WR Corey "Philly" Brown (Official Thread)

By Matt Alkire. Compares Browns skill set to Reggie Bush, Percy Harvin, and Ted Ginn Jr. A little over the top if you ask me. Brown looks like a fine prospect and his offers indicate he's among the cream of this years crop. However, comparing him to a heisman winner and 3 first round draft choices seems a bit premature.

Mentions his high level of HS competition and how he placed 3rd in the state last season in the 100-meter. Brown never ran track before this past season.

Scout $: Brown Brings a Playmaker to the Shoe

When Ohio State picked up four-star wide receiver Corey Brown they grabbed a player that will bring a versatile playmaker to their offense. With Terrelle Pryor in the backfield and Brown moving all over the place, the Buckeyes will have a very dangerous tandem.

It's really not off base because he said their styles are similar...he didn't say he is as talented as they were. Either way, Brown will likely end up higher in the rankings than he is ranked right now imo. The injury is the only reason he isn't a 5 star.

Lohn on Football: Brown?s commitment may go ignored
Published: Thursday, September 17, 2009

The sarcastic question posed to Dan Algeo at Monday night?s weekly meeting of the Delaware County Football Coaches Association was this: ?Think they?ll stop calling??

The Cardinal O?Hara coach paused, then provided a predictable answer: ?Some will. Some won?t.?

One of the top recruits in the country, Corey Brown gave a verbal commitment to play his college football at Ohio State University during a weekend trip to the school. However, that doesn?t mean the O?Hara standout is done with the recruiting process.

Recruiting in college football is one of the most cutthroat of business pursuits. Every school chasing a top prospect is trying to gain an edge on the competition. It means making hollow promises. It means, in some cases, disparaging other programs and coaches. It can result in building a 17-year-old?s ego to a ridiculous level.

It?s up to the recruit to sift through it all, and determine who and what can be trusted. Brown reached that point with OSU Sunday morning and seems genuinely pleased with his decision. So why will his phone still ring and mail pile?

Blame the NCAA.

Unlike other sports, which have an early signing period in November, football forces its recruits to wait until February to sign a letter of intent. Because of this rule, players like Brown ? those who have pledged their services ? will still be hounded.

No, not every school will keep coming at Brown. Some will respect his decision and move on to the next recruit on the wish list, trying to convince the athlete that his university is the perfect fit.

Others may try to lure Brown away from Ohio State. They might up the promised ante. Some will criticize Ohio State and tell Brown why it?s not the right school. It?s up to him to stay true to his gut.

Of course, the NCAA could also help matters. Let football recruits sign in November, like other sports? athletes. It would take the pressure off and eliminate the hounding and less-than-savory tactics that are part of what can be an ugly game.

The only problem with the article and early deadlines is no officials can begin until the start of their senior school year. The NCAA would have to change that to allow a player like Brown to go see schools on officials at the successful completion of his junior year. Which seems like the right thing for a student-athlete so they can concentrate on school and their HS team during the fall of their senior year.

That's not a good enough reason to not have a early signing period. Some players don't need to make a official visit before making up their mind. For those that want to take an official first, there's always the February signing period if they can't get the official visit in prior to November.

O'Hara powers past N. Catholic
By Pat Leonard
For The Inquirer

Cardinal O'Hara's favorite offensive play call, "power," is appropriately named, as host North Catholic found out Saturday. The visiting undefeated Lions got 222 all-purpose yards from running back Corey Brown and rolled to a 23-6 victory over North Catholic in a nonleague game played at Frankford High.

"That's our bread-and-butter play," O'Hara coach Danny Algeo said after his team controlled the line of scrimmage. The Class AAAA Lions raised their record to 3-0.

"Power" calls for a handoff out of the double-wing formation to Ohio State-bound tailback Brown, who receives the snap in motion from right to left and then plows ahead behind 6-foot-4, 275-pound senior offensive tackle Matt Williams and a gang of other offensive linemen.

At the half, North Catholic (1-2), of the Catholic League's Class AAA Blue Division, trailed just 10-0 after holding Brown to only 31 yards rushing.

But then the dam broke, and Brown finished his first game since orally committing to the Buckeyes with those 222 all-purpose yards and a touchdown, including 109 rushing yards gained mostly on "power."

"Corey's just an electrifying player," O'Hara quarterback Ryan Laughlin said. "It's awesome having him on the team. He's a threat in the backfield, out wide. We just have to take advantage of having him."

"We didn't play a perfect game," O'Hara's Brown said, "but that was a good football team, and we came prepared."

Football Friday: O?Hara backfield not a one-man act
Published: Friday, October 2, 2009
By MATT SMITH
[email protected]

They are the usual suspects when Cardinal O?Hara breaks the huddle and lines up in formation on the offensive side of the ball.

Dan O?Hara is the fullback and Adam Dempsey complements Corey Brown at the halfback positions.

One of the state?s most highly-touted college recruits, Brown?s presence looms large. He?s the flashy speedster and the game-changer that every team dreams of having.

Brown?s natural, eye-popping athletic ability earns him headlines, respect from peers and national recognition.

Entering Week 5, Brown ranks third in Delaware County with 493 rushing yards. His highest single-game rushing total (163) came in an easy Week 1 triumph over Archbishop Wood.

Brown?s numbers could be even more impressive, but the Lions preach balance and continuity on the offensive side. That is why Dempsey and O?Hara are finding ways to contribute every week.

Ohio State commit Corey Brown, who would suffer a right-knee injury in the fourth quarter

every person affiliated with O'Hara held his or her breath with 9:28 showing when Brown, while blocking, went down in a heap. As Brown was helped off the field by two teammates, it was so quiet you could have heard title hopes end.

But after spending about 3 minutes in the locker room, Brown walked back to the bench with only a hint of a limp. An on-site doctor said the injury could be termed a strain for now, but that a workup would be performed early this week.
