WR Garrett Wilson (All B1G, 1st Team All American, 2022 OROY, New York Jets)

A Closer Look at Garrett Wilson’s Touchdown Catch

Ohio State freshman wide receiver Garrett Wilson had an outstanding spring for the Buckeyes.

In Saturday’s spring game, he caught four passes for 44 yards, which was a fine way to cap his total camp performance.

It was an 18-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter, however, that provided a glimpse of what Wilson’s teammates and coaches have seen from him since he arrived back in the winter.

On the touchdown, redshirt freshman quarterback Matthew Baldwin took the snap on first-and-10, made a token play fake to the running back, and then simply threw a jump ball toward the back of the end zone where Wilson and sophomore cornerback Sevyn Banks were about to be.

While Banks looked back and planted in order to jump for the ball, Wilson snuck in behind and waited until just the right moment to high-point the pass. The precision allowed Wilson to come down with the ball, giving the Scarlet one of their two touchdowns on the day.

Having played together at Lake Travis High School in Austin, Texas, this was probably the one thousandth time that Baldwin has thrown this exact pass to Wilson, and probably the 700th time it was successful.

In front of a crowd of over 60,000 Buckeye fans, Wilson and Baldwin were once again playing catch, just as they had done for years back at Lake Travis.

The-Ozone photographer Dan Harker was in the corner of the end zone to capture the touchdown, and you can see in the photographs below just how easy this play wasn’t.

Take a closer look at Saturday’s play of the game.

GARRETT WILSON, WIDE RECEIVER
Like Harrison, Wilson came to Ohio State and joined a deep and experienced position group at wide receiver. The Buckeyes lost a trio of senior starters in Parris Campbell, Terry McLaurin and Johnnie Dixon, but K.J. Hill, Austin Mack, Binjimen Victor and Chris Olave are ready to step into primary roles.

But Wilson enrolled early to take part in winter conditioning and spring practice, and that's where he showed he's ready for the next level. While admitting Wilson still has a lot of growing to do, Day spoke highly of him this offseason.

"[Wilson's] skill set is off the charts," Day said. "His ball skills, adjusting to the balls down the field, route running ability, length, as good as I've been around."

Wilson put all of that on display during Ohio State's spring game. He hauled in four catches for 44 yards that included a circus-catch touchdown over a leaping defender.

In Day's pass-happy offense, Wilson's numbers should be really impressive in 2019.

Over/under 2019 projection: 550 receiving yards, 5.5 touchdowns

Under for both.... 500/4. But I do think he has an instant impact for sure and has a very successful freshman campaign. As the season goes, it's going to be impossible to keep him off the field. He's only going to keep getting better with reps/experience. I also think there will be a re-commitment to the run w/ the RPO's and broken plays made w/ Field's legs so less passes to go around, even in Day's offense.

Morning Conversational: What Have Teammates Seen From Garrett Wilson?

Jaelen-Gill-Garrett-Wilson-Spring-Game-2019.jpg

Even though he enrolled early, Garrett Wilson’s repetutationstill preceded him at Ohio State.

Ranked the No. 2 wide receiver in the 2019 recruiting class, Wilson arrived at OSU with more expectations than most.

Essentially from his first day, however, he has done a great job of living up to those expectations.

The football season is still a long way off, of course, and living up to expectations any time before September is kind of like having a great batting practice — it looks nice, but has no effect on the scoreboard.

Still, you’d rather have a player looking good in the offseason than looking bad, and when it comes to Garrett Wilson, his teammates have liked what they’ve seen so far.

“I’ve seen a lot of growth from Garrett,” said senior receiver KJ Hill. “From the day he walked in and the offseason training to spring football. I feel like the main area he developed was as a person. He’s growing up already from a little boy to a man. And I feel like that’s why he’s making those plays. He’s humble, he’s soaking up everything in camp and learning. That’s all he wants to do is learn, and he’s coachable.”

Having rankings and accolades are nice in high school, but they can sometimes get you in trouble in college. If players believe their own hype, they will soon have their thoughts proven wrong.
