Hughes to lead Buckeyes' volleyball renaissance

By JOE ARNOLD ? Sports Writer ? May 14, 2008

CARROLL - Ashley Hughes spent her freshman year at Ohio State diligently working and learning everything she could from the Buckeyes' senior All-American volleyball player Marisa Main.

The following season Hughes, a Bloom-Carroll graduate, eased her way into Ohio State's starting lineup and played 26 games and started five matches.
Now, heading into her junior season, Hughes has earned the respect and acknowledgment of her teammates and a new coach. She was named co-captain of the Buckeyes on May 7.
"We're just trying to fill some really big shoes and do the best job we can," Hughes said.
She and fellow junior-to-be Chelsea Noble were tabbed by new coach Geoff Carlston as Ohio State's on- and off-court leaders.
"We are probably the only program in the nation that has two sophomores as captains, but the reality is they are two of our most experienced players on the team," Carlston said in a statement released by the university.
"They have the respect of their teammates because they reflect the hard work, competitiveness and selflessness that are necessary components to becoming a championship team."
Hughes, a setter, was third on the team in assists this past season (218) and averaged 8.4 assists per game. She and Noble were named co-captains after a players' vote. Carlston had the final say.
"I'm just glad he sees where we really want to go," Hughes said. "He sees our effort and our motivation. It's good to know you have the support of the team behind you."

Got selected for jury duty for the first time ever this week. Sat there all morning before they dismissed me, just in time to watch some women's volleyball.

Brazil vs USA - our girls won but the South Americans are hotter. :p

Japan vs Italy - not up to the standard set by the first match, overall, but each has something to offer. The Italians appear poised to win but the chatter among the Japanese girls is awesome.
