In terms of ability it will usually come down to size, speed, blocking, and ability to get open. A smaller guy is usually a better slot, b/c he isnt looked at to stretch the field, but to use his small stature and find a hole and sit, also to cause mismatches against linebackers.. Splits and flankers are pretty interchangable, but it in an offense like ours it will depend on who the deep threat is and who the better blocker is.

Funny how Bill Conley has pretty much the same opinion about Dane that I shared. Its really sad that if someone doesnt toe the "company line" they are negative... Its called having a different opinion. Its called being open minded. As I originally said, its great for the young man, I HOPE he succeeds and I wish him no ill will. Questioning the early offer is a LEGITIMATE question.

Particularly when a guy who was regarded NATIONALLY as good as there was as a recruiting coordinator. Id say his opinion is better than anyone posting messages here on this board.... In his opinion Dane is athletically limited Conley SPECIFICALLY mentioned the same thing I did.... the offers.

Conley would never say a kid was a reach he caught some real flack a year or two ago for speaking the truth about what he believed and now his statements are much more subdued. Conley didnt call him a reach but its pretty clear that is what he is thinking.

Is Bill Conley perfect in his assesment of talent? Nope, no one is. Is he better than you or anyone else posting on this message board? Your a fool if you think otherwise.....

Id say that if you have read Conleys commments on this young man they address the very concerns I brought up. Again, I wish Dane all the success at OSU. I hope he grows and improves as a player and most importantly that he improves as a human being. I have no doubts that under the guidance of Jim Tressel and his staff both of these things will happen.

That said, I stand by my original statements. Based upon his measurables and his offers, I think this guy getting an offer in early July seems like a reach to me and I am apparently not the only person who thinks that.

Conley was wrong on Hawk.... Gosh I guess that makes him wrong on every recruit....

I notice you DIDNT take exception to the veiw that Conley was widely considered to be the VERY BEST recruiting coordinator in the country for SEVERAL YEARS while he was MEMBER OF THE OSU STAFF...

Frankly, your arguement holds little water....


Again, I wish him no ill will... I just question the early offer. IMO he is a project kind of player. In that sense, offering in early July is a reach. If Im wrong I will GLADLY eat my crow.

Bill Conley? Here we go again. Who was he regarded as THE BEST by? Buckeye FANS? He gave himself too much credit for the talent we brought in. Not that he wasn't a big part of it. But recruiting is a team effort. And seldom if EVER do recruiting coordinators have the last say. Recruiting coordinator is a title. The responsibility is to coordinate the recruiting efforts. Bill certainly had more input in the evaluation of all the recruits than many other recruiting coordinators do but the perception of him being some guru is a bit skewed. So now he can throw out evaluations without doing the work? The work he did when that's what he did for a living. He doesn't do that for a living anymore.

As far as NOW goes, when Bill watches film and goes to games he can provide his evaluations and they will have validity. Until then, they mean little to nothing. It can't be any more simple than that. Last year he specifically questioned the speed of several of our recruits. EVERY single one of them proved him wrong with track times or spring performance this past spring, at least to this point. In fairness, the jury would still be out as to how these players will pan out. But you get my point.

Unfortunately, I have not seen any film so I cannot provide any evaluation. I DO know how our coaches operate though and if they felt strong enough to offer Dane, knowing full well that they would in all likelihood get a commitment and a quick one. He would have to look pretty damn good to them.:wink2:

Personally, I spend little time getting excited about possibilities of this player or that player commiting or when they might do so. All I care about is the commitments we DO get. If we accept a commitment from a player I'm excited about that player, trusting our staffs ability to identify the kids that will help us compete for NC's. JT has been here long enough now that he is filling in pieces to HIS puzzle. Not just going after *****'s. That doesn't mean he sacrifices talent in any way shape or form. Quite the contrary. He IS however looking for the right fits to go along with what we already have. He also looks for personalities that are more likely to be able to fulfill HIS expectations both physically and mentally. Not an easy task. You can be sure of that. But something he's certainly proven to be very adept at.

Camp offers are always my favorite. It means that they liked the player enough to offer them on the spot. That really shows how highly though of Dane is by the staff. You do realize we didn't offer Sukay or Clemmons and we probably would have had a shot at Sukay? And we still haven't offered Washington, who we have a great shot at and we have seen in person as well. To pass on talents like that means the staff has a specific plan on who they want and Dane was that guy. Dane also plays in what D3 or D4? It's very easy to go under the radar like that and sometimes those types of players have to go to camps for offers and that's exactly what he did. I am very excited what Saz brings to the table.
