The same teams occupy the first 10 spots, with only minor adjustments in the rankings released Wednesday by soccer's world governing body.
Brazil, the Czech Republic and the Netherlands still top the list. Mexico moved up to fourth, with the Americans dropping into a fifth-place tie with Spain.

I'll take a vBet with those odds as written.

On England to win.

Well, you hit the nail on the head with the last part - host nation = one of favorites to win. The primary exceptions to this rule would be Japan/S.Korea and the United States (before Arena developed the current - ageing - squad).
also factor in the soccer mom/mls and thats what has made soccer a legit sport in the us. 20 years ago it was far from cool to play soccer and mostly the piss poor athletes played it.

I cannot wait for the WC!

Group E is very tough, but I think the USA has as good a chance as anybody in the group to advance.

The squad they're taking to Germany is probably the best (on paper) the US has ever fielded, and I have every confidence in Bruce Arena tactically as a manager.

McBride header seals win for the U.S.

<TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width="100%" border=0><TBODY><TR><TD vAlign=top width=425><!-- begin leftcol -->EAST HARTFORD, Conn. -- Brian McBride scored, DaMarcus Beasley shifted across the field to the right side and Eddie Johnson looked a lot better. </TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>
With a 1-0 victory over Latvia on Sunday night behind McBride's 43rd-minute goal, the United States completed a grueling series of three World Cup warmup games in six days.

"All the talking is done. We'll have to step on the field June 12 and show what we're about," U.S. coach Bruce Arena said.

Following a 1-0 loss to Morocco and a 2-0 victory over Venezuela, the Americans looked sharper and dominated possession until tiring midway through the second half.

American players will be given three days off to return home before the team leaves for Germany on Thursday. They have a closed scrimmage against Angola on June 5 in Hamburg, then meet the Czech Republic in their World Cup opener on June 12 in Gelsenkirchen.

"I think the loss against Morocco was a good wakeup call," said U.S. goalkeeper Kasey Keller, who got his 45th shutout in 93 international games.

Ranked 70th in the world, Latvia failed to qualify for the World Cup after making it to the 2004 European Championship. Keller was rarely tested until a diving stop of Girts Karlsons' header in the 89th minute.

"What we did now isn't that big a deal," Keller said. "I don't want guys thinking, 'All right. We beat Latvia 1-nil, so now we're going to roll over the Czech Republic.' That doesn't quite equate."

Coming off a quarterfinal finish at the 2002 tournament, the United States is in a difficult group with the Czechs, Italy and Ghana. Trying to test players, Arena changed nine starters for the second straight game.

In a possible signal of what he might do in the World Cup opener, he moved Beasley to right midfield from left, and inserted John O'Brien on the left side.

"I'm probably the only left-footed guy that will play the right because I played there all year at PSV. I feel comfortable out there," Beasley said, referring to PSV Eindhoven, his club in the Netherlands.

O'Brien, coming off a lengthy string of injuries, played well until he was replaced by Bobby Convey in the 66th minute.

"He still has a way to go," Arena said. "He's probably not going to be ready to position himself to play 90 minutes on June 12, but we're getting to see the old John again. His match fitness isn't where it needs to be, but physically he appears to be fine."

Landon Donovan was positioned at the top of the midfield diamond behind McBride and Johnson.

Johnson scored seven goals in seven World Cup qualifiers but missed much of last year with a toe injury. He has struggled to regain his sharpness and failed to convert several opportunities against the Latvians, just missing or getting called offsides.

"We've had a tough time with him over the last five months, and I think he's starting to break out of it now," Arena said. "Although he didn't get a goal tonight, I thought he had some real good moments."

McBride could be paired up front with Josh Wolff against the Czechs or Arena could go with Johnson, who had four of the 16 American shots against Latvia.

"I was doing things that I did back when I was scoring goals," Johnson said. "I was getting in behind the defenders, getting dangerous in the box, getting in crosses, making those runs in the back, holding the ball up, bringing other players into the game."

Only the U.S. defense seems set, with Eddie Lewis at left back, Eddie Pope and Oguchi Onyewu in the middle and Steve Cherundolo at right back. Captain Claudio Reyna, who plans to resume training in a few days after a right hamstring strain heals, is likely to be in defensive midfield.

McBride scored from 6 yards off a cross from Cherundolo, sending the ball off the fingertips of leaping goalkeeper Aleksandrs Kolinko and into the net at the far post. With his 30th goal in 92 international appearances -- his first since connecting in a 1-0 qualifying win against Trinidad and Tobago at East Hartford last Aug. 17 -- McBride moved within four goals of Eric Wynalda, the American career scoring leader.

McBride was playing with a large welt on the left side of his forehead, incurred when Genadjis Soloncins butted heads with him in the 18th minute.

"For McBride, that's nothing," Arena said. "He's had a lot worse."

Game Notes
MFs Reyna (strained right hamstring) and Clint Dempsey (sore back) didn't dress, and D Carlos Bocanegra was suspended following his ejection against Venezuela. ... The U.S. team wore special edition red "Don't Tread on Me" jerseys with a 1950s-era crest.

Rooney scan pushed forward

I really, really hope he doesn't make it. Not because I don't like England, which I don't, but I want Walcott to get as much international exposure as possible.
As most folloers of the England World Cup squad know, Rooney will be available, most likely from the Bench for their opening match against Paraguay.

Meanwhile England's adorable fans get their first taste of the German police :tongue2:

Its almost as if this was a rivalry game.
Frankfurt square showdown

English, German fans separated by helmeted police

Posted: Friday June 9, 2006 3:58PM; Updated: Friday June 9, 2006 4:25PM

FRANKFURT (Reuters) -- Thousands of England fans took over a central Frankfurt square on Friday and helmeted police moved in to keep them away from German supporters as the two sides began to taunt each other.
Though boisterous, the mood had been good-natured as fans played football in the sunshine. But the atmosphere changed when hundreds of German fans arrived after watching their team beat Costa Rica 4-2 in a match shown on a giant screen floating on the nearby River Main.
England fans chanted "10 German bombers" and other songs referring to World War Two while German supporters waved their national flags.
Around 100 police wearing white helmets with visors moved into the square at around 8:30 p.m. (1830 GMT) to keep the two sides apart.
Earlier on the banks of the Main, an estimated 40,000 mostly German fans gathered to watch the host nation's opening victory.
Fans straining to catch a glimpse of the huge screens in the river sat on the roofs of riverside apartments or in the trees.
Two English police officers who are working in Germany as advisers mingled with fans and posed for photos.
Some 30,000 England fans are expected to descend on Germany's fifth largest city where their team play Paraguay on Saturday.
The English are trying to show they have cleaned up their act after violence at previous tournaments in Europe.
"It's a party atmosphere, it's a carnival, the Germans have made everybody welcome," said Cristian Gladdish, from Canterbury, brandishing an inflatable World War Two Spitfire.
One German World Cup volunteer Andrea Filsinger, 31, said she thought England fans should find some alternative songs to sing as older people would be offended while others stood and watched from a distance.
"There's loads of English here," said Frankfurt resident Sebastien Roth. "Like the stereotype some are fat and drinking a lot of beer, but they're not aggressive."
British and German authorities say they have worked at an unprecedented level to ensure the World Cup passes off smoothly.
On Thursday, a Greek national was arrested after pulling a knife on an England fan in an isolated incident in a pub.
Around 5,000 Paraguay fans are expected to be at Saturday's match. "We're very happy to be here," said Pedro Vera from Ascuncion. "There are too many England fans, but we will try to make as much noise as them."
To make matters a little easier (I guess in case your average skinhead can't speaka the German) English bobbies are being used overseas, in uniform, for the first time.

Hopefully they don't cause too much of a riot and have plenty to be happy about.

In other news Germany put four goals past Costa Rica, but local fans are less than happy with the Americanized side (lots of Bruce Arena influence) giving up two goals in the opener.

Ecuador shocked Poland, coming out on top 2-0.

I've started hearing it again from the sports media, and I'm tired of it...

"Ecuador beat Poland 2-0... but who cares about soccer?"

I've heard that kind of thing a couple times today when they were reporting the scores, and it's pissing me off. Not because they don't like soccer - but because I don't want to hear their shit. I don't care what these people think, and quite honestly, I'm glad that the same people who spend hours of airtime discussing the NFL in freakin' JUNE don't like soccer. Just shut up, report the scores and news, and let me enjoy the matches!

Yes, it's kinda a big deal because ESPN/ABC have stepped up to actually bring decent coverage of the event this time around. Some people seem to be offended by this development, for some reason. Don't worry, ESPN will be bringing back Skip Bayless, card games, and re-runs of Stump the Schwab in a month.

When Eriksson's team takes the field in Frankfurt On Saturday, the 12 squad players who do not start will put on their kit and sit on the bench.

Even Rooney will be there in his England shirt despite having no chance of taking the field against Paraguay On Saturday.
...
He's not expected to be back until the knockout stages.

The officiating in that match was disgraceful, especially from the linesmen. Though Poland still should've been able to come away with something.

Nope, you're right.

That call was bad, but Poland's disallowed goal early in the 2nd will probably go down as one of the worst of the tournament. Can't really expect much from the Asian refs though.

Not at all unexpected. Here's a snippet from an article from the Philadelphia Daily News.

Frank Bertucci said:
Expect refereeing to be questionable. FIFA’s insistence on inclusion means that referees from Benin, Egypt, Morocco, Saudi Arabia and Singapore will work games. Working African Nations or Asian Cup games are not the same as working two games per week in Europe or Brazil or Argentina.

Any thoughts on why they would do this? Concern that using solely Euro refs would give the appearance of biased reffing?

Seems pretty dim to sacrifice quality for an appearance of impartiality, if that is the case.
