OK, so my wife and I stayed in Metairie - about 5 miles from the game. We woke up very late on gameday (due to Bourbon street the night before) and were pretty slow getting out the door. When we came back from breakfast, two fellow Buckeyes are having an animated discussion with the desk clerk about a cab. It turns out there was an "at least" three hour wait for a cab! This would put us downtown just in time to go to the game and not much else... especially if the cab was late or didn't show. (They don't like to drive out to the 'burbs to pick people up when they're passing fares on the way).
Not to worry, I picked this hotel knowing it was on a bus line, so plan-B was always to take the bus in to the game. The clerk tells us they run every 15 minutes and one simple connection we're at the game. My wife and I part company with our new friends as they head to the bus stop and I figure that's the end of the story, but 30 minutes later when we walk to the bus stop... our new friends are still there! They've called the bus authority and it turns out this bus only runs in the evenings and the first won't be by for 3 1/2 hours!
At this point we're calculating how long it would take to walk. Every car driving by is screaming "Tiger-bait!" at the top of their lungs (even little kids BTW). Then - a minivan pulls up. The window rolls down and the driver leans over to yell "Go Bucks!" Here's the kicker... it was Woody Hayes!!!
I'm sure some of you on here know (or even are) "Woody" aka Roger. Woody was already my hero, but now Roger (and his lovely wife) are too. They graciously agreed to take all four of us to the game (I'm not sure he wanted to mind you... but he did it just the same!) He then picked up some friends who were surprised to see us, but almost immediately we all talked like we've known each other our whole lives.
Funny thing is, he drives just like I'd imagine Woody to... We got there in record time on a very crowded I-10! Classic stuff!
I know there's some other guys out there a bit older than myself who can literally say that Woody Hayes 'drove them to a NC game'... but this was a special moment for myself, my wife, and two fellow Buckeyes.
I just wanted to share this as I have never been more proud to be a Buckeye! Woody would have been proud of Roger as he "Paid it forward!" and took what could have been a seriously bad situation for us and made it the highlight of the trip.
Thanks Roger... Thanks Woody.
