Wisconsin Badgers (Official Thread)

Lucky for them their QB is real good.
The announcers were praising Mertz for having a great game after the Iowa win. His stat line:

11 of 22 for 110 yards and 1 TD, 0 picks. Passing efficiency of 104.7; and 3 rushes for 2 yards.

So less than 4.5 yards per play on his 25 plays. But no turnovers for a change, so let’s rave about it!

Wisconsin QB Graham Mertz asked about Badgers' pursuit of Caleb Williams

“It’s the coach’s job to find the best player,” Mertz said, via Zach Heilprin of The Zone Madison. “What am I gonna say? ‘Oh, I deserve this.’ I don’t deserve anything. I’ve got to prove it every day, prove it’s my job. That’s what I’m going to do. That’s what I’ve always done.”

Just sayin': Hey, Mertz has the right attitude here.

It takes talent for a program to be he same for decades and never evolve, even after changing coaches. All the talk of getting Mertz and him being so highly rated in HS, he looks like hot garbage!
They’re going to send another talented RB to the NFL, and a bunch of lineman, and Mertz will be coaching or selling insurance by the time he leaves college.

Rinse repeat

I don't think you can pin this on Mertz.
FG went 0/2.
Cundiff fumbled in the RZ.
OLine with holding every other play.
Wisconsin has an identity -- that RT got worked over today.

I hear you, but Mertz was 18-31 227 2TDs INT, that’s pretty pedestrian for a program who bragged endlessly about him when they got him, and ran off their former starter in Coan, who played no different than Mertz. It just seems like since Russell Wilson, and even prior, they’re QBs are always just “meh”, and the RBs must always bail them out and put up video game numbers in order for Wisky to ever be competitive and field a competent offense

Aside from Wilson, their QBs dating back to the mid-90s have topped out as solid game managers. Mertz was supposed to buck that trend and he's been mostly bad. I think almost all of those QBs have been 3* guys. I seem to recall them landing one other 4* kid who could never even land the starting gig a while back...can't recall his name.

Since 2000, Wiscy has had three 4-Star QB recruits besides Mertz, who was the highest 4-star among them.

2008 class - Curt Phillips: threw 95 passes for 577 yards in 10 games in 2012-13 with 5 TDS and 4 picks

2012 class - Bart Houston: threw 192 passes for 1540 yards in 26 games from 2013-16 with 9 TDs and 5 picks. He had 5 starts in 2016, including wins in the Lambeau opener against LSU and the Cotton Bowl win over Western Michigan.

2014 class - D.J. Gillins: never played there, transferred to JuCo and ended up at UTSA
