WR Emeka Egbuka (All B1G, All-American)

BACK AT HIS BEST. When Emeka Egbuka turned a tunnel screen into a 68-yard touchdown, I tweeted that Egbuka – while running the 68 yards to score said touchdown – looked the fastest he had been in two seasons.

Egbuka, who recorded 74 catches for 1,151 yards and 10 touchdowns in 2022, suffered an ankle sprain in Ohio State’s win over Maryland last season. After missing the next three games (Purdue, Penn State and Wisconsin), Egbuka returned to the lineup for the final six regular-season games and the Cotton Bowl; however, he never looked like himself and ended 2023 with 41 receptions for 515 yards and four scores.

Following an offseason of recovery, rehab and rest, Egbuka has looked excellent to start the 2024 season, collecting 14 catches for 266 yards and one touchdown in Ohio State’s wins over Akron, Western Michigan and Marshall.

That’s a development Day has loved to see through four weeks.

“Emeka, when he first got here, you recognized that he was just a different mentality, a different personality. He’s got a look in his eye. He wants to be great. He’s a mature young man. He was like that the minute he got here,” Day said. “To see him play that sophomore year, he was very, very productive. He did a lot of things for us. He had the ankle last year, so you didn’t get a chance to see him at his best. But now, you’re starting to see him back at his best. A captain, a leader and a great player.”

Emeka Egbuka back at his best?

That oughta scare Big Ten defensive coordinators to death.

BIG BROTHER, LITTLE BROTHER. We’ve written… **checks notes** … like, mmmm, 10 articles about Jeremiah Smith’s performance in Ohio State’s Big Ten opener.

However, while those articles covered Smith’s pair of one-handed catches, his two touchdowns and his similarities to Alabama wide receiver Ryan Williams, this article and this section will cover a minor moment involving Smith on Saturday – the moment he stuck up for Emeka Egbuka.

With a little over a minute left in the first quarter, Will Howard motioned Egbuka parallel to the line of scrimmage. After Ohio State snapped the football, Egbuka turned the corner and pancaked Michigan State cornerback Ed Woods. The nature of the block led several Spartans to surround Egbuka and exchange words.

In a matter of moments, Smith arrived and tossed Egbuka out of the skirmish before chirping back at the defenders. His quick actions reminded me of Day’s comments on Big Noon Kickoff last week. The head coach said Egbuka and Smith share a close bond that has been special to witness over the past nine months.

"One of the reasons Emeka Egbuka decided to come back was to help Jeremiah Smith because he saw the talent. To me that's what's really cool about this team right now."

“It’s really easy to see the potential in Jeremiah. He’s got a guy like Emeka Egbuka – one of the reasons he decided to come back was to help Jeremiah Smith because he saw the talent,” Day said. “To me, that’s what’s really cool about this team right now.”

I agree. That is really cool.

Egbuka and Smith are brothers in The Brotherhood.

That bond matters and will matter as Ohio State continues to chase its goals this season.

In addition to the incident above, I noticed several instances where it looked like the MSU defenders were trying to get into Smith's head, to antagonize him and take him mentally out of the game. Instead, in the instance above and the other instances, Smith kept his cool, showing an amazing level of maturity and mental toughness not often seen in a true freshman. And through all that he stood up for his teammate Egbuka.

Jeremiah Smith is good, like amazingly, incredibly good. But I hope people don’t take Emeka for granted with how good he is and has been. A former #1 WR and top 10 overall in his class. He’s lived up to his ranking, especially since he’s top 3 in pretty much every WR category at OSU. And he could be the next 1st round WR. Let’s not overlook his greatness in focusing so much on what JJ is doing
