Devin Smith
High school: Massillon (Ohio) Washington
Height/weight: 6-2/180
40 time: 4.41

A perennial Ohio high school football powerhouse, Massillon Washington has a well established track record for being one of the top talent producers in the Buckeye State. Michigan has successfully harvested a few of the program's best prospects in recent years, landing linebacker Shawn Crable in 2003 and five-star defensive back J.T. Turner in 2009. Now they're back on the prowl for yet another Washington standout, receiver Devin Smith.

Ranked the No. 39 pass-catcher in the country by Scout.com, Smith amassed 1,013 all-purpose yards and 15 touchdowns as junior, en route to being named to the All-Ohio first team.

"Smith shows all the things you want from a young receiver projected to become a big-time player," said Scout.com Ohio analyst Dave Berk. "It's the deep routes where Smith can really excel, as he's got the quickness to elude and accelerate with a burst to separate from a defender and release deep."

Smith's big-play ability has netted him 16 scholarship offers to date, and more could be on the way based on the feedback he is getting from coaches.

"Most of the college coaches have told me they like the way I come off the ball, the way I use my explosiveness and quickness," he told Scout.com. "My route running is pretty good. Most of all, the way I attack the football in the air (is really good). I make sure that thing is mine and only mine. I'll fight any defensive back for the football."

Smith said he's received offers recently from Wisconsin, Illinois and Pitt.

"(Notre Dame) came through a few times at school and said they were real interested in me," Smith said. "They're still up there (high on his list). (Michigan) is up there. Michigan State, Cincinnati -- I also like Illinois and West Virginia. But that is in no order."

Michigan is among the programs in line to receive a visit from the three-star wideout, thanks in part their decision to prioritize him early in his recruitment. In addition, J.T. Turner has done his part to convey the strong interest in the Maize and Blue.

"He's real cool," Smith said of Turner. "We communicate every now and then. He told me that some of the guys there were talking about me. They want me to stop through, and that's one of my goals is to make it down (to Michigan) this summer."

That and other visits will move Smith closer to establishing a pecking order, and then ultimately a decision.

"Right now I'm just trying to find out which schools really want me," Smith told Scout.com. "At least by this summer I'd like to have a top five or seven just so I can concentrate of those schools and get more information, so I can decide where to take my officials. Then I can make my decision from there."

Massillon's Devin Smith wins the title in the long jump at the Division I state track and field championships at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in Columbus on Saturday. Smith is the first Tiger boy to win a state track title in 26 years.

COLUMBUS ? Slapping his hands together as he shouted out ?Yes,? Devin Smith savored a state championship Saturday afternoon.

?I am stoked right now,? Smith said.

Less than four hours later ? his face hidden in his jersey as he crouched down in disappointment ? the Massillon junior found out how fleeting that feeling can be at the high school state track and field championships.

From unforgiving weather to an injury to just running out of gas, Stark County athletes found out Saturday just how hard it is to walk away with a Division I state title.

Smith celebrated his in the long jump before feeling the pain of coming up short in the high jump at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.

Smith put everything into his final jump of the season to pull out his state title and soar into the Massillon record books. He became the first Tiger boy to win a state title in 26 years, unleashing his best jump ? a school-record 23-4 1/2 ? on his final attempt.

?You?ve got to wait for your last jump to do that?? Massillon head coach Jamey Palma joked.

Smith needed to summon his best at the end when Lewis Center?s Josh Perry moved ahead of Smith late in the competition.

?He had me nervous when he passed me,? Smith said. ?My coach and father told me to just relax and do your thing. Then I really let it all out on that last one.?

The win left Smith humbled.

?I?m very happy and I?m very proud,? Smith said. ?It feels real good to accomplish this. I wanted to come out here and bring my ?A? game and I did that.?

Devin Smith hoping to get the word
By TIM MAY

Devin Smith was trying to turn heads, Jim Tressel?s in particular, when he took part in Ohio State?s advanced summer camp for rising high school seniors and some juniors today at the Les Wexner Football Complex.
The senior-to-be wide receiver from Massillon, Ohio, did gain the endorsement of blue-chip quarterback Braxton Miller, the leader of the Buckeyes? 2011 recruiting class. But Smith, who already holds scholarship offers from Notre Dame, Penn State, West Virginia, Cincinnati and a load of other schools, was hoping his performance at the camp would merit an offer from Tressel and the Buckeyes, too, whose 2011 class already stands at 14 names.

Recruiting rules kept Tressel or his staff from making an offer on the spot, but Smith was hoping one might come in the next day or so. Though the camp attracted quite a few of the players already committed to the OSU class, including defensive ends Kenny Hayes and Steve Miller, Smith appeared to be the only non-offered prospect in attendance who might pick up one from the Buckeyes in the near future.

?They said they?re planning on signing two or three receivers,? Smith said. ?Evan Spencer (of Vernon Hills, Ill.) obviously committed already. And they?re looking at me and another guy. So I am looking forward to seeing what happens the next couple of days.?

And if the Buckeyes were to offer?

?I feel this is the place to be, and it fits just right for me,? Smith said. ?I?ve been down here a few times. I?ve been to three of their games. So I know what the atmosphere is like.

?So I?d talk it over with my family and make a decision then.?

Does this thread hold the record for the most updates without a single opinion given? Especially since he's an extremely talented in-state kid with a very impressive list of offers who is DETERMINED to earn a buckeye offer. Track star, strong, fast, has made no bones about being 100% buckeye.. lots to like about this kid.

Anyone think he gets an offer? Are we taking 2 more WRs this year (in addition to spencer)? Space sure is limited, but I hope he earns his offer. Seems to have a great work ethic and I love his loyalty.
