WR Devin Smith (National Champion)

Smith Eager to Make Instant Impact
By Brandon Castel

COLUMBUS, Ohio ? With his team trailing 7-0 in the first quarter of the North-South All-Star Classic, Devin Smith knew he needed to make a play.

The North squad had struggled to move the football against the South defense?something that would continue the rest of the day?but for one perfect moment, Smith was the best player on the field.

With Northwestern-bound cornerback Nick Vanhoose playing the underneath coverage, Smith went over the top on a post route to snag a 26-yard touchdown pass. As his feet hit the Turf in the North end zone at Ohio Stadium, Smith was transplanted to another place in time.

?When I looked down and saw the Ohio State logo under me and felt the ball in my hands it was overwhelming,? the receiver out of Massillon Washington said.

?I looked up, and even though the stands were almost empty, I could see 105,000 fans in their seats. I felt like a Buckeye.?

Massillon?s Devin Smith clears 7-feet, 1⁄2 inch to break the meet and Stark County record Saturday at the Jason Manse Crusader Relays at Central Catholic.

PERRY TWP. ?

There must be something about competing at Central Catholic High School that brings out the best in Massillon?s high jumpers.

One year after Jamil Dudley set a Stark County record in the high jump, Massillon?s Devin Smith bettered his former teammate?s mark by less than an inch at Saturday?s Jason Manse Crusader Relays.

Smith cleared 7-feet, 1⁄2-inch on his first attempt, besting Dudley?s leap of 7-feet, 1⁄8-inch, to help the Massillon boys win the team title. The Tigers finished with 130 points to outdistance second-place Central Catholic (94 points). Perry?s ?B? team was sixth with 36 points. On the girls side, St. Vincent-St. Mary took first with 121 points, with Central Catholic placing second with 94 points. Massillon was fifth with 66 points.

The jump was the culmination of a near-perfect day for Smith, who opened at 6-0 and cleared every height on his first attempt. He later missed three tries at 7-1.

?If my records are correct, then Devin is now the Stark County record holder,? Massillon boys coach Klifton Scott said. ?I knew he was capable of something like this, but getting there (Saturday) was a little quicker than I might have anticipated.

?We gave him a lot of rest after Tuesday?s meet because we wanted to see how he performed with fresh legs. We think it paid off.?

Smith?s previous best was 6-10 last season, as he and Dudley eventually finished tied for fourth in the event at the state meet. Given the often miserable weather conditions this spring, his best effort this season was 6-8.

The record jump was part of a stellar day for Smith, who combined with his younger brother Damion Smith to win the high jump competition. Damion Smith cleared a personal-best 6-5. The two also joined forces to win the long jump relay, while Devin Smith captured the 100-meter dash. Gareon Conley, Justin Blake and Justin Olack joined Devin Smith to win the 800 relay, while the Tigers were also victorious in the 800 sprint medley relay and 400 relay and the distance medley relay. Massillon?s Matt Mutigli, Ryan Lewis, Jordan Toles and Keith Murutes also combined to win the distance medley relay.

PERRY TWP. —

Massillon senior Devin Smith set a new county record in the high jump during the Jason Manse Crusader Relays on Saturday at Central Catholic High School.

Smith had a jump of 7 feet, 1⁄2 inch, eclipsing former teammate Jamil Dudley’s jump of 7-1⁄8 inch last year at the same event. Smith’s jump led the Tigers to a win in the event. Massillon’s high jumpers finished with a total of 13-51⁄2 to take first place.

Smith has had his eye on the county record for a while.

“This has been our goal,” Massillon boys head coach Klifton Scott said. “He let me know last year he wanted the record.”

Smith made the jump despite not having ideal conditions.

“When the meet started, it was rainy and cold,” Scott said. “They were jumping on a wet surface, but he found a way. The surface didn’t appear to play a role. He had no misses.”

The battle against the elements has been a season-long struggle.

“Devin’s best jump before that this year was 6-8,” Scott said. “The weather has played a factor. We’ve been playing it safe. For him to come out and make that jump was totally unexpected.”

Smith and the Tigers seem poised to put on a strong performance at the district meet.

“He has been focusing on the high jump, long jump and 100,” Scott said. “He is looking pretty strong. Devin is ready for districts. The team is ready for districts. We are fired up and ready to perform.”

Massillon?s Devin Smith clears the bar at 6-foot-8 during the Division I district meet at Hoover High on Friday to win the event. Smith also came in first in the long jump and 100-meter dash to advance to regionals in those events. The Tigers placed fourth as a team.

While the Massillon boys were fourth in the standings, they had one of the better all-around individual efforts thanks to standout senior Devin Smith. Smith qualified for next week?s regional meet at Austintown in three individual events, as he took first in the high jump, long jump and 100-meter dash. Smith cleared 6-foot-8 in the high jump, recorded a leap of 23-5 in the long jump and clocked a 10.63 in the 100.

Smith will have some company next week, including his younger brother, Damion, who cleared 6-4 in the high jump to place third. The top four finishers in each event secure a berth at the regional meet.

Massillon’s Devin Smith, who recently set a county record with a 7-foot, 1⁄2-inch high jump, ran a blistering 10.63 to win the 100 meters by more than half a second.

Smith advanced to regionals as a triple winner, having also reigned by wide margins in the high jump and long jump.

His 10.63 in the 100 turned the most heads. Consider the fact then-Warren Harding senior DeAver Williamson won the 2010 state 100 championship in 10.64.

Massillon?s Devin Smith comes in for a landing during the Division I regional long jump at Fitch. Smith, who is the defending state champion in the event, will return to state after winning the regional title Wednesday.

Massillon senior Devin Smith won the Division I regional long jump title Wednesday at Fitch High School?s Falcon Stadium.

Smith, the defending state champion in the long jump, won with a leap of 22-feet-11 3/4 to secure his spot at next weekend?s state meet. He only needed a top four finish to get back to state, but Smith didn?t want to arrive in Columbus as anything less than a regional champ.

?All year long, I haven?t got beat yet,? he said. ?My goal was to keep winning. I want to keep winning until I go to state and stand on that (championship) podium like I did last year.?

Smith said he heads to state still looking for improvement.

?I had a little trouble hitting the board,? he said. ?It?s been like that all year. That?s the thing I?m really going to focus on in practice, hitting that board and being consistent.?

Smith also ran a 10.67 in the 100-meter prelims, the fastest qualifying time Wednesday. That makes him the top seed for Friday?s finals. Smith also will look to win a regional high jump championship Friday.

Massillon?s Devin Smith pumps his fist after clearing 7-feet, 1/2-inches Saturday in the high jump at the Jason Manse Crusader Relays at Central Catholic High School. Smith and the Tigers begin district competition today at Hoover High School.

AUSTINTOWN ?

Massillon's Devin Smith added a couple more records to his resume Friday at the Division I track and field regional meet at Austintown Fitch High School.

Smith, a senior, began the day by blazing to a victory in the 100-meter dash in 10.56 seconds, breaking the old regional mark of 10.6 seconds, set in 1988 by three runners. The time was also a new Stark County record.

He followed that performance in the field by clearing 7 feet in the high jump. The height bested the previous regional record of 6-10.25 set in 1999 by Wadsworth's Jeffrey Cervery. Smith cleared 7-0.50 earlier in the season to set the county mark.

Smith also won the regional long jump title on Wednesday. He is the reigning state champion in that event.

Massillon's Devin Smith won the 100 yard run and the high jump at the 2011 DI Regional Track Meet at Austintown and in the process set two meet records.

AUSTINTOWN ?

One thing can top Devin Smith?s two days at the Austintown Division I regional track and field meet.

The Washington High School senior may experience it real soon.

Smith booked two more state berths Friday at Falcon Stadium. He set county, regional and stadium records in winning the 100-meter dash in 10.56 seconds. Later, he won the high jump, clearing a meet and stadium-record 7-feet.

The record-setting day puts Smith in position to win three state titles next week. He won Wednesday?s long jump and is the defending state champion.

?That?s my goal,? Smith said of winning three state titles. ?I want to get some state records. My goal is to work hard, get it in and hopefully, get the results.?

Smith?s 100 time broke the county record of 10.58 set by Jackson?s Carlin Isles in 2008. The regional record of 10.6 stood for 23 years.

?I just wanted to run a good race and get to state,? Smith said.

?I felt good coming out of the blocks. I turned on the jets and finished the run hard.?

Smith?s 10.56 is the top 100 time in the state this season.

?I think I can go faster than that,? he said. ?These guys here are pushing me to do that.?

Smith?s high jump challengers did as well.

Copley?s Roosevelt Dotson cleared 6-9, one inch higher than Smith?s district winning jump last week. However, Smith hit a title winning 6-10 on his final attempt and cleared 7-feet on his first try.

?Setting the record at the regional meet is a big honor,? Smith said. ?I?m very proud of myself and I congratulate all the competition out here.?

Devin Smith eclipses records in 100 meters, high jump at regional

AUSTINTOWN: Massillon's Devin Smith, a dual threat in the 100 meters and high jump, went into the finals of the Division I Northeast Ohio Regional Track and Field Meet looking for a good day.

He got a great one instead.

Smith, a 6-foot-3, 190-pound senior who starred on the Massillon football team and will attend Ohio State University this fall, set meet records in both events at Austintown Fitch High School.

The first ? in the 100 meters ? came early as he bolted just ahead of Solon's Khoury Crenshaw to finish the race in 10.56 seconds, beating the record by four one-hundredths of a second.

''I just wanted to run a good race,'' Smith said.

But he wasn't finished.

In the high jump, he faced a tough battle with Copley's Roosevelt Dotson.

After Smith and Dotson both cleared 6 feet, 6 inches, the pressure mounted.

When Dotson missed 6 feet, 8 inches by just a hair, Smith knew he had an opening.

''I was [nervous] at first,'' he said. ''I had to stay strong to myself.''

After Dotson's miss, Smith cleared the necessary height to take the event, but he wasn't done.

He came into the meet thinking about setting records and here was a second one in front of him for the taking.

He'd cleared 7 feet in practice before. He took on the challenge and made that his mark. Moments later, he cleared the bar, successfully beating the Region I mark by 1.75 inches.

''Setting the record here, at regionals, is a big honor,'' he said.

we could be watching a state champ in 3 events....that has never been done in the same year.

yes, the combo of Long jump/high jump you see a lot but, a 100 meter runner with those two winning is nuts. Its usually a 400/800 runner with those two. Other kids do that but, they might only win against another team not teams/districts/regionals or state  He's still from Akron .
