WR C.J. Saunders (Official Thread)

While many of us might not want to dump on CJ after such a big day, Urban is a straight shooter and he does need to be more well rounded. That's not a shot at small guys. The biggest WR on the team is Jaylen Harris. He got flattened on one snap trying to block. He can't play until he tightens that up too. It doesn't mean either are unworthy or incapable of getting there.

I had to go find today's quotes because yesterday's comments from Urban were effusive in their praise. He's also fond of using press quotes to motivate players.

I get that he needs to be able to block but anyone would be kidding themselves by saying Sanzo or Renfrow were good pass blocking receivers. Not saying CJ should start or anything weird but there certainly could be spots to put him in the game that can take advantage of his abilities.

Like if its 3rd and 8+ why not you know? We are going to throw the ball anyways so who cares if they know the kid can't block or blocks poorly. Maybe situational we can use CJ though.

Oh, and don't look now, but Ohio State has a passing game averaging 319 yards per contest....

Yeah.... need to throw to the walk on more... Funny how CJ Saunders is the savior at WR but JT is some noodle-armed liability.
Well lets see where we are in a few weeks lol... Heck, I'll be watching the IU vs PSU game to compare to be honest. If PSU is limited more so then us I'll feel pretty good about where we stand.

I wanted to see Haskins in action but now that I have I do feel JT is the best option. A little more on CJ though... At what point is asking him to be that 195-205 pound receiver (UFM seems to mention that range a lot) actually not good for kid like CJ? If CJ goes all out and does everything he can to become bigger and strong is that going to slow him down? is that going to change who he is?

Terry McLaurin can block for example but struggles to catch the ball and we still see him? I don't think CJ should start or anything but it'd be nice to see him in certain packages.

I certainly don't want to be understood as ripping on CJ Saunders. I feel great for the kid, and I'm glad he got to fulfill the dream of catching a TD pass for the good guys. In fact, one of my friend's son played with him in HS and says if anyone has earned it, it's CJ Saunders. In any event, my comments are directed at maybe some people pumping the breaks a bit on what CJ Saunders brings to the table after the UNLV game. I mean, and this isn't something you said I don't think - but you can't use "But it was UNLV" when evaluating JT and not admit it "was just UNLV" when looking at CJ's performance. For my part, I don't think it's right to say it in either case... or.. at least it's not dispositive of anything ... on that score, I tend to go ahead and defer to the guys who make their living coaching Ohio State football. I trust that the three time NC winning coach can figure out if CJ Saunders deserves to be playing ahead of other guys.

I agree with that... I guess that's the only tape we really have on CJ though to make any judgments. All moot because as you said UFM has already spoke on the subject and as it stands CJ won't be in any game that's in question.

Dane should have had the key block on the longest run in OSU history:

Not saying CJ should start or anything weird but there certainly could be spots to put him in the game that can take advantage of his abilities.

I read it more as a challenge to become complete. Meyer does that a lot.

Speaking for short white guys, I couldn't be happier for the kid and I took UFM's comments as positive and motivational, but no BS. I'm sure he's not going to require Evan Spencer-level blocking, but he expects and will require more. That said, kid's already a better playmaker (except for the one catch against Alabama) than Spencer.
