I usually don't buy into the whole "early contributor" stuff. Everyone thought Mitchell was going to come in and fix the problems at LB. He ended up red-shirting. So did Jalin Marshall who was going to light up the scoreboard out of the slot. Rarely does a freshman at a place like OSU have the kind of impact that a Joey Bosa did. That's because they are supposedly recruiting the best at their position year in and year out. Only the ones who are truly special and developed can come in and play here early.

Having said that...Johnnie Dixon is a guy I could see competing for early time. He is built like a stronger version of Santonio Holmes...or Antonio Brown. That's the kind of size that can allow a 5-11 guy to play on the outside. I know everyone is talking up Michael Thomas and more recently Corey Smith as guys who will step up big next year. I even compared Smith to Santonio last year...and I still think he is going to be a good one. But Dixon is a guy that if he doesn't see the field I think he will be pushing the guys in front of him hard. Freshman WRs usually just don't show up looking like this:

If he wants any chance at early PT, he's going to have to learn how to block majorly! Something that isn't done much in HS. In HS he just has to worry about outrunning everyone, and making the catch. Hell have to do that too in college, but our offense is predicated on the run first. Not saying he can't do it, and won't push for time, but I'd quell early PT talk until coaches think he can do that. I'm sure that's why jalin never saw the field. Hoping johnnie ends up in S&G, and gets some great coaching to make him a complete football player and WR

Scout National Recruiting Analyst & NFL Draft Analyst Jamie Newberg - "One thing I can say about Dixon tonight, he's a good blocker on the perimeter."

You might be right. But I disagree with a couple of things you said.

If you think blocking is the only reason why Jalin was redshirted you are mistaken.

If you think Dixon is highly thought of by the OSU staff because he was "outrunning anyone" you are even more mistaken.

Like I said, early PT is a rarity. I don't just throw that notion around. I think Dixon is the most complete WR Urbz has recruited at OSU. He has great hands, great body control, solid route running, and according to more than one scout tonight, the ability to block downfield well beyond his years.

For those of you hitting refresh, you can probably slow it down.

@jamienewberg

Per Dwyer coach Jack Daniels, 4-star Johnnie Dixon will not make his decision tonight. It will be later this week. #ohiostate #miami

Interesting development. me thinks the distance might still be a factor. hope not cuz kid is a baller.
