WR Dane Sanzenbacher (Official Thread)

The pick in the endzone near the end of the game.. was being thrown to Dane... you see him come open over the middle at the very back of the endzone... he cuts across the camera... but the LB jumped up at the 2 to make the pick

Woulda been big time cool to see Dane get a TD grab on natl TV... Gruden would have hyped it big

Agreed, and so would have a few of "us". He did well for only playing a half, 4 catches for 34 - second on the team for receptions.

4. If you were watching the game you saw Sanzenbacher, the undrafted free agent from Ohio State, get on the field in the first half, something Johnny Knox didn't do on offense. But they play different positions so it can't be judged that way. Sanzenbacher is a slot player in the four-wide package and when Earl Bennett needed to catch a break, it was his turn.

On first down at the Giants' 44-yard line with 15 seconds until halftime, Sanzenbacher caught his first pass in a Bears uniform, a short Cutler throw along the sideline. Instead of turning out of bounds, he tried to get upfield and was quickly tackled for a seven-yard gain forcing the team to use a timeout.

"This was my first catch and I was battling in my mind, do I want to go out or do I want to make a play with it?" Sanzenbacher said. "I obviously was wrong. They gave me some grief and I know I've got to get out of bounds on that but first catch, I couldn't make myself do it."

He played more in the second half and finished with four receptions for 34 yards. He's making a bid to be a sixth receiver if the Bears go with that many.

"I think in games like this you want to get opportunities wherever you can," he said. "When it's with the ones, it's even better if you can squeeze some reps in there. It was encouraging.

"When you've been working all the through and putting everything you can out there on the field, you hope it is a legitimate shot."

The Bears need to give Sanzo as many reps as they can, he'll make the plays. When defenses start to key on him, Hester or Williams will be there, good problem to have as long as the QB has time to throw the ball...

Wideout watching

It will be a real surprise if Dane Sanzenbacher doesn't make the final 53. The Bears have not usually kept six receivers but this is a pass-based offense, receivers coach Darryl Drake likes Sanzenbacher?s play and, perhaps most important, Jay Cutler likes him as a receiver.

Sanzenbacher shows up on film just about every game and practice with something, which is what you want so your position coach has some ammunition in the cutdown meetings.

Yes, he should've stepped out of bounds after his catch at the end of the second quarter. But it appeared to be a significant statement that Cutler went back to him on the next play.

Besides, there are growing trust/production issues with Roy Williams, and you cannot put a guy like Sanzenbacher on the practice squad with what he?s shown.

Which undrafted rookie is putting together the best training camp?
I don't think there's any question that wide receiver Dane Sanzenbacher has been the most impressive undrafted rookie in training camp. Ohio State's MVP last season has consistently demonstrated excellent quickness, hands and playmaking ability. Sanzenbacher's emergence has been pretty remarkable given that there was no offseason program due to the lockout. He really appears to be a perfect fit as a slot receiver in coordinator Mike Martz's offense. The rest of the preseason will be crucial in terms of Sanzenbacher's chances of making the 53-man roster.

He continues to impress.
