WR James Jackson (transfer to Wayne State)

That coach is a class act. He mentions fitting in some of what Ohio State does on offense during James's Sr year to help him transition to the college level a little easier. Seems like he knows and does whatever is best for his kids.

DFP: Out of the running

Out of the running

[...]

Jackson made news earlier this week when he committed to play football at Ohio State. And, believe it or not, he was able to do it without calling a news conference.

Imagine that.

"When this whole process started, I told him if he can keep being humble and be appreciative of everything, he'd be amazed at how many doors will open up for him," said Grand Ledge coach Matt Bird. "He's really taken it to heart and done a great job."

cont'd...

Should I be as excited for this pickup as I was when Ginn announced?

No...Not knocking Jackson, but while Jackson could put up good numbers here, end up a first round draft pick or what not, Teddy was one of the best athletes to ever step on the floor here...He made plays early in his career all the way through 3 years...Jackson won't have that quick impact, but his style of play will be similar, in that they are speed receivers, and Jackson can make guys miss...I would compare more to Ray Small, but a little faster...

I wouldn't say that anybody is "a lot" faster than Ray. Remember, when Saine ran his 9.38, Ray was just a step behind at 9.55.

We need to be careful annointing anyone as "the next TG II". It wouldn't be fair to anyone. We may not see another TG II in our lifetime. Seriously.

Having said that, I am really anxious to see what JJ can do with the ball in his hands - maybe returning kicks as a frosh?

If Jackson can make guys miss then I would say that he's definitely different than Teddy (I'm sure they're similar in many ways, like you said). That was one of the things that Ted didn't really do much of. He would run past you or around you, but didn't make you miss all that much. I'm glad to hear that cbf40.

I agree...Ted may very well have been a once in a lifetime athlete. And not to knock Ray Small, but even his own coach thought he could be a better receiver than TGII and that one has never materialized. Simply having the right tools doesn't guarantee a thing. But it sure would be nice to see this kid develop into that type of game breaker.

I realized today when watching James Jackson's rivals.com film that those highlights all came from ONE game. In that game he tallied the following:

85 yard kickoff return for a TD
35 yard direct snap for a TD
40 yard reception
20 yard reception
20 yard reception

Very impressive for one game.

He seemed to blow up in this game (200 all purpose yards) but only had 600 APY the rest of the year.

Was he injured this season and it lingered into the track season? I really wanted to see him break the 100 meter dash record in Michigan (10.54).
