Wie playing with the guys

DEBuckeye

It ain't easy, bein' cheesy.
What's the deal with Michelle Wie trying so hard to play with the guys in a PGA event? What the hell is she trying to prove? After missing the cut at the John Deere Classic (thank God) she's now going to enter a MEN'S amateur event to hopefully qualify for The Masters.

It's like she's on some chip-on-the-shoulder crusade to prove that girls are as good as boys. That's old and tired- give it a rest!! Why doesn't she concentrate on beating some of the best LPGA players and winning some of those events? When she can consistently beat Annika Sorenstam, then she can move on to conquer the boys.

She's a great golfer, I'm not arguing that, but I hope she gets put in her place playing with the guys.

One other thing- this is one of the worst double-standard situations ever. If a guy decided that he wanted to play a few LPGA events to get in and beat up some of the women, he'd be either A) denied, or B) made a laughingstock. But if a girl wants to play with the guys, she's a "heroine". Bullshit.

Its not bullshit, its life.
Golf is an individual sport, if she as an individual is good enough to play with the guys, let her.
If she is good enough to qualify, who gives a flying crap what her sex is?

Any woman who can qualify should play with the guys, no sponsor exemptions either..

I will reserve judgement until she actually wins a tournament. I know she is only 15 but I think she is going about it all wrong. She should be honing her skills on the amateur circuit and playing in few LPGA events on sponsers exceptions to get used to the competition. Once she dominates on the LPGA then try to beat the men. Annika is the #1 womens golfer in the world and she picked an event that suited her game perfectly and still didn't make the cut.

This brings up an interesting point. Does making a cut actually mean anything? Tiger Woods made 100+ cuts in a row. Is he judged by this or by the majors he has won.

If Wei or any other female makes a cut and finishes 50th in a tournament, will that be considered a success? I beleive so.

I would love for a male golfer to try to get into a LPA event to see what happens. I'm sure they would enjoy the 380-420 yard par 4's instead of the 440-460 yard ones they play on the pga tour.

Part of her reasoning is that she learns more by playing against the men. That has to be weighed against her learning how to actually win against top competition.

For those of you who feel a need to criticize how a 15 year-old female athlete is planning her athletic schedule, I'm sure she cares deeply about your opinions.

DEB - this is a tournament she had already enterd and qualified for - you have to win or place high enough in a sectional qualifier (against all men) in order to make it to the tournament at Shaker Run. Also, there is a double standard, but I think she should be allowed to play on the highest level she can qualify to play on. the LPGA is the tour with the exclusionary clause in it not allowing men. the PGA tour has no sush exclusions. she is not on a chip-on-the shoulder crusade to prove anything - she just wants to compete at the highest level she can. She learns more by playing with the men - just like Annika learns alot by playing with Tiger down in Florida.
the only concern I have is that she needs to go through the same qualifying standards as anyone else if she wants to play full time on the PGA tour.

Tlangs - if you are a pro golfer, making the cut certainly means something - otherwise, you don't get paid that week! As an amateur, her making the cut would just be yardstick used to validate whether or not she belongs.

Also, if the men played the exact same course as the women (same yardage, pin locations, rough, etc.) the scores would be ridiculously low. (think a 59 or 60 every day of the tournament) That would prove how big a difference there is between them.

B1, great point - Pressel is actually the number 1 ranked female amateur in the country, not Wie.
However, Wie has the potential to compete against the men moreso than Pressel.

BB73 - good point. But she needs to learn how to win tournaments. Pressel has been winning tournaments for years. (note which one of them folded on Sunday at the US Women's Open) Wie wins an occassional big tournament, and has proven it would be a waste of time for her to be playing junior golf, but she needs to play the LPGA tour for 2 - 5 years to learn how to manage her game, and learn how to deal with the pressure. If she tries to join the PGA tour too soon, she won't have any positive outcomes to draw on - 2 competitive rounds a week is not enough.

Ding.

If they go to Q School and earn their tour cards... no problemo. For non PGA events... and for the Master's, US or British Open, or US Amatuer, (Or whatever) they should have to meet the qualifications for those events as well.

It my understanding that's what she did to get in this tournament- so what's the big deal.

Its the sponsor's exemptions that I take issue with to some degree... not to say that they shouldn't be able to give an exemption to whoever they want... but it raises the "Who deserves these exemptions?" questions that never seem to get answered... (Unless the answer is simply whoever can generate the most attention... in which case Wie or Sorenstam deserve them)

I'm actually rooting for her to win this amateur event this weekend, since the winner is traditionally invited to play the Masters. I wonder what ole' Hootie will have to say if she wins?

Hootie will not care... Women are allowed to go to Augusta National, Stay the night there and play there.... they just can't be members... Now... Congressional on the other hand. :wink2:
