Windows 8 - Anyone Using It

  • Anyone utilizing Windows 8? If so,. what do you think of it? I bought a new laptop a couple of weeks ago and it came with 8 on it. I really wanted 7 but couldn't find the computer with the features and functions I wanted with 7 on it.

So far, I am kind of ambivalent to 8. I don't know that I like it or don't like it. I know I haven't found certain things I am used to in 7 like the start menu. Apps seem to load differently and sometimes go to or don't go to the "desktop". I pretty much pin what I want to the task bar so I don't have to go searching for it.

Reluctantly switched to 8.1 this week because I am migrating a dozen servers from bare metal over to Hyper-V Server 2012; and the only way to properly work with Hyper-V is to have Windows 8.

I'd put it off for months but finally relented when 8.1 retail dropped in my MSDN account. OK so far. Biggest annoyance is Windows throwing me to Metro whenever I open a PDF or an image. Gotta work on that when I have the time.

I'm probably one of the very few that actually likes W8. I like the use of apps. I think for the most part, people who are new to W8 are not willing to learn the system and the niceties it has. People want to see a Start button and go on. Move the cursor to the bottom left of the screen and you can get to the Start menu, right click the Start menu and you get to everything you need. And if you don't want to constantly right click to get there, right click the app and move it to your Start menu.

It's a really neat idea. The only issue I see with W8 is the compatibility with some of the older games. But, like I said, once I learned how to use it, it's a breeze!

There are a ton more issues than just games. I have a situation now where I need to have a check scanner installed at one of my properties, and due to the fact that the new computers have Win 8, the scanner will not work. I now have to either find, or program myself, a patch to allow this scanner to work (which is critical to the property). Microsoft pushed this out without fully testing the compatibility to older peripherals that many use in conjunction with their computers. I could understand if Win 8 was strictly for tablets, but the fact that this is being put on all types of computers makes this OS a huge turd from Microsoft. I would have to say that Vista gave me less problems than 8 currently is.

    Agree 100%!
Win8 may be fine for mobile(it's target) but for regular PC use, the suckage level is right up there with Vista. I try to avoid Windows as much as possible and primarily use Linux, but some things just don't work anywhere but Windows. Hopefully, Microsoft will continue their trend of having every other OS suck( Me, vista, 8) and have the follow up be very good. (Win98,WinXP,Win7)

I really hate 8. The more I use it, the more I triple pumpkin hate it. I have issues with Chrome working now. Firefox works fine, but I do a lot of SaaS system stuff where I need to know how things work in multiple browsers. Chrome just stopped connecting to the network and I have no idea why. I have tried to uninstall, which is a pain to find, and reinstall with no success. Just now after rebooting all my apps disappeared from the Desktop screen. What the pumpkin is with this stuff anyway.

    ^^^^EDIT^^^^^
I just rebooted for about the 5th time and this time just did a restart instead of a full shutdown. Chrome was the only app showing on my desktop and when I clicked on it, it finally worked and magically all my other apps started reappearing....:hoke:

Embarrassingly during a presentation with a client yesterday Windows 8.1 decided it was going to install itself. I did everything I could to stop the system from rebooting and launching into this but it went ahead and did it anyway......PUMPKIN MICROSOFT!!!!!!!

I'm primarely a Linux user as well. Win8 has some nice memory management upgrades. Windows 8 interface is nice, when you are using the legacy desktop. Metro just stinks for desktop use.

Until I changed some settings, mine would suddenly inform me it had installed an update, and was going to shut down to restart...whether I wanted it to or not. I frown on this type of activity from a machine. I've had the window pop up a few times asking me if I want to install 8.1. I'm in no hurry. Not crazy about 8.

I hate that MS sets it up that way (Win7 and Vista did this to me on my desktop as well) ... but at work, that's largely a SysAdmin issue.
I'm not in IT anymore, but Update behavior should be controlled via Group Policies -- I'd venture to go so far as to say Updates should be done directly by the IT Dept. pushing them out over the Network during off-hours or, if it's loaned out, have you bring it in for periodic updates.

In general, I've noticed MS stop supporting peripheral devices over the years. Back in XP and Vista, MS supported a lot of bluetooth functionality -- but now you have to search around for drivers.

I never understood why Vista got such a bad rap. I kept it on my desktop until only recently, and I've been running Windows 7 on my laptop for 3 years. If you ask me, Windows 7 just feels like Vista repackaged with a better toolbar. The rest of the UI seems exactly the same, pretty much all the same features. Haven't used Win8 yet, but I was under the impression it was built more for touch screen devices.
