I had to go through my 4-hour CDL re-cert a few weeks ago...

Got to see the famous story of the school bus driver who sent two kids off of the bus to lift the crossing gate so the bus could beat the train...

About three months ago a brother of a friend of mine and his uncle tried to beat a train.. The brother died when his head hit the cross piece of the telphone pole the train drove the pickup up. The uncle died crushed between the door and the chassis. Only the cab of the pickup survived, no bed , no engine section.
Sad stuff... makes you wonder

I hope the CDL issuers tied down his stupid ass to the same tracks...

I'd say the race was a tie.

i disagree. the suv was likely the winner as it was ahead of the train... well, kinda wrappted around the front. but definitely infront of the train somewhat.

No, I wouldn't ever attempt it, but I don't understand how people actually get hit by trains. It's not like trains are capable of sudden bursts of acceleration. If you're trying to decide whether to beat it, how can you so badly misjudge speed and distance? The car has to accelerate and travel about fifty feet and the train has to cover some distance (presumably at least two or three times the distance across the tracks or no one would ever try it) at a steady rate of speed.

Someone (Smithlabs?) please explain to me how a car (other than the apocryphal stall-on-the-tracks) is ever hit by a train.

Was watching Greatest Train Wrecks or something like that, hosted by that retired sheriff who hosts all the police chase videos. Anyway, throughout the show they kept showing this as a teaser, always stopping just before impact, and at the end of the show they still didn't show the impact. So, I Googled it and here it is:
