Around the Big Ten: No place like home for Fresno

Ohio State isn't the only Big Ten team putting its national ranking -- and the prestige of its conference -- on the line against another ranked team out West tonight.
No. 10 Wisconsin, regarded as the Big Ten's second-best team behind the Buckeyes, plays at No. 21 Fresno State, which opened its season by traveling across the country and winning at Rutgers 24-7 on Sept. 1.
This time, Fresno gets to stay home.
Wisconsin will be the first Big Ten team to visit 41,000-seat Bulldog Stadium, and The Fresno Bee rated it the biggest home game in the stadium's history. Coach Pat Hill said it's certainly the biggest in his 12 seasons at the school.
"I think it's great for our fans to finally have a (big) game in their hometown," Hill told the newspaper. "They don't have to go to UCLA. They don't have to go to USC. We don't have to have people fly and go see Notre Dame. They can go right here to Bulldog Stadium and watch the hometown team play a Big Ten powerhouse."

Even though I have pride in my program, and somewhat this year's team also....I wouldn't touch this game with a 10 foot pole. The Badgers will need to overcome a lot of built in advantages for Fresno State which have nothing to do with football.

First, the game won't begin until 9:30 PM Central, and will most likely culminate around 1:00 AM. So basically they'll be playing the entire second half at a time in the day when they're usually asleep. My biggest fear is they play like they're asleep. Just like they did last season at UNLV, which started at 9:00 PM Central. And similarly to how a superior Cal team is getting thumped at Maryland, playing at 9 in the morning Pacific.

Second, the projected temperature at game time is 90 degrees. As Jonathan Mayo formerly of Tennessee pointed out, Big Ten teams are built to play in the cold, and the majority of our roster is comprised of northerners who aren't accustomed to those kind of conditions.

Finally, Fresno State insisted on using WAC officials in tonight's game. Watch and see if their allegiance in conjunction with pressure from hostile fans creates a few questionable calls in the Bulldogs' favor.

If Wisconsin wins it will be a testament to how talented and determined this year's version truly is.

WAC officials just saved FSU's ass on an incomprehensibly bad overturn of a clear fumble. :shake:

Next play Fresno goes 63 yards to the Badger 9...

It would be 16,20, or 21 to 7 instead of 13-10 right now. People say complaining about officials is whining, but quite frankly they can have as much of an impact on the game as they desire. How did what they saw constitute indisputable visual evidence? That's why Pat Hill insisted on getting his homer officials. Because they are employed by the conference and are company men.

Look, I understand that with the speed of a bang bang play that refs will make mistakes....but that is why we have replay. To fix that. To make sure the right call is made. Not to give the home refs a chance to make a homer call. That is just downright thievery. No wonder nobody wants to play at Fresno. Karma says Wiscy wins anyway, and if not, there had better be an outcry the likes of Oklahoma vs Oregon. RIDICULOUS.
