World Cup - Mexico vs South Africa (Fri 10 ET, ESPN)

Thanks for the support for Bafana Bafana. They are going for 13 straight without a loss after beating Denmark in a friendly this week. My guess is that they may not get to the second round.

If Mandela shows up, all bets are off, but he is unlikely to attend as he is way to frail according to reports.

If I am not mistaken every host nation thus far has made it out of the first round...it will be tough, but the first game will determine a lot for them.

It's being reported that he will not be at the opening ceremonies or today's game.

Reports are conflicting, but it appears that his great grandaughter was returning home from the concert last night with a relative who was driving under the influence. Apparently, the car failed to negotiate a sharp turn and overturned, killing the child. Very sad.

The country is however rocking. Absolutely rocking.

That was the right call on offside. The keeper was out and the player was the last defender...

ESPN's live announcer was saying that it should have counted since there was a defender on the line, but you're exactly right. For those who don't know, Two defensive players are needed to be even or between the guy receiving the ball and the goal line when the pass is initiated.

You'd think that ESPN announcers would understand the offsides rule, wouldn't you. OK, maybe not. :tongue2:

Well so much for my over bet unless we get run 'n shoot soccer in the second half...

Does such a thing exist?

I tried to watch the first half (or whatever they call it). I honestly am trying to watch and see what the appeal is, I mean if its the most popular sport in the world outside the US it has to have something going for it right?

I guess I'm just an ugly American because I don't see it. They spend 90% of the time kicking a ball around a field so goddamned big you can't even see the goals in the edge of the picture let alone expect to see someone actually score.

Then when they get a penalty kick they miss the worlds largest set of open nets so badly the goalie doesn't even move. I think I saw two saves from a goalie where if he didn't stop it the ball was going in.

Is it just these two teams? Do 6-5 soccer matches happen or is this pretty much the highlight of the whole deal?

This game's rather typical. Most games will end up with a score like 2-0, 1-1, or 2-1.

But you haven't seen a penalty kick yet, there have only been free kicks after fouls are called. A PK is spotted on the 12-yard dot in the box and it's just the goalie and the shooter in the box (like shootouts at the end of some games, but those won't occur in the WC until the round of 16). PKs are awarded for fouls or handballs within the box.

The game is an acquired taste if someone didn't grow up with it, but the more one watches, the more it can be appreciated.
