WR Duron Carter (Official Thread)

All that being said, I agree somewhat with RB07. He seems to me like a good solid high 3 star, low 4 star type based on his talent alone. He doesn't have the physical ability of guys like Jheranie Boyd, Marlon Brown, etc. However, the thing that is hard to quantify is work ethic, and coachability. I get the impression that Duron has those things (with some clutchness too). Those things are hugely important and a huge reason why Robiskie is a much better player than a guy like Dukes who arguably had more physical talent but lacked the intangibles.

Being a legacy can be a real benefit because the coaches have a better idea of what they are getting as far as the intangibles.

Exactly...he is a good player no doubt and worthy of an offer, he just isn't a top 100 type of guy imo. That is not a huge deal because Jenkins, Gamble, Robiskie, and the list goes on of 3 star WR's that have turned up to be great players. Just at this point he isn't comparable to a Boyd, Brown, DuBose, Fields, Jackson, etc. I can see the good qualities (size, fluidity, work ethic, hands, good coaching, blocking, and doesn't have a system to showcase his talents), but also see areas he needs improvement in (ability to make a defender miss, acceleration off cuts, speed, and route running). Luckily he can improve on those and I think he has good upside. I just think he needs develop further athletically.

Btw (Oregon), I haven't read anything that indicates that Florida has offered? LSU, Auburn, and OSU are the big ones I've read. Still a good list, just saying. But yes, that is a poor video to judge on but I was just expecting more of a playmaker and technically sound WR...I saw a work in progress in technique (which is ok but just surprising) and no big plays, mostly a catch, followed up quickly by a tackle. Seems like he had enough seperation to make the catch, but not enough to get past his man. That's why I thought ESPN was way off in their eval when they said something to the effect of him picking up yards after the catch, which I didn't see much of. However, a big WR like Duron that blocks well goes quite nicely with playmakers like Fields and Jackson. So pros and cons.

St. Thomas receiving trio getting college attention

ANDREW ULOZA / FOR THE MIAMI HERALD St. Thomas receivers (from left) Gabe Holmes, Duron Carter, Philip Pierre-Louis and Dwayne Difton pose with assistant coach Cris Carter (center) last fall. Pierre-Louis has since graduated, meaning Difton should get more playing time.

St. Thomas Aquinas' talented receiving trio of Duron Carter, Dwayne Difton and Gabe Holmes have had the attention of college coaches for a while now.

The receivers known for their various skills set and physical tools have letters from college coaches piling their mailboxes.

As for the attention and respect of opponents, well, that might have finally come to fruition last December.

The Raiders were battling Kissimmee Osceola for the Class 5A state championship when Carter taught a Kowboys defensive back a lesson.

''In the 2007 state final someone was telling me that my dad [former NFL great Cris Carter] was good, but that I'm not,'' recalled Duron Carter, with a wide smile across his face. ``So then I went out and scored a touchdown on him. He didn't say anything after that anymore.''

St. Thomas rolled past Osceola 35-20 that day and claimed the 5A football crown.

For an encore performance, the Raiders will heavily rely on receivers Carter and Difton and tight end Holmes.

With Carter, the Raiders have the prototypical receiver.

A BIGGER FRAME

Carter has grown two inches and added 15 pounds from last season and is now 6-3, 185 pounds.

Besides his impressive frame, Carter also has great football instincts that in part can be attributed to having a future Hall of Famer for a father.

''It definitely helps us a lot,'' said Duron, of Cris, who helps out the Raiders receivers. ``Having the NFL experience he has out here coaching high school players definitely gives us an edge over our competition. It helps us excel to the college level having us know more information than others.''

Said Miami Herald recruiting analyst Larry Blustein: ``You figured that this one-time quarterback prospect would find himself at the position that will soon put his father, Cris, in the Hall of Fame. Tremendous football player who is getting better all the time.''

Carter has a long list of college suitors, among them: Florida, Auburn, Michigan, Ohio State, LSU, West Virginia, Wisconsin and South Florida.

Carter was second on the Raiders in receiving last season with 22 catches for 361 yards and eight touchdowns.

LARRY BLUSTEIN'S COMMENTS: You figured that this one-time quarterback prospect would find himself at the position that will soon put his father, Cris, in the Hall of Fame. Tremendous football player who is getting better all the time. While Ohio State will be tough to beat, schools such as Florida, Michigan and Auburn will be right there.

Carter is a 3* on Rivals and the 73rd ranked receiver. I couldn't disagree more with that ranking. I'm higher on him than most but even his toughest critics would probably disagree with that ranking. I guess he'll have to be Tressel's next 3* gem.

Remember his father wasn't rated very high after his first three years in the NFL while playing for Philadelphia since "All he could do was catch touchdown passes"; and he turned out to be a pretty good NFL player.

Re: Cris Carter
After leading the Eagles in touchdown receptions his third year, Carter was cut by head coach Buddy Ryan. When asked to explain his decision, Ryan -- in what became one of Chris Berman of ESPN?s favorite quotes -- answered, "All he does is catch touchdowns." Picked up off of waivers for $100 -- perhaps the greatest deal in the history of the NFL -- Carter went on to play in eight straight Pro Bowls with the Vikings. He made 1,101 catches in his career (second all-time) and 130 touchdowns (also second all time).

To be completely fair, Ryan later admitted that his statement was a pretext to cover for the real reason that he cut Carter - "off-the-field" issues, which have since been widely discussed by Cris himself. But none of this is really relevant to Duron.....
