Ginn played 6 percent of the 49ers' offensive snaps last season.

"You open your eyes and are saying, 'Wow,' " Rivera said. "You're kind of saying, 'Where has all this been during his career?' "

The 49ers have noticed as well.

"As we all know, he's extremely fast, but he's caught the ball well," defensive coordinator Vic Fangio said. "He's caught the ball inside the numbers, outside the numbers. He's made some big plays for those guys."

Panthers’ Ted Ginn Jr. plays bigger role in San Francisco this time

Carolina wide receiver Ted Ginn Jr., mostly an afterthought in the receiving game for the San Francisco 49ers last season, played a big role for the Panthers on Sunday, including a punt return that set up the winning field goal. This first-half return was just the appetizer.

San Francisco With less than 8 minutes left in the fourth quarter, Ted Ginn Jr. casually caught an 11-yard pass from Cam Newton at the San Francisco 49 for a first down.

He dragged his back foot while his motion sent him slowly out of bounds. He stood there at the San Francisco sideline, staring at 49ers safety Bubba Ventrone.

Ventrone wasn’t even on the 49ers team last year, but that didn’t seem to bother Ginn, the former 49er.

In his return to Candlestick Park in the Panthers’ 10-9 victory Sunday, Ginn made it clear he was looking to make a statement against his old team.

Ginn finished with two catches for 19 yards, including that third-down conversion on the sideline, and returned three punts for 65 yards.

“Any time a team says we don’t want you anymore, obviously there’s a little bit of a chip on your shoulder,” said Panthers tight end Greg Olsen, who has played against Chicago twice since leaving the Bears after four seasons. “I know I felt that way for a while. I’m happy for him and happy for a lot of our guys that got wins.”
