CANTON - Fresh off an American Indoor Football League championship, the Canton Legends re-signed Head Coach Bobby Olive on Thursday to a one-year contract.
On the field, Olive serves as offensive coordinator along with head coach.
Off the field, he is adding the title director of football operations.
“The chance to repeat as AIFL champs with this group of players was an opportunity I didn’t want to pass up,” said Olive, a former defensive back at Ohio State University. “While coaching is my passion, I’m also excited about moving into the front office and helping the Legends to become as well-known off the field and in the Canton community as they are on the field.”
Olive becomes the second coach this month to add front-office duties. Line coach Ed Korns was named the team’s general manager Aug. 2.
“Bobby’s return to Canton in 2007 became our top priority once the team won the American Bowl in Rome,” Korns said.

CANTON Bobby Olive recently decided it was time to sew up his loose ends.

Now Olive is out as head coach of the Canton Legends of the American Indoor Football Association, and General Manager Ed Korns is in.

?I?ve been working on a line of clothes for the last two years,? Olive said. ?We got it trademarked, Respectgame, and we (his partners) decided this was our coming out year, in ?08.

?I wanted Coach Korns to have the opportunity to do his thing.?

Olive did his thing coaching the Legends. He led the team to the American Indoor Football League title in 2006 and guided the team to the North Division finals last year, only to lose to the Reading Express a game away from defending their crown

Bobby Olive returns as Legends head coach

CANTON There will be at least one familiar face returning to the Canton Legends sideline this weekend.

Bobby Olive was expected to sign a contract Tuesday night to become head coach of the team he led to a 2006 league title, team owner Joe Hoffman said. The Legends (0-6) also hope to add quarterbacks Kevin Mason and Scott McMullen in order to generate a second-half AIFA playoff push.

"We have the potential to turn this thing around," Hoffman said. "The guys seem excited."

Olive was Canton's head coach in 2006 and 2007, taking the team to the playoffs both years. He was scheduled to be at practice with the team Tuesday night.

Olive, a former Ohio State wide receiver, left the Legends after last season to develop a clothing line. He was not available for comment Tuesday.

Former Head Coach Ed Korns was offered the opportunity to stay as defensive coordinator. Korns talked with Olive on Tuesday, and said he would give his answer by Thursday.

Olive plans to put the 'oh' in Legends' offense

CANTON The mad scientist is back.

"I've got to get to my laboratory and start putting together a lineup," Bobby Olive said Thursday, two days after returning as head coach of the Canton Legends.

Canton's coach in 2006 and 2007, Olive's first game back is Saturday as the Legends travel to Erie (5-2) in an American Indoor Football Association North matchup. He takes over a Legends squad that is 0-6 and has scored just 13 points combined in their last two games.

As weird as this is, Bobby was my substitute teacher today at Gahanna. He said he is thinking about coaching high school football in the Columbus area and needs to be able to teach to do that. So just a strange run in with someone I guess used to play for the Buckeyes (He was before my time).

Frey-To-Olive Caps 1990 Upset Over Iowa

It was the first time in 31 years that a ranked Iowa team (No. 6) faced an unranked Ohio State team. But Greg Frey managed to drive the Buckeyes down the field one more time for a big upset in 1990. Frey found Bobby Olive at the back of the endzone for a 27-26 win with one second left. Today Frey resides in Columbus as a private QB coach and FSN Ohio analyst. Ohio State?s Bobby Olive talks about the difference between his game-winning catches against LSU during his sophomore season and against Iowa his senior year, and how his mindset was different for each catch (running time is 4:35: transcript below the jump).

Lost Lettermen: This is Jose Bosch from LostLettermen.com and I?m being joined by Ohio State?s Bobby Olive. Bobby thank you very much for joining us today.

Bobby Olive: Not a problem, thanks for having me.

LL: The punt return against LSU, that was kind of your breakout moment as a player at Ohio State. You guys were down two touchdowns and had an amazing comeback. On that particular play, when you?re back there in the moment, what?s going through your mind? Are you just telling yourself, ?I?m going to make a big run?? Are you telling yourself to hold on to the ball? What exactly is going through your mind just before you get that ball?

BO: Well for me it was pretty much two different mindsets. My sophomore year, that was the LSU game, I was still trying to learn about out the whole Buckeye history and all that stuff. So at that time I was still learning how to become a college football player. And that was my first big game playing in too. So with me being so young ? and I remember being in that huddle the last drive and every play ? I was a first-year starter, Greg Frey our quarterback was a first-year, Jeff Graham ? it?s like half of the offense that was on the field was all first-year starters, so it was new to everybody.

But the thing I thought was good was that no one was real nervous. But on that particular touchdown catch, I remember when Greg called the play he basically called a double post. And for whatever reason, LSU went into a man-type coverage and as a wide receiver you feel, everyone wants to be covered man-to-man, so we feel we could beat anyone man-to-man.

But we called the play and lined up and I kind of knew he was going to throw the ball to me because he shifted the coverage over toward Jeff Graham and left me on an island ? and it was just me and him one-on-one. So I knew (Frey) was going to throw me the ball. So my mindset, being a young sophomore in a big game on national TV and everyone was watching back in Atlanta, where I?m from, I was just like, ?You better not drop this ball.?
