WR C.J. Saunders (Official Thread)

I think it's now at 86. Looking like Saunders may get some type of coaching internship with Ohio St. now since he is a coaches' favorite.
Ryan Day says he has "coaching in his blood".

If that’s the case, still being at 86, I have to imagine that someone may ‘decline (cough) to play this year (cough) and retain scholarship (cough) due to the COVIDs.’

Day said the plan is for Saunders to join Ohio State's coaching staff in some capacity, but specifics are not available.

Thinking it over, this isn't the worst thing that could happen to him. He went from walk on to a team captain with a full scholarship. In 5 years he should have already graduated. He's got to be (around) 24 years old. I doubt if he has any realistic NFL expectations. He wants to be a coach, so now he is getting a 1 year head start on his "career after playing football".

Everything you say makes perfect sense. But why do I have the feeling the arbiters of this decision didn't consider any one of them.

Fucking bullshit. I'm not sure how big of a player he would have been on our offense this year (I think he would have definitely been a solid contributor), but it's just unfair to CJ, who I'm sure wanted to play one final year. That being said, he is sitting in a good position for his future coaching career though, so certainly not all bad.

This fall hasn't been a normal one for anybody in this country.

The coronavirus pandemic didn't stop 51 current and former Ohio State athletes from graduating from the university following the Autumn 2020 semester.

Former linebacker Ryan Shazier, point guard CJ Walker, center Josh Myers, former cornerback Jeff Okudah, defensive tackle Haskell Garrett, former offensive lineman Alex Boone, wing Musa Jallow and linebacker Tuf Borland were among those to earn degrees from their university during Sunday's virtual commencement ceremony.

In total, seven former Buckeye athletes returned to school to take classes and finish their classwork through the degree completion program set up by the athletic department in 1994: Shazier, Boone, Okudah, Connor Curlis (baseball), Sam Jardine (men’s hockey), Isaiah Prince (football) and C.J. Saunders (football). Saunders, who earned a Master's Degree in kinesiology, is currently working on the football staff in an unannounced capacity after having his sixth-year waiver denied by the NCAA earlier this year.

Even though it’s been more than two years since C.J. Saunders last played in a football game, the former Ohio State wide receiver hasn’t closed the book on his playing career yet.

Saunders, who was a student coach for the Buckeyes last season after his appeal for a sixth year of eligibility was denied by the NCAA, will be among the participants in Ohio State’s March 30 pro day, where he’ll take his shot at impressing NFL scouts in hopes of landing an opportunity to play in the league.

Given that he didn’t see a ton of playing time at Ohio State and that he hasn’t played in a game since 2018 after missing the entire 2019 season with a knee injury, Saunders knows it’s uncertain whether he’ll even get invited to an NFL training camp. But he doesn’t want to hang up his cleats without taking his best shot at continuing to play the sport he loves.

“I think I do have stuff left in the tank, and I didn’t really get to fully show it at Ohio State on Saturdays whether it be unhealthy or just a lot of really good players playing alongside me,” Saunders told Eleven Warriors last week. “And at the end of the day, whether I play for a long time or here in a couple months nobody calls and it’s the end of my playing days, that I can look back and say ‘I gave it everything I had’ and I put all, everything I could, into this opportunity.

“I didn’t want to leave anything up to regret, so I’m just trying to exhaust all options. And if it’s in my future, then so be it, and if not, then we’ll find something else and keep moving. But I just didn’t want to live with any regret down the road.”
