2006: THE YEAR IN REVIEW
Year's best story is about the future: Sanzenbacher, Buford to be Buckeyes

By STEVE JUNGA
BLADE SPORTS WRITER

Although 2006 paled in comparison to 2005 in terms of success on the state level, there were still plenty of memorable events involving local players, coaches and teams from the high school sports scene over the past 365 days.

Continued...

Note the question mark next to the Mr. Football highlight; this may be a typo or placed as a comment by the Blade sports writer. The Piqua Indians and Brandon Saine may have won the Div II State Title and Mr. Football, but Toledo Central Catholic and Dane Sanzenbacher won our hearts and other accolades over the past two years with their impressive show.

OSU is gaining some very good athletes, in Sanzenbacher, Buford and Saine. Toledo area sport fans have much to follow and be proud of in the next 4 years as we watch these guys excel in their sports.

:oh: Go Bucks!:io:

Dane in Orlando this Weekend

By now everyone must know I'm a huge Dane Sanzenbacher fan. Just for grins I did a quick comparison of his Junior Stats vs the WR's playing this weekend. His reception yards were more than twice the other WR's playing on both the East and the West. I don't have access to Rivals, but I would be interested in seeing what their Senior years stats looked like. Dane was a very productive receiver in HS and now he's a Buckeye!

Dane's receptions

I'd put his 61 receptions for 1,079 yards and 11 touchdowns up against just about anyone...

As a Senior he was down a little because of double coverage most of the season. As a Junior, his 71 receptions, 13 TDs, and 1424 yards were outstanding all the way the State Champs Game at Paul Brown Stadium.

Some say his size is an issue. He's a huge player by his numbers. He plays with his head and his heart.

VL said it best: "You've got to be smart to be number one in any business. But more importantly, you've got to play with your heart, with every fiber of your body. If you're lucky enough to find a guy with a lot of head and a lot of heart, he's never going to come off the field second..."

West beats East 35 to 24

Dane touched the ball 3 times and caught everything they threw at him. He had 3 catches for about 30 yards. The announcer mentioned Dane was going the OSU and how he looked a lot like Gonzo when he caught the ball and ran. I sat with his Dane's Dad and family at Sidelines, a local sport bar to watch his son in action and needless to say his Dad was very proud. One of the TCC coaches was there too along with about 30 of his fans and family.

The West seemed to have a better QB and they did a lot of running in the first half, the East QB on Danes team got sacked a lot and Dane didn't get as much thrown his way.

It was good to see him Live and on TV, I can't wait to see him Live on Saturdays in the next few years.

Go Bucks!

Dane like Gonzo

He sounds like he's technically sound like Gonzalez and has some serious wheels despite his 40 time.

In the three receptions I saw today, Dane solidly catches the ball and then sprints upfield. I saw a couple of other WRs today trying the run before they caught the ball. I know his 40 time was listed as 4.6, but I've seen him beat every defender and blow past a few HS stars today. I think Rivals has his 40 time as 4.45, so who knows? The kid's a player and you can't take that away from him.

Add to that fact that Gonzo wasn't our attention grabber, and I believe he has done exceptionally well. Not just in his role, but in every aspect you could dream of for a recruit. I believe after having Gonzo blow up for us, you can expect that we have some idea of how to use Dane... great pickup.

Comparing Dane to Gonzo

I heard a Dane fan today say the only difference between Dane and Gonzo was that Dane has hair. Of course we were at a sports bar and beer had been consumed. I said maybe Dane should shave his head. Or, Gonzo grow some. Either way, Dane will have a great mentor in Gonzo and he won't disappoint his fans. Brandon Saine will get a lot of attention at first and Dane like Gonzo will come through in a clutch just like he did in HS.

Camparisons and Contrasts

But I LOVE the comparisons.

It was after my bucket of beers that I heard his Dad say, "they do seem to have a lot in common, Gonzo has a "Z" in his last name too". I ordered another round as I watched his Dad smile with pride. Football is FUN!!!

Going to movie now. Later.
