WR/RB Lamaar "Flash" Thomas (transfer to New Mexico)

Looking back maybe he should have been brought in to play CB..

Also, makes you wonder what will happen to Corey Brown from this yrs class. The guy he's drawn a ton of comparisons to is Flash Thomas. Maybe he should play CB.

I highly doubt Flash would have come here as a CB...

Good luck, Lamaar. Hope you find success.

Lamaar was a great athlete who never quite developed into the WR we hoped he would become. Switching him to corner wouldn't have changed much.

As for Corey Brown, Jordan Hall is doing just fine. Corey will be his own player. Almost none of the buckeye player comparisons during recruiting hold water after enrollment, whether they were initially good (dukes, small) or bad (miller, hawk)

Re: In a text message, Thomas said he didn't know where he planned to transfer, but he said he hopes to play both receiver and running back at his next school.

You would think he would know where he wants to go before actually giving up his scholarship. If I didn't know where I wanted to go I'd stay in school winter/spring, keep academically eligible (taking courses that should transfer), keep working out in Ohio State's facilities, see how spring football goes, and then actually transfer this summer. What's the rush to leave Ohio State? If he transfers to a division 1A school he is going to have to sit out next year anyway.

Gotta be honest, I am really disappointed with this one. I still think Lamar could have been great here, but you can't blame him really, he didn't get much of a shot. I just remember being so excited when he committed and had a big AA bowl :(

Same here. I had really high hopes that he would do some special things for us. Good luck Lamaar.

I'd have loved to see JT figure out how to use him, but alas...it's just not what the Bucks do. I guess JT thought he could just turn him into a WR and that was that.

That strikes me as a bit harsh in regards to the staff. They ran plays for him last year with little success. They had him returning kicks and he was decent, but far from spectacular. His athleticism never translated into much of anything on the field, so I'm not sure what more the staff could really do?

Not that the staff went out of their way to work him into the game.....I wouldn't have minded seeing him get a couple more touches than he did this season.....but you generally don't build your offense around a WR/RB combo unless he's Percy Harvin.

Best of luck to him, regardless. I wouldn't hate seeing him land back at UMCP.

If I recall correctly Meyer had 3 kids come to FNL to audition to take over the Harvin role. Demps, Thomas and a third I can't recall. The rumor coming out of the FNL was just as Bucky Katt wrote, the athleticism didn't translate for Thomas, and that Demps was the better candidate. Thus UF went all out for Demps and not as hard for Thomas.

I was hoping that we would see Thomas line up more where Ted was in the "shot ginn." I thought that would be the perfect role for him taking pitches and being a rb while also running patterns and getting catches in space.

Oh well. Best of luck to Lamaar. I hope he does well in the future.

We'll probably never know what the 'real' reason was that it didn't work out. Tress & Co (as well as the other coaches on the planet), probably work on various options with each kid, trying to find the place that they fit best. I'm pretty sure that Flash took reps at rb, wr, db, ko returner, punt returner, etc. to see where he did best. It seems like OSU coaches will let a player play "where I think I should be", and if the depth is too great, or the talent level is too large, then the kid needs to come to that same conclusion. In the case of a lack of depth, then it appears that the coaches ask the kid to 'help the team out' and play xxxxx.

Everyone wants to be on the field, court, diamond, pitch, doing battle for the alma mater, and showcasing themselves. It must be hard at the age of 18-19 to admit that somewhere else would be best, and that where they are is not the stage for them.....and not be 'wooed' like they were in HS. Have only heard of one or two transferees that bad-mouthed OSU, so methinks Tress & Co handle these situations well.

Anyway, just a New Year diatribe, and heck, I'm sure that we all wish the best for these guys, as they were family for their stay. Just not if they happen to play against OSU in the future.

He had three kickoff drops in one game alone, and drops/bobbles in other games. Whether he was pressing too hard or just wasn't cut out for the position, he simply didn't reach the potential the staff thought he had and thus didn't see much PT. I truly hope he breaks through on his next team...

Damned shame really, but this is certainly a move that offers Thomas a fresh start.

Of course, I still think he could done exactly that in Columbus - re-dedication to the return game being just one route back up the depth chart.

Like others responding I'll wish him the best of luck wherever he now goes, hopefully he finds a spot where he has the playing time he yearns for. Given the deep WR corps current and incoming at tOSU, that probably seemed too unlikely to Thomas in 2010.

Thomas to transfer from OSU
Friday, January 8, 2010

Lamaar Thomas is leaving Ohio State because he wants a chance to play more, and the sophomore receiver/returner said yesterday that he's willing to sit out a season if that's what it takes.

"If that's the way I go, it wouldn't bother me because it would give me time to learn the offense even better," Thomas said.

Thomas would have to sit out next season if he transfers to another Football Bowl Subdivision school. North Carolina has been mentioned as a possibility, but Thomas likely will make some campus visits before making up his mind.

Thomas was learning to play receiver after being used primarily as a running back in high school. There were signs at midseason that the Buckeyes were trying to work him into the offense as a flanker who might take some handoffs, but it never materialized.

"With the receivers coming back (starters DeVier Posey and Dane Sanzenbacher), I'm not sure I was going to get that chance," Thomas said.
