Dane Sanzenbacher has experienced the "wrath" of Jay Cutler several times this season, but the Chicago Bears rookie said the sometimes tough treatment by his quarterback only makes him and his fellow receivers better.
"He absolutely doesn't take it easy on me," Sanzenbacher said Monday on "The Waddle & Silvy Show" on ESPN 1000. "You're going to get the wrath of it every now and then. [I got it] at least three times [Sunday night against the Vikings]. It was all warranted.

Bears rookie Dane Sanzenbacher joins "Waddle & Silvy" to talk about his start to the season, Jay Cutler and the chances of him doing a Lovie Smith impression.

"Jay has been great since I got here. I think I was surprised by how patient he was with me at the beginning. I think it's helped. He's a tough critic. He's tough on all the guys, but it makes us better in the long run. But I think he has been one of the most helpful guys for me personally in my development."
An undrafted free agent out of Ohio State, Sanzenbacher has emerged as one of Cutler's favorite targets this season. He caught his team-leading third touchdown pass on a 13-yard connection with Cutler in the Bears' 39-10 victory over the Vikings on Sunday. He has 17 catches, tied for third on the team, and has been targeted 30 times, also third-best on the Bears.
Cutler has been a polarizing figure at times for what some perceive as poor body language on the sideline and an often prickly demeanor, but Sanzenbacher said his role as a leader is unquestioned.
"I can see where some of [the criticism] comes from," Sanzenbacher said. "I can see guys get the sideline shots and the body language and whatnot. But I think inside the locker room he's been a great leader. There's no question he is one of the leaders of this team, and there's a reason why he is one of the captains of this team."
Sanzenbacher, who led the Big Ten in receiving yards and touchdown catches last season, said he didn't set out to lead the Bears in a statistical category, just earn a spot on the team.
"I didn't really have expectations of a number I wanted to hit, that I wanted to lead the receiving corps in touchdowns or lead this," Sanzenbacher said. "I just wanted to come in and first of all make the team and kind of evolve from there. I think at this point it's doing whatever I can to contribute and stay on the field and earn the trust of your teammates. I think first and foremost when you come in as a rookie, you want to earn that trust. I think that's what I work on every day."

The Bears' impressive play tabled that discussion and put other pressing issues on the back burner. That's what happens when the defense attacks, the offensive line gives Jay Cutler time and Mike Martz calls a balanced game. Win by four touchdowns and problems appear easier to solve and (Dane) Sanzenbacher simpler to spell.
Speaking of the receiver Cutler has referred to as "mini-Wes Welker,'' Sanzenbacher's 13-yard touchdown pass in traffic earned him more respect on a night the receivers gained some redemption too. Hester caught five passes, including a 48-yard TD reception on the Bears' third play, and even Roy Williams got involved.
Instead of catching flak, for a change they made big catches. Bravo.
Sanzenbacher still in Bears' mix
Rookie receiver will lose time to returning Bennett but will sub for other

The buzz surrounding Earl Bennett's return to the Bears' lineup has taken the spotlight away from the guy who quietly developed into one of Jay Cutler's favorite targets.
Undrafted rookie receiver Dane Sanzenbacher leads the team with three touchdown receptions, one more than the other five receivers have combined. But Sanzenbacher understands his role won't remain the same with Bennett back from a Week 2 upper body injury.
Both receivers play the slot, and Bennett has 19 career starts compared to Sanzenbacher's one.
"It's kind of the same as when the season kicked off,'' Sanzenbacher said. "He's a great asset to our offense. But you're not expected to be less prepared when you're in the position I'm in now.
"You have to be ready. Guys go down. Guys get tired. You're still going to have to work in there and not miss a beat.''
Don't expect Sanzenbacher to get squeezed out completely. Offensive coordinator Mike Martz made that clear Thursday as the Bears prepare for a talented Eagles secondary, led by slot-stopper Nnamdi Asomugha.
"(Sanzenbacher) does the same stuff Earl does so now he can help out at the 'X' receiver, too,'' Martz said, referring to the position Johnny Knox and Roy Williams play.
"(Sanzenbacher) actually plays four positions for us. He'll be all over the place. And he's going to start for us in our four-wide receiver sets.''

Forgotten Dane Sanzenbacher has rapport with Caleb Hanie
By Mark Potash [email protected] November 25, 2011
Remember Dane Sanzenbacher?
The rookie wide receiver from Ohio State made the roster as an undrafted free agent and filled the Earl Bennett role as Jay Cutler?s favorite target with 17 receptions for 166 yards and three touchdowns in six games after Bennett suffered a nagging chest bruise in Week 2 against the Saints.
But since Bennett returned against the Philadelphia Eagles, Sanzenbacher has not caught a pass in a limited role. A glaring drop against the Eagles probably didn?t help his cause. But it?s Bennett?s return that pushed Sanzenbacher to the background.
Does he feel like the forgotten man?
??I don?t think anybody in this room feels forgotten,?? Sanzenbacher said. ??We have a unique room in that we root for each other. We want each other to succeed, and I think not every team has that. It?s a good thing we have going.
??It?s hard to think about yourself when you have a [winning] streak going. I?m obviously not satisfied with where I?m at. I want to be on the field. But it?s a process.??
For what it?s worth, Sanzenbacher was Caleb Hanie?s favorite target in the preseason. Hanie threw to Sanzenbacher 16 times, completing seven passes for 81 yards.
He said he doesn?t think that will earn him more playing time.
??But it can?t hurt,?? he said. ??I think it was good for me to have worked with Caleb so much. And even through the year ? a lot of times in route timing I?ve worked with Caleb, too. We?ve become familiar, and the more you can get the timing, the more you can connect on passes with the same guy.??
Has Dane Sanzenbacher fallen out of favor after that drop in Philadelphia? Does he still have a role in the present and future? -- Ryan Yoder, from Twitter
I don't think he's fallen out of favor, but I think his role has been diminished since Earl Bennett and Devin Hester have gotten healthy. He was playing a lot early in the year because the Bears didn't have a full deck at the position. Sanzenbacher should have a role in the future. As for the present, I'm not sure any wide receiver has a role.
