Receiver to undergo more cancer treatment
Sunday, August 24, 2008
For the third time in nine months, Ohio State receiver Dan Potokar will undergo treatment for testicular cancer.
Potokar, a junior from Grove City, begins full-head radiation Monday after five lesions were found in his brain last week. It is not brain cancer, but rather testicular cancer that has spread.
He originally was diagnosed in December and had surgery to remove a testicle, followed by radiation treatments.
In the spring, the cancer returned in his lungs and abdomen. Potokar spent several weeks undergoing intensive chemotherapy in Indianapolis.
He returned home with the cancer apparently under control, began lifting weights and regained most of the 50 pounds he had lost during treatments.
"This cancer is aggressive, but so is Danny," said his aunt, Suzanne Thomas. "It's frustrating, but the family is optimistic."
While Ohio State receiver Dan Potokar began radiation treatment for testicular cancer this week, his aunt, Suzanne Thomas, noted how grateful his family is that the fund the university started for him last spring is still holding up.
The university originally raised about $75,000 to help the family cope with expenses related to his illness; he underwent intensive chemotherapy treatments in the spring in Indianapolis and his parents took time off work to be with him.
Potokar, a junior from Grove City, is having the current round of treatments in Columbus.
Happy 2009- Last year at this time, Dan was still undergoing chemo ? today he will be at the Fiesta bowl routing on his Buckeyes. As I reflect over this past year, it is amazing to me all that has taken place. Danny has been through extensive treatments and continues to fight with amazing attitude and amazing strength. Back in October, Dan underwent a stereo-tactic surgery (radiation) to treat the last of 5 lesions they had found on his brain. This had followed shortly after three weeks of full brain radiation treatments that took care of 4 of the lesions. We anxiously wait for the middle of February, when we will find out the results. Dan has continued to attend classes at OSU and is also holding a part-time job, while enjoying time with his fianc? Stephanie and their friends. Please continue to keep Dan in your prayers. Without the insurmountable support that so many of you have graciously offered our family, I don?t know how we could have made it. You have all been a part of this battle with Dan. No words can express the sincere gratitude we have for ALL the love, support (in so many ways) and especially the prayers that have sustained Dan and our entire family.

He's been helping out with the WRs and Special teams at practice.

I work for NBC 4 and our sports anchor (Jerod Smalley) did a nice story about/with Dan the other night.
Courageous young man...
