U lands first '08 recruit: Cretin tailback Salamon

Gophers football coach Tim Brewster secured the first verbal commitment for his 2008 recruiting class Monday from Cretin-Derham Hall junior tailback Shady Salamon.

One of eight in-state juniors to receive an offer from Brewster, Salamon was the first to commit. Salamon is best friends with Cretin-Derham Hall star receiver Michael Floyd -- one of the nation's top recruits -- and Raiders quarterback John Nance. All three attended the team's Junior Day event this past weekend.

The Gophers are in the mix for the state's top high school recruit, 6-foot-4, 200-pound Cretin-Derham Hall junior wideout Michael Floyd. Still, don't be surprised if Floyd attends a June camp at defending national champion Florida, which the other day became the latest big-time program to offer him a tender. Co-defensive coordinator for Florida is former Notre Dame assistant Greg Mattison, who recruited several Cretin-Derham Hall players to the Irish.

Meanwhile, Notre Dame coach Charlie Weiss and recruiting coordinator Rob Ianello will make a return trip to Cretin-Derham Hall next month.

Nice that he is keeping it to the MidWest... Basically means Us vs ND.. given how we usually beat out those other 3 teams for the better recruits... Of course most say Floyd is a heavy ND lean.. so looking like a 2nd place finish here

Another one of Floyd's teammates committed to Minnesota today...ATH John Nance. He joins RB/DB Shady Salamon as members of the Cretin Derham Hall football team to commit to Minnesota. Minnesota has also offered Cretin Derham Hall standouts WR Michael Floyd and OL Joe Schafer.
