Wie playing with the guys

B1, great point - Pressel is actually the number 1 ranked female amateur in the country, not Wie.
However, Wie has the potential to compete against the men moreso than Pressel.

But what will competing against the men get her ? If her ultimate goal is to compete on the men's tour, she better also get a side job to feed her family (when she has one), because she'll never make enough money playing with the 'big boys'. Say she does make a cut, she's still going to finish at the low end and make what $3000, and that's IF she makes a cut.

She's never going to be able to consistenly play with the guys because, as good as she is, there will always be at least 60 men that will be better than her week in and out.

The novelty will wear off and she'll just be another golfer stuggling to make the cut each week.

Just make the cut in a mens tourney to prove you can do it(she will), then move to the womens tour to earn your living.

at the end of the day she is nothing more than a side show freak. is she a good golfer? she wouldn't have made the cut if she wasn't. but even if she wins outright and stomps all the big names into dust she will still be looked at more as a chick playing with the men than being respected for her ability regardless of her gender. if thats what she wants, more power to her.

the double standard however is bs. woman can play in the PGA but men can't play in the WPGA. don't even try to feed me some "well it sin't the MPGA" bs. we all know what it is so don't even try. you want to open all golf to both genders? fine by me, i could care less. but it doesn't work one way. im so sick and tired of the "so called" minority groups getting their cakes and eating it to. you want things to be fair and to drop all discrimiantion regardless of the reason? fine! but it has to be across the board. none of this "only where it suits me" bs.

I don't think she should be competing against PGA pros right now. but i think in 5 years she could be, and i think that obviously is her goal.
And, no she won't have to worry about $ whenever she turns pro, becuase she will make tens of milions a year in endorsements. She will, however, have a very hard time keeping her PGA tour card - if she ever earns one. I don't see this as a bad thing at all, as long as she qualifies to play on tour just like everybody else.
I think the PGA tour should be the home of the world's best golfers, no matter what their gender is. Whether Michelle Wie ever becomes one of the best golfers in the world, as opposed to one of the best women golfers in the world, definitely remains to be seen.

Just walked 9 holes with Michelle

Guys,

Those of you that are scoffing at her game or her long term goal of playing in The Masters are out of your minds or have other issues that I won't address. After walking 9 with her and her opponent Will Claxton (last year Publinx quarterfinalist and -6 this year through 2 rounds of medal play, I can assure you that she is not sculpting a game for the LPGA, but rather for much bigger things. I was shocked today by her length and accuracy off the tee, her varied shot making, her touch, and her mid to long range putting. She may never win on the PGA Tour, but I will not be shocked if she qualifies on her own in the future (4-5 years). She is absolutely not a "freak show".

By the way, she went mano a mano with Claxton in the rain, made a horrible choice on 17 tee, but got up and down from a God-awful bunker position to be even after 17. She then pured one from 170 to 15 feet on 18, before draining it to win. I'm impressed. You should be, too.

By the way, my OSU national championship golf umbrella was a hit on the course...even got to abuse a couple M..... fans.

Go Bucks!

I am in total agreement about women on the pga when men are not allowed to play in the lpga. But at the same time what man would not get made fun of for trying to play with the women? How many jokes would be made up just for that guy? At the same time if she wants to play with the guys let her she will never prove anything other than she can beat the some of the male amateurs out there, hell she could kick my ass all day long on the course. Let her be your just afraid of losing a little bit of your masculinity and most of you lost that when queer eye for the straight guy came out. I bet she plays in a couple of events in her lifetime but face the truth that's more that any of us will probably play in and she's not even the #1 womens golfer.

Men can't play on the LPGA b/c it's the Ladies Professional Golf Association.

However there's nothing that designates the PGA is for men only in name.

It's the Not the MPGA just the Professional Golfers' Association.

Meaning that women are eligible.

I don't see it as bad at all either. If she can hit from the tips and compete, then she should play there.

I wonder how long the sponsers will stay with her
if shes misses more cuts than she makes?

She's a great golfer, but against the men she just another John Elliott. Her scoring avg in PGA tournaments this years is 72.5, good enough for 186th place. She's also playing in hand picked events that cater to her strengths.

I just don't see her ever being a serious challenger to the top 100 players. Sure, she may have a good tournament in the Ottumwa Open, when the top 20 players are not there, but yes, she is a sideshow when it comes to competing on the PGA tour.

come on guys if she can play then she can play. Exemptions are crap but if she earns a spot then why not give it to her. the pga is supposed to showcase the greatest golfers in the world. This 15 year old kid has come closer to making a cut than Tiger ever did at that age. To exclude her because she has tits is insane. Its not like we are talking about football or something where she could get hurt. Who are you trying to protect here? As for perfecting her game on the lpga, pga, or amature circuit i don't know, I am not a golfer. I do know that she has tons of tallent already and plenty of time to get even better.

I am not arguing that she is not more of a side show right now - i agree with you, she is only being invited by the sponsors because of her ability to draw crowds, not her chances of winning.
i am talking about 5 years from now, where she will be entering her peak years physically and mentally, and will have tons more experience by then as well.
she will not be averaging 72.5 then.
She may never win an event with a top quality field - she may not be able to ever earn a tour card, or keep it for long if she does - but I think she has proven that she certainly has enough potential to try to make it on the PGA tour. the guys she is beating in this tournament certainly have tour aspirations!

BTW, shw won her 2nd round match this morning, 6&5.

I know match play is not a very good barometer for success, but what does it do to an amateur's confidence (and aspirations), to get 6&5'd by a 15 year old girl? Ouch.

I guess my only question is what is she hoping to accomplish: making a cut or actually playing on the tour in the future?

Hey, I'm all for her if she makes it and is competitive.

possible masters invitation......or not

every article that I have read says that the winner of this tournament is "usually" invited to the Masters. I wouldn't be surprised if Wie wins it and old Hootie doesn't invite her. That would crack me up.

Hootie isn't stupid. He knows all the extra publicity that will result if she is in it.
