Just too much to say and I hope you all do not mind me starting this thread!
Earlier this spring my senior Greyhound started to cough,his right tonsil was swollen started him on cephalexin.No good results in a few days,so we tried Cipro,still nothing.
Ended up with suggesting I go to Ohio State,which I am more than willing to take willie out there. They have the greyhound program out there as well.
We take the road trip out,thought he may have the upper respiratory at first,by just glancing in his throat,layman's terms Kennel Cough!
They wanted to do a ultra sound which turned into a needle guided ultra sound,due to blood vessels in that area and bleeding out.
The news was not good,they are thinking thyroid cancer so they do a full T3 panel and they send that to MSU. pending results they will see if left,right side and each para thyroid on each side are involved. They would do the surgery and then radiation if need be.
Still not sure surgery was scheduled and once he is under,they do the CT scan with contrast dye. Well that ended up being bad news after surgery,they called me.
Was not even thyroid cancer,we go back to the right tonsil which the dye lit up and his right lymph node.
He has squama cell carcinoma,very aggressive form of cancer and Metastasis of the right lymph node. No treatment 4 months and treatment up to a year,surgery is not an option.
They told me he is quite a complex case out there.
He is on a drug,invented at Ohio State by Dr.Cheryl London called Palladia and due to him being a retired racing Greyhound chemotherapy drugs are free through the Greyhound program. He takes pain meds as well with that called Tramadol,also a human drug.
Was doing good then had some incredible pain on 6/27 sent blood work to OSU,no visible reason so we upped his meds. Then all was good until 7/10 cried all night,I could not take it anymore,feeling so horrible hearing him cry just hurt me so bad.
Got out of work ran to Ohio State on an hour of sleep,trying not to fall asleep at the wheel. I cranked the air to really cold. Nodded off but caught myself.
O got there about 2:00 p.m.,we were able to go through oncology department did not have to pay $130 emergency fee,his vitals were stable.
They sedated him and did very good x rays of his spine,he has a mild form of ventral spondylosis. terms are arthritis in the spine,mainly neck area,which is common in racing Greyhounds due to their long neck!
The x rays are not as bad as he was in crying from pain,Greyhounds are not as tolerant to pain as some dogs may be. Dr.Kisseberth was pleased to see it was very mild form but can get worse,have to control,running,jumping,etc!
He is also now on Gabapentin for that pain.
He also after 2 weeks started piroxicam on his off days of Palladia,it has anti cancer properties in it as well. Takes Famotidine for belly upset due to these drugs. I have a chart to follow all this stuff!
He had his CBC and Profile with urinalysis done and faxed to OSU! All is good a little low on white blood cell count due to the Palladia,which is normal.
We go back on Tuesday August 6th to see how effective this Palladia is on the tumor.
He is doing pretty good,he seems to have quiet days perhaps he is not having a greyt day but not crying which is good.
Sorry for rambling on but these dogs are my kids as I do not have kids and I would move mountains for these dogs if I could!
I do have a new greyhound,he was my foster dog but liked him so much I failed as a foster mom,proud to say!
I just can't say enough of how happy I am with Ohio State Veterinary Medical Center,they are so good to us! They even kicked in $1500 towards his surgery through the Greyhound program there!
I miss being on here and just have enough wind in my sails to do my real job,grooming dogs,the 2 side jobs free lance photography of rock bands and now horses,and making dog collars. Then I go to sleep and start all over again.
If You all ever need an Ohio State collar let me know! I just invented an awesome Ohio State harness for Willie,he cannot wear a collar due to his neck!
Yes I am ready for some Ohio State Football,more than ready and so is Willie with his new Ohio State harness I made and even bought a new football jersey for Marshall at College traditions while I was there! They had an XXXL for him,he has a deep chest!
