WR Duron Carter (Official Thread)

Not saying Duron doesn't deserve an offer, but from what I've read from him on this site, I think I'll trust what RB says over half the yahoos over at ESPN.

And I'll trust Tressel over RB.

No offense, RB. :)

FWIW, I was impressed with his film. How many high school receivers do you see block like that? Route-running can always be worked on but you can't work on that intensity. He isn't a prima donna wide receiver. He's willing to get down and dirty to help the team win.

If he played in an offense like the one Dublin Coffman runs, he'd have A LOT more buzz. And to be honest, I like him more than Fields and Jackson as a receiver.

This probably belongs in another thread, but I think I need to clarify. My point was, after seeing ESPN's top prospect lists from last year and all of their Pryor "insider info" of him having Oregon and UM ahead of us, their opinion doesn't hold much weight with me at this point. I would definitely love to see Duron in S&G!

It's all a moot point of course, because Tressel does indeed trump all.

Back to Duron...

Well, their inside info on schools that lead for certain prospects doesn't have much to do with their ability to evaluate prospects. Now, I don't like Scouts Inc. either but I do know Duron was selected for their all-star game even though they could have just about any WR in the country as it is now the premiere high school all-star game. Duron was selected with the likes of Jehranie Boyd and Marlon Brown. That should tell you something.

Yeah, i think its great how he blocks to, he looks a awful lot like Hines Ward a guard at the reciever position that can catch!

Route running is among, if not the, least important attributes of a HS WR evaluation.

True but that wasn't the only downer I saw in his highlights. Routes can be taught of course but I just figured they would be more developed when his dad is Cris Carter...so just surprising.

On my evaluation...I knew I would be crucified for being slightly negative on a guy that will likely be a Buckeye soon, and a legacy recruit at that, but I'm just trying to be objective. I expected more from the film than what I saw. He does have nice upside and plays for a team that runs the ball a lot (I believe), and he has shown fairly well at combines, so his film isn't the end all and I don't think he isn't worthy of an offer...happy everyone? Btw Troy88, not in high school anymore and that isn't a very good evaluation imo...quoting ESPN doesn't improve legitmacy around here. They said quite a few things I disagree with in that evaluation. I concede Tressel and LSU are better than me (obviously I wouldn't claim to hold a candle to them), however, I am just saying he is a 3 star type guy to me at this point. If it wasn't for his name, I just wonder if he gets selected to play in any AA game? Or has the offers he does? I realize he is a good player but the film just didn't match up to me. Again, how he competes and performs in the AA game will tell a lot to me, since it will be tough to get much of a read on him from the system he plays in. In summary...it's my opinion, feel free to disagree

Just watched his video. He gets off the line quick, and generates good separation. The most important thing in "route running" is to get open, and he does a good job at that. And he has a fluid, effortless stride, so he's likely faster than he appears...he has more than adequate "field speed". Not a bad blocker for a WR, either.

C'mon, do you really think schools like Ohio St., LSU, Auburn, and Florida would burn a scholly on a guy just because he has a famous father? It helps his exposure, no question. But, there is no way he'd be getting these kinds of offers if he didn't have talent. There are numerous examples of famous offspring not making it in sports.

Obviously, you are entitled to your opinion but I'm not sure what you were expecting from his film given it's a run-oriented offense. Personally, I was hoping to see a physical receiver who could block and that's what I saw. There really isn't much opportunity to judge him as a pass-catching receiver just because it's such a small sample size. Switch Stoneburner or Posey with Carter and I doubt they are ranked in the top 5 in the country at their position by the recruiting services.

i dont mean to seem like im attacking you but when you say Duran is a low profile prospect when Ohio St., LSU, Auburn, and Florida want him is just a stupid thing to say considering most of the NFL's talent comes from those schools. Im is full agreement with OreganBuckeye.

I think that some guys are more a fan of gamebreaking speed recievers over big bodied slower ones. Since we already have a speed guy in James Jackson I believe that is why we are more likely to go aftera guy like Duron. Because of his great hands, big body, and blocking skills he probably deserves a 4* ranking but depending on what you value in a WR recruit it could be 3* or even 5*.

I haven't really watched any film of Duron recently but I remember following his playoff performances last year and saw some highlights. The thing that stood out to me was his confidence and you could kind of tell that he was growing into the go-to role for his team. For an underclassman to do that on a team as talented as Aquinas says a lot.

From what I've seen of him, I think the best comparison in recent Buckeye history is Brian Robiskie. He's a big kid with great hands and, like Robiskie, he should grow into his size more and be able to put on good weight and in doing so could actually get a little faster. I think he'll be a good player for us.

All that being said, I agree somewhat with RB07. He seems to me like a good solid high 3 star, low 4 star type based on his talent alone. He doesn't have the physical ability of guys like Jheranie Boyd, Marlon Brown, etc. However, the thing that is hard to quantify is work ethic, and coachability. I get the impression that Duron has those things (with some clutchness too). Those things are hugely important and a huge reason why Robiskie is a much better player than a guy like Dukes who arguably had more physical talent but lacked the intangibles.

Being a legacy can be a real benefit because the coaches have a better idea of what they are getting as far as the intangibles.

Kudos to krazeyk & tlinc for doing an excellent job of helping to clarify RBO's views.

Doesn't anyone else find it a bit amusing that the criticisms of Duron are pretty similar to the ones that people said about his old man during Cris's NFL career?
