WR Dane Sanzenbacher (Official Thread)

Uncharacteristic quote for Jalil. Most likely he was caught up in the moment and said that out of pure emotion. The Titans will be ready to play on Friday. I'm sure Coach Pearson will make sure they don't overlook this game or go into it with too much confidence. Should be a good one. Good luck.
Go Titans!

As for the 6 D-1 recruits, that is not completely true, however there are at least 3 that I have heard about. OL Ben Burkett has been looked at by many MAC schools and Big 10 schools as well. The SJJ punter is being looked at by Northwestern and Patterson is being considered by some D-1 schools as well.

I figured as much for SeanPat and Burkett. I wasn't positive about the Claus.. if that's who you mean. Jalil really has no room to be making statements like that when they had just beat up on a Knight squad that's lack of talent is pretty apparent. Maybe if they had only lost to DeSales; They are a tough school, Whitmer on the other hand was more talk than talent. I really don't see this one being close.. I can't wait to see the Blade writers' predictions on how bad SJJ will beat us. I don't even see it being as close the more realistic predictions think.. Irish Roll.. Make it 23 Strait.. 38-10.

P.S. I hope we end up with Southview first round. I have a bunch of friends/family in Sylvania that think Southview is on the same level as Central. I'd love it if they could finally see otherwise.

P.P.S.. Tom Cole is so dumb haha.. The Groundhog. Wow.

Brandon Saine vs Dane Sanzenbacher

Daner will step it up a notch if we play Piqua. :osu: Saine is very fast but the Irish D has a few surprises yet. Piqua has lost one or two I think so they are vulnerable. :osu: Dane ran against him last spring and Saine won the 100, 200 and 400 m if I recall. It takes a team to win a game and more than one burner, CCHS is a team that will not be denied.

Sean Patterson 13 - CCHS 7

CCHS played a tough game tonight but came up short. Patterson used his running ability to beat the Irish. The weather was terrible and the Irish tried to put together a late drive but fell short. The Irish defense was awesome against the run and pass. Sean P beat us with his feet. Dane Sanzenbacher got our only score for the Irish and had trouble with a wet football on a few missed completions. Spiderman wouldn't have caught some of those balls

At the end when the clock ran out, I heard the Johnies student cheering section chanting "over-rated, over-rated". I suppose they could have been talking about their team because the Fighting Irish" have been No. 1 all season and are the defending D II State Champs. They earned that title and in my book the respect of every would be team that came along trying to get a piece of them. CCHS has the playoffs ahead and more tough opponents, you don't get to that level of play being "over-rated". Good luck St. Johns - you're going to need it.

You're going to need more than Patterson's legs to get past the first round.

PS. Andrew S is still a jack ass

Titans close door on Irish streak

By STEVE JUNGA
BLADE SPORTS WRITER

The Streak is over.
Defending Division II state champion Central Catholic took a 22-game winning streak into last night's regular-season finale against St. John's Jesuit at a rain-drenched Glass Bowl. The top-ranked Fighting Irish (9-1, 6-1) may have still walked away with their second straight City League championship, but it was the Titans (8-2, 6-1) who rolled out on Cloud Nine with a 13-7 victory that ended the longest winning streak in CL football history. "I remembered how bad losing feels real quick," Central coach Greg Dempsey said. "We did not want the streak to end and it did. Now we have to start a new streak. "Our kids have had a great regular season. To be wearing that target every week and come out like they have every week, you can't say anything bad about them. This game doesn't take anything away from what they accomplished."

Central had already secured the CL crown under the league's point system and clinched a first-round home playoff game in D-II. The win was a reprieve for the Titans, who were preseason favorites to win the CL crown. Two weeks earlier they had watched 19-7 fourth-quarter lead dissolve into a 27-19 loss at Whitmer. But, after blanking arch-rival St. Francis de Sales 45-0 here last week, and toppling Central, St. John's managed to crack the Division I playoff field for the fourth time in five years.

"Our kids came up big tonight," Titans coach Doug Pearson said. "I can't say enough about that. We're very excited to be going back to the Division I playoffs. I don't care who we play. We're in. That's the main thing. "We could have easily folded our tents two weeks ago, but we didn't. The staff and players worked very hard." Senior quarterback Sean Patterson, a third-year starter for the Titans, scored what proved to be the game-winning points when he rolled 15 yards untouched around end for a touchdown at 2:27 into the fourth quarter for a 13-0 lead. The Irish refused to roll over, however, answering immediately with an impressive seven-play, 72-yard drive that culminated with Tyler Kleeberger's 14-yard TD strike over the middle to reigning CL player of the year Dane Sanzenbacher (five receptions, 44 yards) with 7:07 remaining. Central would actually have three more cracks at extending its streak to 23 games. But, tight end Chris Dominiak's fourth-down pass on a fake punt play fell incomplete on the first drive. The second one ended with Sanzenbacher throwing incomplete on fourth down after Kleeberger was sidelined by a hard tackle. And, after St. John's back Nick Cherry lost a fumble with just 41 seconds to play, Kleeberger's (11-of-23, 130 yards, 2 INT) final pass was tipped near the line and then picked off by Ryan Ball with 32 seconds left. "At the end it started getting tense, but our defense played great all night," Patterson said. "This was a great team win. [Central] didn't win 22 games in a row for nothing. They're a great team, and we knew after we scored they were coming back with some fire." Patterson ran 15 times for 110 yards, and was 6-of-12 passing for 32 yards. St. John's topped Central in total offense 218-177. The Titans' most valuable player might have been senior punter/receiver Bill Claus, whose long kicks kept Central in poor field position most of the game on this rainy and windy night. Claus punted six times for a 46.5-yard average, including a 59-yarder downed at the Central 1 which set up St. John's first TD. That came when Patterson capped the ensuing 33-yard drive by hitting Claus for a 16-yard TD just 19 seconds before halftime. "We had a good week of practice and it showed on the field tonight," Claus said.

FOOTBALL: CAN THEY REPEAT?
Sidelines: Piqua is the first obstacle for Irish

By STEVE JUNGA
BLADE SPORTS WRITER

When the Ohio high school football playoffs kick off tomorrow and Saturday around the state, five of the six state champions from 2005 will begin defense of their titles.

That list includes Division II champion Central Catholic from the City League and Division V winner Patrick Henry from the Northwest Ohio Athletic League.

The fourth-ranked Fighting Irish (9-1), who repeated as City League champions, and the Patriots (8-2), who took a share of their fifth straight NWOAL crown, are joining 2005 champions Cincinnati St. Xavier (9-1) in D-I, Steubenville (10-0) in D-III and Coldwater (10-0) in D-IV.

The only defending state champ not in the playoff field is Delphos St. John?s (6-4), which missed a D-VI berth after losing Friday to Coldwater.

For the Irish and seventh-year coach Greg Dempsey, the first order of business was putting last Friday?s 13-7 loss to St. John?s Jesuit behind them and moving on to their first-round playoff matchup with Piqua (8-2) tomorrow at Lake.

The loss to the Titans (8-2), who play Saturday in a D-I playoff game at Canton McKinley, snapped Central?s CL-record, 22-game winning streak and cost the Irish an Associated Press state poll championship.

?That was one of our primary goals, to get back,? Dempsey said of qualifying. ?The kids wanted a chance. This is the only sport in varsity playoffs where you have to qualify to get a chance to defend your title.

?Now it?s a fresh start. Even though we?re coming off a loss, everybody?s 0-0. Just like we said last year, ?Why not us?? ?

Central?s next step is a big one: finding a way to neutralize Piqua running back Brandon Saine, who is bound for Ohio State. The all-time state record holder in the 100-meter dash (10.38 seconds), Saine is also a strong ball carrier at 6-2 and 200 pounds.

?Besides being the fastest guy in Ohio, he has great size and he?s very powerful,? Dempsey said of Saine. ?He?s a Herschel Walker-type back. He?s not going to juke a lot. He?s going to make a cut and go.

?The big thing is trying to get him before he gets to the edge. That?s when he?s most dangerous. If he beats you to the outside, you?re going to have a lot of problems.?

Saine has carried 202 times this season for 1,602 yards, caught 11 passes for 232 yards, and scored 30 total touchdowns ? 25 rushing, three receiving and two on returns.

?Everybody says that?s a tough break getting Piqua and Brandon Saine in the first round,? Dempsey said. ?But you know you?re going to face a good team and, coming off a loss, this is a team that can get your team?s attention right away.

?Not only do they have Brandon Saine, but they have other very good skill players, and their defense is very aggressive. This is a very well-rounded football team.

We?re focused on Piqua, not just Brandon Saine.?

Indians quarterback Justin Hemm has completed 62 of 118 passes for 1,126 yards and 15 TDs with five interceptions, and has rushed 110 times for 884 yards and nine TDs. Saine will team next year at Ohio State with Central?s own big-time playmaker, Dane Sanzenbacher (49 catches, 884 yards, 10 TDs), a senior who plays wideout, cornerback, and kick/punt returner.

A pivotal force in Central?s championship run last year, Sanzenbacher put together one of the best postseason performances in Ohio history last year, especially for a wideout.

He scored nine touchdowns and intercepted six passes in the playoffs alone.

?This is the week where we?ve got to start stepping things up a notch,? Sanzenbacher said, ?just like we did last year. The playoffs is a whole new ballgame. You?re playing new teams you haven?t seen before, so you have to be better.?

Can Sanzenbacher rise to his 2005 postseason performance level?

?I hope so,? he said. ?I hope the whole team does, because we?re going to need everybody?s participation to make another run at it.?

The only other returning two-way starter for the Irish is senior tight end/defensive end Chris Dominiak, who says regrouping will be crucial in Central?s quest for a repeat title.

?It was a tough loss and everybody had their hearts set on an undefeated season,? Dominiak said of losing to St. John?s. ?But you can?t let obstacles like that stand in the way of what the ultimate goal is. We have bigger fish to fry, so to speak.

?Step one is to continue to improve every week. You can?t rest on your laurels. You have to prepare yourself.?

Dempsey sees plenty of parallels between his current team and last year?s title squad.

?One similarity between this year?s team and last year?s is that they?re very confident but not cocky,? Dempsey said. ?Like last year, there?s a great chemistry on this team, we have a lot of team speed, and both teams were very physical teams.?

?I think both teams were pretty much the same, talent-wise,? Sanzenbacher said.

?We had a lot of good players last year and we?ve pretty much been able to replace them this year. But it?ll be a test in the playoffs to see if we still have the same heart as last year?s team did.?
