Gonzalez, Ugoh back?
2 rookies, both key players for Colts, could return from injuries this week

On recent Mondays, Indianapolis Colts coach Tony Dungy has been guardedly optimistic about the status of injured players.
This time, he sounded downright positive about two of the missing.
"I think we'll have Anthony Gonzalez back and I think we'll have Tony Ugoh back" for Thursday's game in Atlanta, Dungy said.
Gonzalez, a rookie slot receiver, has missed 21/2 games with a hand injury, while Ugoh, a rookie offensive tackle, has been sidelined four games with a neck injury.

Gonzalez's pain eases
Receiver believes he can play against Falcons; Ugoh likely to return
"I'm able to do most things," Gonzalez said Tuesday. "There's nothing that comes up during the course of the day that I say, 'Ow! That hurts.' "
So it was time to try the next thing: catching passes. Gonzalez returned to practice Tuesday to test the left thumb he dislocated three weeks ago against New England. The Indianapolis Colts rookie wide receiver believes he will be ready to play Thursday when the Colts play at Atlanta. His coach, Tony Dungy, believes he will play.
That would be good for the Colts.

Offense finds a big contributor in Gonzalez
Colts rookie receiver enjoys 6-catch, 105-yard game, his best as a pro
By Phillip B. Wilson

ATLANTA -- The Indianapolis Colts' offensive struggles in recent weeks could be tied to an inability to find a steady contributor for injured receiver Marvin Harrison.
Finally, the Colts may have found that fill-in.
Rookie receiver Anthony Gonzalez delivered his best performance as a pro to help awaken a slumbering offense that too often has been forced to rely upon Peyton Manning-to-Reggie Wayne in the passing game. Gonzalez had a game-high six catches for 105 yards as the Colts recovered from a rough start to rout Atlanta 31-13 at the Georgia Dome on Thursday night.
Gonzalez returns ? Gonzalez, a rookie, had the first 100-yard receiving game of his NFL career, catching a team-high six passes for a game-high 105 yards. He had missed the previous two games with a dislocated left thumb.
?It?s hard to explain how helpless you feel when you?re hurt and you can?t play. You work so hard and you?re only guaranteed 16 chances, and [when] some of ?em are taken away from you, it?s pretty disappointing. To come back and be able to contribute to a win was very rewarding for me,? Gonzalez said.
Quarterback Peyton Manning was glad to have him back on the field.
?He?s a guy that?s been here since mini-camp and I have had some repetitions with him. He?s still a young player, but he definitely made a couple of big plays for us,? Manning said. ?That first play [a 35-yard reception at the end of the first quarter] kind of got us going, got us a little momentum.?

Gonzalez on Gonzalez: "Once I realized I was (100 percent), then I was just anxious to get back out there. In the first quarter, I knew I felt pretty good. It was a lot of fun. Winning is a lot of fun. How many times have I watched Thanksgiving day football? Then to finally be a part of it was kind of neat. It was a fun day for me.''
Gonzalez finds place in Peyton's cadre of wideouts
By Tom Pedulla, USA TODAY
USA TODAY continues its Rookie Focus series that examines one of the NFL's most impactful first-year players ? on and off the field ? each week:
Indianapolis Colts president Bill Polian vowed after taking Peyton Manning with the top pick in the 1998 draft to do everything he could to allow him to flourish by protecting him with a sturdy offensive line and by surrounding him with playmakers.
In keeping with a philosophy that was rewarded with Indianapolis' first Super Bowl championship last season, Polian added to his club's offensive riches by taking former Ohio State wide receiver Anthony Gonzalez to close the first round in last April's draft.
Due to an injury to star wide receiver Marvin Harrison, Gonzalez has been asked to do more this season than was initially expected. He has responded with 22 catches for 334 yards, including seven receptions that went for 20-plus yards.
Gonzalez was even complimented by the meticulous Manning for his study habits. That's about as good as life gets for a Colts rookie.
