If there's one thing Sanzenbacher had to learn to do well while he was at Ohio State...Onebuckfan;1994691; said:..Caught the ball behind him...hmmm
Sanzenbacher scores first NFL touchdown
BLADE STAFF
Toledo native Dane Sanzenbacher has scored his first touchdown in the National Football League.
Sanzenbacher, a wide receiver for the Chicago Bears, caught an eight yard pass from Jay Cutler for the touchdown.
Sanzenbacher finished the game with three receptions for 33 yards as the Bears lost to the New Orleans Saints 30-13.
Gatorubet;1995410; said:He did drop a Cutler pass in traffic on third-and-10 that would have been a first down, but a good move earlier forced a DB to hold Dane and that made it first down. All in all, a good day despite the uncharacteristic drop. His first TD was a good catch behind him. And he kept the ball.
The Bears need Williams and rookie Dane Sanzenbacher to be viable targets in the middle of the field for Jay Cutler. That's where Bennett works so well, while Devin Hester and Knox aren't very productive between the numbers.
Sanzenbacher is adjusting to the role after playing on the outside at Ohio State. He would slide inside in three- and four-receiver sets, but it's a different region in the NFL. If he had any question, all he had to do was watch Saints safety Roman Harper hit Bennett with his helmet.
"Defensive guys are faster, guys understand the concepts of the game better, where they have to cover in blitzes," Sanzenbacher said. "You don't want to take those hits, but it's part of the job description."
The Bears haven't hesitated to promote Sanzenbacher quickly, and the key has been the trust Cutler has in him.
"The next guy knows his number could be called at any time, and you can go from being a role player to one of the guys we're really counting on each down," coach Lovie Smith said. "So Dane has seemed like he has been a part of what we have been doing since training camp. He just showed up here."
Sam Shields could have entered Sunday's game at Soldier Field wearing an orange uniform. But because of a career twist, the former Miami Hurricane ended up with the Packers and has left the Bears feeling blue.
The second-year defensive back had a few teams to choose from as an undrafted free agent despite some off-the-field issues. He apparently committed verbally to the Bears before formally choosing the Packers.
"I liked everything about his game back then,'' Bears coach Lovie Smith said of Shields. "I thought he had the traits that fit what we did. Tough guy. Had great speed. I knew he played receiver and was another great skilled athlete from Miami.''
A league-high five bypassed rookies made the Bears' 53-man roster this season: Dane Sanzenbacher, Winston Venable, Kyle Adams, Mario Addison and Dom DeCicco. All saw action in the 30-13 loss to the Saints last Sunday.
Sanzenbacher caught an 8-yard touchdown pass, Venable, Adams and DeCicco contributed on special teams and Addison played one snap at defensive end. DeCicco leads the team with three special teams tackles.
Dane Sanzenbacher, wide receiver (Jeff Shiver): "We all had a good feel for him coming in. When a kid comes in undrafted, that's a hard hill to climb. And then they throw a lot at you. When I talk about the makeup, he has the makeup. He wasn't going to look at the numbers or what people were saying or his size. He just went for it. So you just have to give him credit.''
