Working with Michigan fans..

souL

I.bulldoze
I work at Red Robin when I'm in between contracts, and one day I'm picking up a check and I see someone I work with in a Michigan shirt and hat. It just so happened to be about mid-December, so I walk up to him and say 'hey Jason, 37-21.' He just looked at me kinda funny.
Me: "Don't tell me you don't know what I'm talking about. 37-21!'

Jason: "Ya ya ya, shut up. (blah blah blah something about Michigan)"

Me: "Hey, I sure liked Braylon Edwards's last play in the regular season... pretty much a microcosm of his career, no?"

The ribbing continued for 10 minutes or so... and now he no longer has a name, I simply call him '37-21'. It's kinda catching on, I have other people doing it too.

I also had a class with a UM fan the term of The Game; I only noticed because he wore all his *gag* maize *gag* and blue on the Friday before The Game. He noticed me almost right away, as well. We made a little bet, and I got to burn his hat .

Interested to hear some stories of other people's run-ins with... those people.

My experience has been tolerable. michigan grads are much more reasonable than the guys who are fans but did not go to school there. They are the ones who are just blindly loyal. I had one storm out of my office the other day when I reminded him michigan has not won a consensus national championship in like 50 years. If you add things in like "No national championship since The Great Deal (or the atom was split or the forward pass)" they really seem to like it  Just remind them that Nebraska won it in '97.

I had more fun with the bet I had with my boss this year on the MSU-OSU game. He had to wear an OSU sweatshirt the Monday after the game and my assistant took some nice photos of him. Well, I just happened to email to people we knew throughout Michigan including one local reporter. Well, it ended up in the paper and he had no idea until people starting mentioning it to him. A couple of people mentioned it to me just last week.

I work with a number of Penn State fans, and rarely cross paths with UMers. Safe to say the Lions' faithful haven't had much to say in recent years...or at least not since the 29-27 collapse at PSU in 2001.

For me, beating PSU is second to beating Michigan.

Think back to the frigid first days of a fledgling 2003. It's Jan 2nd, and it's snowing. Clad in Scarlet and Gray, I go to the lovely East Lansing Meijer to procure foodness for the big fiesta bowl. As I make my cheerful way to the exit, what do my eyes behold, but a m*ch*g*n fan, decked out in his urine-hued regailia. I quickly racked my brain... what do I say? <SCUMMER approaches he as me at sneers>... AHA! Inspiration!!

I remove two massive bags of TOSTITOS from the cart, and with my cheeriest smile, proceed to wave them at the poor, deluded, piss-wearer. His sneer is replaced by shock, followed by slack-jawed incomprehension...

...

...

And the payoff is worth the wait, as... about a minute later, he realizes that the Buckeyes are, indeed, playing in the Fiesta Bowl for the natioinal championship. His consternation evident, the poor shitagainder slinks away, his proverbial tail between his bandy little legs, never to pester me again.

That's a sucker's bet if I've ever seen one. If I had that kind of money (or vCash, for that matter) to throw around, I'd give anybody the one team they want and take the rest. I'd even give someone USC!

being that i live in columbus i dont come across too many. however, the ones you cross are the most annoying as they are mostly jackasses that sport michigan gear just to be different and draw attention to themselves.

Yeah, I was in the grocery store last night, and saw some fool and his fool g/f or wife all geared up in the ass colors of scUM. They had a little baby, as well. I looked at the kid, and asked them why they would ever traumatize an infant by wearing scUM colors...I got the typical "michigan rules, dude" comeback from him, so I did the only thing I could: I took their kid and ran. No way am I going to let some poor kid be raised by scummers.

I used to work in Plymouth, MI, which is a western suburb of Detroit and is about 20 min away from ann arbor. Needless to say, the weasels were everywhere. Unfortunately, this was during the last of the Cooper years, so I didn't have much to say.

Now, I work with loads of Penn St. fans and one very vocal michigan fan. The Penn St. guys are easy these days.... The michigan guy and I have a standing bet that involves wearing the winner's jersey after THE GAME. I got stuck a year ago, but now that I'm 3-1, I've offered to buy him an OSU jersey so he wouldn't have to borrow mine every year.

I am the only Buckeye fan in my office, which has between 150-200 people. Even people who don't care about Big Ten football give me shit. I just remind them of A) our recent w/l record, and B) the Championship.

I only work closely with one scUM guy, and he is pretty cool. We have a standing bet for every November. He gives me crap about the NCAA stuff, I give him crap about spanking it on the porch...

The whole relationship stays really civil considering.

I have alot of friends up in Mich. And believe it or not they are all good people.

We have a great time fucking with weach other over the rivalry and Ieven have about 10 scuM State fans on my side.

Once a year about 20 of them come down to a golf outing I put on and Once a year I go to Mich to a golf outing they put on. This year was exceptionaly good and bad at the same time A good friend of mine and I have a on going bet about "the game". Winner of the game buys a hat for the loser to wear at both golf outings, so this year I had to wear a scUM hat at both outings. The only good thing was the scUM vs Notre Shame game was the day of the Mich outing so I had alot of fun watching the domers whoop up on the wolverwenies and then sat back and listened to them moan as Nuge kicked the 50yd+ game winner over Marshall.

So this year I buy the hat. I picked it up while in San Antonio for the bowl game.

A big ass, bright red foam cowbay hat that I have promptly attached stickers, patches and flashing lights to. My outing is June 11th and if I ever figure out how to post pics on the internet I will gladly share with the group :)

Gee, I can't seem to recall, either.

Actually, I live in Ohio and work in PA so I have to sneak across the border every night.

I love hearing "fans" make cracks about us heading for probation, because anyone who has actually followed the facts of the case (i.e. dug deeper than the ESPN soundbites) knows probation is NOT likely to happen.

This, of course, will make it all the sweeter when reality bites them on their collective ass.
