A bevy of choices awaited former NFL receiver Cris Carter in spring 2005.

Carter's son Duron, then an eighth-grader, inherited his father's athletic prowess.

Cris Carter scanned potential high schools, looking for the ideal fit for his son. After some analysis, the family settled upon St. Thomas Aquinas.

St. Thomas captures state championship
BY BOB EMANUEL JR.[email protected]
After three consecutive years of heartache and disappointment, the St. Thomas Aquinas sideline finally exalted Friday night.
Years of pent up frustration were released when the Raiders defeated Kissimmee Osceola 35-20 to capture the Class 5A state championship -- the school's first football title since 1999 and fourth overall in 11 finals appearances -- in front of 9,250 fans at the Citrus Bowl.

The Raiders needed just three plays before Becker found Duron Carter on a crossing route. Becker, who faked a handoff and rolled to his right, was hit as he released and threw off his back foot. Carter slowed down, cradled the pass, broke a tackle by Gerard Thomas and scored to complete the 51-yard play and put Aquinas back up by 15.

''Going across the middle, Becker hit me, and I made a play,'' Carter said, ``That's what I tried to do. I made it for my team.''

Carter caught a 12-yard pass from Becker for a 21-7 lead with 4:11 remaining in the first half, but Thomas broke several tackles and returned a punt 85 yards with 31 seconds remaining in the half to cut the deficit to 21-13.

St. Thomas' Carter makes his dad proud
By Dave Brousseau | South Florida Sun-Sentinel
December 15, 2007

Junior wide receiver Duron Carter, son of former NFL great Cris Carter, had the biggest game of his young career at St. Thomas Aquinas.

Carter made only two catches in the Class 5A state championship against Kissimmee Osceola on Friday, but both were touchdowns. The second, a 51-yard touchdown catch from quarterback Ryan Becker with 5:37 to play, clinched the Raiders' fourth state title.

"It's great," Carter said. "Me and my dad talk a lot and he tells me to strive to be great and that's what I'm trying to do. To be like him."

From the Miami Herald article...

''We're very, very good,'' Duron said. ``We don't have the star players that usually a lot of teams have. We have very good receivers.
We always do our job. I feel like we're one of the best blocking group of receivers. That's why we're doing so good running the ball.
We only have one senior starting right now.

``We're pretty good, and next year we'll be pretty good too.''
Duron caught a touchdown pass against Largo in the state semifinal and made a pivotal block on a touchdown run by Jeremiah Harden in the regional final.

The group, like most players in the program, understands the talent level is so high among their teammates that their overall numbers will suffer.
Players only get one or two chances to make a play during some games. Duron does not see that as a problem.

''It would be nice to get all those catches,'' he said. ``But still, winning is a big part of our team.

IN THE HUDDLE 2009: Duron Carter

While many people get to watch emerging stars in big events such as state championship games, FloridaFB.com is rarely surprised when it comes to seeing elite talent on display.

With our opportunity to see thousands of players in the course of a year, big time prospects like Duron Carter have been on our radar screen for well over a year. That?s why our IN THE HUDDLE segments introduce to you so many underclassmen so many can find out about all of the great talent on board in the Sunshine State.

Today, IN THE HUDDLE takes you to Broward County, where the 5A state champion Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas Raiders have enough talent to get back in the state title race for 2008.

IN THE HUDDLE
has taken you to practice sessions in Greensboro, pre-game workouts in Callahan, and camps and combines from Venice to the Fort Lauderdale area where Carter and his teammates have already shown that things will once again be fun for the 2008 season ? and beyond.

THE CARTER REPORT
NAME:
Duron Carter
SCHOOL:
St. Thomas Aquinas
CITY:
Fort Lauderdale
POSITION:
WR
HEIGHT:
6-2
WEIGHT:
165
40 TIME:
4.56 (Reported)
HEAD COACH:
George Smith

SCOUTING CARTER:
After watching him all of last year, in a reserve role, last spring was the time that Carter went from a potential prospect to a player who could be a true leader on the football field for one of the top teams in the state.

His ability to get open and find spots in the defensive secondary gave him an opportunity to make big plays. All he had to do was watch a number of his father?s tapes to see how the position should be played. Duron is doing a lot of what made his father such a premier receiver. He blocks as well as any young pass catcher around, and that?s exactly the thing that pushed his father toward Canton. In addition to his blocking skills, he also has tremendous hands and great concentration, Even his speed has improved over the past year, which is bad news to defenses who will have to cover this impressive athlete.

Another phase of his game that many are not familiar with is his ability to throw the ball. While receiver will be the position that will get him to the next level, you have to figure that having the option to throw the ball is also a great selling point.

Along with teammates Dwayne Difton and tight end Gabrison Holmes, the Raiders may have the best trio anywhere in the country for the 2008 season. Big time potential!

CARTER CREDITS:
Listed as a backup quarterback, this talented youngster actually came to St. Thomas as a young quarterback prospect who was a standout youth league passer/runner in West Boca Raton.

The son of future Hall of Fame receiver, Cris Carter, his performance in the 5A state championship game against Kissimmee Osceola opened some eyes across the country.

Cris Carter is also a coach for St. Thomas, but never once pushed his son into the spotlight. Duron arrived there with hard work and dedication.

WHAT THE COLLEGE RECRUITERS ARE SAYING:
"His size, body control, ability to catch and run and also block have put him on an early elite list for many schools to watch."

HIS BAGS ARE PACKED:
You have to figure that Ohio State would be the team to beat, since his father made such a splash with the Buckeyes and the family is from Ohio, but Florida has also been mentioned early on as well. His recruitment will be fun!
