WR Garrett Wilson (All B1G, 1st Team All American, 2022 OROY, New York Jets)

“It wasn't something I was looking forward to. It was just whatever coach wanted me to do,” Wilson said on Tuesday. “Whatever's best for the team, I was able to do that.”

“I'm definitely excited to be in the slot, get a little bit more balls,” Wilson said.

“Being able to have that versatility, that's something I want to be able to bring to the table,” Wilson said.

This is another great example of the culture of this team. Compare quotes like this from current buckeyes and players coming back after opting out just shows how different the current state of programs between tOSU and ttun. Great time to be a Buckeye!

Garrett Wilson | WR | No. 5
Garrett Wilson had a pretty strong true-freshman season for the Buckeyes in 2019, going for 432 yards and 5 touchdowns on the campaign (fourth best on the team in both categories). But, with the departures of Binjimen Victor, Austin Mack, and especially K.J. Hill, Wilson is poised for a breakout season this fall.

The 6-foot wide receiver was a backup on the outside last season, but with Hill now playing for the Los Angeles Chargers, Ryan Day and Brian Hartline need a talented, sure-handed pass-catcher to play in the slot, and all indications seem to point to that being Wilson.

While Chris Olave led the Buckeyes in receiving yards last season by more than 200 (840 to Hill’s 636), it was Hill who led the team in receptions (57 to Olave’s 48). Olave and Jameson Williams (more on him next) will likely be the starting receivers on the outside (imo), and Wilson’s mix of consistency and explosion will have him occupying the middle of the field.

I am excited by what having a receiver of his talent and athleticism coming out of the slot can do for Fields. Wilson will require attention from opposing safeties over the middle, but should also be able to take advantage of the quick-hitting mesh routes that we have seen Buckeye QBs take advantage of in small doses in recent years as well. We don’t yet know if he has the durability and consistency of Hill, but we do know that he is even more dynamic, which is very, very intriguing.

It’s going to be an insanely difficult position for teams’ best corners to have to work against Wilson out of the slot. Which begs the question: do you put your best corner on Wilson or Olave?

Or if they really don't have a best (or shutdown) corner the question might be, which one do you double team?

And I think the answer (at least to start the season) will be Olave.

And im sure opposing DCs would love to leave Jameson Williams/Garrett Wilson/Julien Fleming, etc in a 1 on 1 match up

With Ohio State's OL, RBs, and a very mobile QB; I'm not sure opposing defensives can consistently stop Ohio State's running game even with 8 in the box. However, if they show 8 in the box, (depending the situation/matchups) Ohio State would likely audible to a pass (if it wasn't already called) and "take what the defensive gives you".

“Garrett’s just a great receiver all around,” Fields said. “I think being in the slot and him being able to work both outside and inside and him being able to go different directions I just think that makes him more dynamic. Him being in that slot definitely makes our team better and he’s definitely a great receiver.”

GARRETT WILSON TAKES OPENING HANDOFF 62 YARDS AND CHRIS OLAVE STUNTS ALL OVER PENN STATE

Garrett Wilson is a force. The sophomore led the team in receiving last week against Nebraska, and from the jump he's out there doing amazing things in Happy Valley against Penn State.

Two comments here:

Wow, he is really, really good. Would love to see Baldwin bring him with him.

It's amazing how things eventually work out. Maybe Wilson will just come to Ohio State and be a star, and Baldwin will end up transfering to TCU (and basically quit football due to repeated injuries).

Apparently "he's really, really good" at positions other than WR too. We could use another good CB right now, maybe Wilson could play both ways (i.e. like Chris Gamble did).....:boogie:
