WR Dane Sanzenbacher (Official Thread)

Dane just returned a punt for 65 yards - called back on a penalty

The holding penalty occurred at the line of scrimmage, about the time the ball was kicked, long before Dane caught it. He went backwards a few yards and across almost half the field in order to get into the seam behind the blockers.

He made the punter miss easily, and when he did, you could see the lonely flag that had been sitting there for close to 10 seconds before Dane ran by it.

It got called back, but it'll help him stay on the team.

That kick return may have been the play that sealed it for him. Hester is good at this too, Dane gives them backup now at three WR positions and as a returner. Dane as a WR may be Cutler's go to guy once the season get's rolling, Williams has not displayed that ability despite all his hype. Good show by the Buckeye.

Rookie receiver Dane Sanzenbacher caught a game-high four passes for 50 yards and returned a punt 66 yards for a touchdown that was nullified by a penalty. Second-year defensive end Nick Reed recorded a sack, deflected two passes and made a key stop on fourth-and-goal from the 1.

"There are some tough cuts coming up," Smith said. "They don?t let us keep everyone."

Lovie has a tough job to do. Hope he wasn't referring to Dane here and saying that these guys are making his decision tougher.

Dane Sanzenbacher not letting go
After best performance of preseason, Bears undrafted rookie looks like a lock
By Melissa Isaacson

CHICAGO -- Conventional wisdom would seem to indicate that the next time we hear Dane Sanzenbacher's name in any consequential way for the Chicago Bears -- other than him making the 53-man roster on Saturday -- will mean that another receiver has been injured.

Dan Sanzenbacher had four catches for 50 yards against the Browns on Thursday.

But whether he is a weekly inactive ready to step in, or a significant part of the team's offense, Bears fans should be relieved to have Sanzenbacher, who appeared to have unofficially nailed down the sixth receiver spot in a 24-14 victory over the Cleveland Browns in the teams' final preseason game Thursday night.

The undrafted rookie free agent arguably gives the Bears' wide receiving corps more depth than at any other position on the team. It's ironic, of course, because receiver was a position of great concern going into the season, and it's still without a marquee player. But if Sanzenbacher is the most lightly regarded receiver the Bears have, they could do a lot worse.

Sanzenbacher caught four passes for 50 yards, including a 22-yarder on a third-and-13 from the Browns' 28-yard line, keeping alive a drive that resulted in a 22-yard field goal on the first series of the game.

He also returned five punts for 31 yards, muffing one but recovering for a 2-yard gain.

It just seemed like he was in every play in the first half.

"If nothing else, I'm just grateful for the opportunities I had," Sanzenbacher said. "Because as an undrafted free agent, the coaches gave me every chance in the world to make this team, so it's on nobody but me whatever happens."

Rookie Sanzenbacher stands out in preseason finale
By: Larry Mayer | Last Updated: 9/2/2011

CHICAGO ? Dane Sanzenbacher delivered another impressive performance in Thursday night's preseason finale against the Cleveland Browns, catching a game-high four passes for 50 yards.

The undrafted rookie receiver also returned a punt 66 yards for a touchdown. The play was nullified by a holding penalty, but it remained fresh in coach Lovie Smith's mind after the Bears' 24-14 win.

"We've seen those things from the start of training camp," Smith said. "He's impressed us just about every day in some form. Tonight, though, to show that he can take the ball the distance on a punt return was something we haven't seen. He's a good football player. He's consistently been that way throughout camp."
Dane Sanzenbacher led all Bears receivers with 4 catches for 50 yards.

Sanzenbacher sustained the Bears' field-goal drive on the game's opening possession by converting three straight third downs with receptions of 6 and 22 yards and by drawing a pass interference penalty.

"You can go back and always find little things that you want to clean up," Sanzenbacher said. "I think overall it was a good way to close out the preseason. Our job is just to make it as hard as possible on these coaches to make a decision. So hopefully I can do that."

Rookie WR Sanzenbacher shines in grand finale
By Mark Potash on September 2, 2011

When Dane Sanzenbacher turned around after returning a punt 66 yards for a touchdown in the Bears' 24-14 victory over the Cleveland Browns on Thursday night at Soldier Field, he was disappointed to see a penalty flag that brought it back.

But not that disappointed. Though the return was nullified, it doesn't mean the play didn't happen.

That's the beauty of preseason football. Everything is on film, whether it counted or not.

''It was great,'' Sanzenbacher said about the punt return. ''Anything you can do to try to turn heads at this point is a positive step. You hate to see the flag on the ground when you turn around. But I can't remember the last time I returned a punt. It was probably in high school. So it was pretty cool being out there and doing it.''

Dane Sanzenbacher hopes he showed Chicago Bears coaches enough during the preseason to merit making the final roster.

All NFL teams must be down to the 53-man limit by Saturday.

?It?s going to be a tough wait, obviously, knowing that any time in that 48 hours you can get a call that can go either way,? said the undrafted wide receiver from Ohio State after Thursday night?s 24-14 Bears win over the Browns at Soldier Field.

Don't sweat too much. He did the great job selling himself. If he's not a Bear, then no one is. Running that kick back sealed the deal in my mind. Lovie just got some icing on the cake. Good job Dane whatever happens, you gave it your all. :oh:
