Great play by Beasley setting up the goal. He went past 3 defenders and crossed the ball perfectly.

The PK awarded Ghana was an absolute sham. Onyewu was standing just inside the top of the box, and headed the ball out with one arm brushing against the opponent.

No way that was a penalty. There's a thing called the "spirit of the rule"... Penalties are awarded for fouls inside the box not because they are inside the box - but rather because a foul inside the box usually denies a scoring chance. What Ghana had there was not a scoring chance, and therefore did not deserve a penalty. Plus, it was a dive.

I won't say the refs have totally screwed the US though. They've been bad, but the US has continually allowed themselves to be screwed through mistakes and uninspired play. What was Bocanegra doing popping that ball up in the box anyway? Give up the throw in! That's the first thing you teach youngsters on defense - don't play the ball back to the center in your own end.

Hey... one thing...

Lets give Ghana their props... I mean.. they beat the Czechs... crushed them really... and they could have come in to this game flat... been happy to just have won a World Cup Match... and they're advancing out of the toughest group in the tournament...

Can't feel bad when the other team wins resulting in a moment of complete utter joy for an entire nation and an escape from problems that we will never understand or experience.

Tibs, you're always looking for the silver lining when the rest of us want to wallow in our misery.

I need to change out my contacts as I cannot believe what I am reading. :wink2: Excellent point as to how important these games can be to many countries. I wonder if the Dow Jones and Nasdaq will drop here today? Probably not due to this game.

Good point.

However (not to complain), I have no problem with soccer, but I have never seen a softer sport than soccer, and so many bullshit injuries. I mean I know Ghana was just trying to milk time off of the clock, and that's fine with me because that would have probably been our same strategy. However, I can't stand the fact that the refs were calling some pretty questionable fouls, especially in the closing fifteen minutes.

I couldn't care less about what's going on in their country. They're dirty, diving, injury-faking, time-wasting cunts. End of. I came into this World Cup thinking that sliding in with two feet, constantly kicking people in the ankles, and throwing yourself on the ground without being touched was against the rules, but obviously not.

Oh well. At least Italy advanced.

If you set-aside the absurd drama-queen antics (writhing on the floor and what-not) there are strong parallels between the advantageous drawing of fouls in soccer and in at least one other sport I can think of. Basketball.

(Just so you understand, I am fully in favor of returning the game to a more robust format. And, if the soccer world wants to get oscar-winning dives and writhes of the pitch they can - but it needs a change in the policy by which the games are policed, one that makes the consequences of fouling less severe. In other words 180-degrees removed from what Blatter wants to see.)
